Study shows worst drivers in Omaha ...

Post by Omababe »

I'm surprised nobody posted this, as it was all over the {insert snarky adjectives} local news this morning:

https://quotewizard.com/news/posts/the- ... -city-2018

LOL, it took them that long to figure it out? :) I've been saying this for well over 30 years. It was obvious when I moved out here.

Organizations come up with the result their patrons desire. Not necessarily because the patron has it in for Omaha, but just to stir up...stuff.

The methodology for determining that Omaha has the worst drivers is poor. They say it comes from the number of "accidents, speeding, and driving violations" without consideration for context. Were there more weather phenomenons or confusing construction zones that led to the uptick in accidents? Do Omahans speed more (I'm very confident they don't), or do cops in Omaha enforce speed laws more frequently than other places? Do we really have more driving violations or do we place priority on traffic enforcement?

Also consider that the "best drivers" in this survey are in Orlando, Florida. Really? A city struggling to keep up with population growth and absolutely brimming with both domestic and international tourists with only a rough idea of where they are going has the "best" drivers? I find that hard to believe.

These lists are meaningless, constructed by clickbait websites.

We were the easy target. We get so riled up about anything negative the rest of the nation says about us, so we probably generated A LOT of clicks for them. I think it's nothing more than that. Omaha, getting the job done yet again.

Omaha drivers are truly atrocious. I drive all around this city for a living, every day.

I see multiple horrible driving behaviors every time I go out. Be it excessive speeding, aggressive, angry behavior including tailgating, passing while nearly clipping, trying to always be first, only to be at the same position at a red light, etc...

Omahans don't like to follow stop sign rules. The deliberate, obnoxious and arrogant driving behavior here is running rampant. They think they can do whatever they want.

If any Omahans cannot see that, then they are wearing blinders.

I might put this in another context. Compared to other metro areas, Omaha really does not have any true traffic congestion issues and the roads tend to be in better shape. The drivers don't really have to be that good to exist in Omaha's traffic, and it shows!

I think Omaha is getting pretty dang congested and I’ve been living in Chicago as my last city. I’ve also lived in Sacramento and the Bay Area. I grew up and went to high school here before leaving and I’ve noticed a big change. Now, it’s not Kennedy / Ryan congested, but I have noticed a MASSIVE difference, especially out west. There is congestion on the expressways here, it may not be for hours, but at peak times you are waiting in stop and go traffic more often than not. I notice it on the 680 N and S now, whereas before it would only be at interchanges.

The quality of roads here has also decreased considerably. Pieces of curb and median are falling off everywhere. Radial, Military, 72nd, Maple east of 120, Blondo, there are holes everywhere.

As somebody who travels to other metro areas a lot, I would rank Omaha streets in the bottom of the middle group. I’d rate congestion at peak times on expressways in the middle, on side streets in the top half. Overall drivers.... I have a theory. I don’t think people here are used to traffic. I think it is getting worse as the city grows and people realize construction delays are now worse than they used to be and traffic overall has increased. I see a TON of road rage. TONS... I’ve even had visitors comment on people speeding up to not let you in or aggression and screaming. I don’t think drivers here are quite used to it. I see crazy speeding when there is no traffic, very aggressive driving when there is traffic, and a |expletive| ton of slow Sunday drivers off in la-la land any given day of the week. Again, traffic isnt the worst, but during peak times it’s moderate to bad more than it isn’t anymore, streets are crappy, aggressive drivers are a problem, and I can certainly see why speeding was mentioned.

In a nutshell: Omaha absolutely deserves this ranking, for shitty aggressive drivers alone. Never had this big of a problem any place else. Boston area comes close.

Nope. Absolutely not. West and Southwest Omaha has THE WORST and most aggressive drivers period. SE part of the city is pretty terrible too. But I loath driving in SW Omaha.

This is what bothers me the most. I think it qualifies as bad driving, even though it isn't aggressive. I think you have to feel the other drivers around you and match what the majority is doing, even though it might not be lawful. You have to be aggressive to a certain point, lest getting stuck in the back of line or getting pi$$ed on by other drivers. Calculated aggression is what I call it. Now, if you're just making dumb, unnecessary moves like cutting people off or lane weaving, then yeah. 5 to 10 over is obviously socially acceptable, but I would only do it in a pack of cars also doing the same. Flow of traffic, its easy. Never been in an accident in my life.

My favorite concept the city is trying to teach it's citizens is zipper merging. This wonderful concept of not being a doucher and shutting people in the second lane out because "I did my time" and its "unfair" to jump to the front of the line. Zipper merging is so efficient and I can't wait for the day we figure it out.

Yes! I loved this in Chicago. For as aggressive as the driving can be during peak traffic times, Chicago zipper merges like champs. How to zipper merge is on the Illinois drivers test.

Sadly St. Louis hasn’t quite yet picked up on zipper merging. You still see situations where you have dual turn lanes onto the highway that merge into one lane on the on ramp and all but maybe one car line up in the lane that does not end. Here’s to omahans picking up on it more quickly.

I still zipper merge here. I’m usually the only one. I think to myself “what are all these suckers doing?” Sometimes I get somebody aggressively trying to not let me in. I have battle scars on my car- hit me @ssh0l3- I already got bumper marks... I’m getting in!

Zipper merge is a MUST learn here.

Exactly. It’s being decisive. And when you’re driving a car that is going 75 MPH you need to be able to be decisive. If you don’t feel safe driving at/above the posted speed limit then you are a danger to yourself and those around you nonetheless the danger you pose if someone were to come over a hill while you are going 15 under the speed limit and rear end you because of you’re inability to control your vehicle. Zipper merging shouldn’t be overlooked as Omaha LOVES building out roads to crest the opportunity for it! I also think everyone needs to be retested every 10 years for their drivers license and anyone over 65 needs to be test every or every other year in order to operate a motor vehicle. If your senses and body control aren’t there, you shouldn’t be endangering others on the road.

Funny little story, I learned this concept when I was a boy. There was a lane closure just before Maple on 72nd going south. There was a single file line of cars in the left lane that was nearly 1/4 mile long. On the bus, the driver was training somebody new and he said "look at this, you'll never survive out here if you get in line." So he blew past this huge line of cars and when he got to the front, he pointed the very front left corner of his bus into the left lane, just enough to make it impossible for the car to fit by him "what can they do?" he laughed, and was on his merry way. It blew me away, and now I never hesitate to use the empty lane.

I do this on 72nd going north all the time where it goes down to two lanes at Cass. The third lane is always practically empty, while the other two are usually backed up to Farnam. This process works especially well when Dodge is red. It sounds kinda harsh, but I always say "never worry, there's always someone to take advantage of" (someone who is slow off the mark from texting, soft footed, or plain not paying attention). It works every time.

No city has, on balance, more good drivers than bad (or vise versa).. Omaha has their share of crappy drivers no doubt. Many have never been introduced to the function of their turn signal..and drive either too fast or too slow. Many just seem to think they own the road, and change lanes without looking.. On the other side of that, there are also Omaha drivers that, I believe, purposely drive in the “blind spot”..

All this said, Does that make Omaha the worst? Hardly.. But some city had to be the pie in the face community. It was Omaha’s turn this year I guess..

For what it’s worth.. I’ve had the “honor” of operating a motor vehicle in most of the major metros in the US and many smaller ones.. A few months back, I was visiting family in my 2nd favorite city- Dallas.. And let me tell you, the phrase “bat out of he!!” Could easily have been created to describe the intense speed of drivers all over the Metroplex..and their utter disregard for any speed limit on any road...

Ciao..LiO...Peace

HA! My friends woke up hung over as all be the morning after a Monday night Cowboys game. They were NOT prepared for Dallas rush hour. They said it was terrifying and 100 was the flow of traffic.

The other thing I'd like to say is though are a lot of just bad drivers, how often do you think you might have just witnessed someone making a rare mistake. In a city our size, I'd say it could happen fairly often. I've caught myself start to change lanes without checking fully checking my blind spot once or twice in my life. I'm sure the person chilling in my blind spot thought I was a dimwit, but they did indeed catch me making an extremely rare mistake.

I agree totally with this. I think merging traffic is too passive in Omaha and the traffic on the freeway needs to allow for merging.

I'm so glad Omababe put this in here, because I think it's hilarious that there are so many strong feelings about it. That being said, I call BS on this study, because I've lived in Vegas for 4 years that the drivers here are the WORST and most dangerous I have ever encountered in my life. There are tourists who are either distracted (by looking at all of the tall buildings and casino signs), drunk, or drive excessively aggressive. Every day there is an accident on Interstate 15 -- EVERY DAY. I totally don't agree with this list. I can understand Omaha having bad drivers, because too many drivers are trying to be accommodating and passive. This confuses drivers who are more assertive. It's been my experience that California drivers are in general very good drivers.

After reading some of the comments on Facebook with regard to this ranking I'm realizing that what people consider "bad driving" comes from two different schools of thought, rather than one, and it appears that Omaha may be reaching a point where those schools are becoming more polarized.

Bad Driver Type A: Always in a hurry; always speeding, changing lines to whip around traffic, doesn't signal often, doesn't fully stop at stop signs and tailgates those who they believe are in their way. The speed they travel at is the speed they are comfortable with, not what the law is comfortable with. They "cut people off" and appear to be careless. More than a second of waiting at a light after it turns green is a second too long, the lead driver needs to be paying attention and get going. They view traffic and driving as a system and they aim to contribute to a level of efficiency by keeping things moving over keeping to the letter of the law, though some maneuvers come from a place of selfishness.

Bad Driver Type B: All rules are to be followed to a T. All traffic laws have surely been optimized for safety over all else and these drivers must do their part to ensure they work as designed, putting considerable faith into traffic engineers and politicians who help establish these laws. The left lane is (generally) for passing so long as the passer is doing the speed limit. If it takes 10 minutes to pass a semi because the semi is going 74.5 MPH and the passer is going 75, all those waiting for the passer to complete their task are going to wait because their desire to speed is in the wrong, not the passer's impeding the flow of traffic. However, they go against the traffic engineers wishes when it comes to lane reductions. When an upcoming lane ends, courtesy trumps efficiency and they must form a line well before the merge point out of a politeness.

Type A does not care for Type B and vice versa. Type A does not play well with Type B and vice versa. The polarization seems to be resulting from reaching some level of population growth where traffic is leading to more Type A drivers after years with a majority of Type B.

That said, I still contend that Omaha is a breeze compared to many places.

I feel like it’s hard to compare one city’s drivers to another. Especially when the traffic levels are vastly different.

An out-of-state relative and I came up with the term "Omaha Yellow" while driving around. It's almost expected that drivers will try to speed through the yellow and red phases here. There's been a lot of times where I thought I was cutting it close during a yellow light, only to see 2-3 more cars behind me run the yellow/red light.

It scares me more to not speed through a Yellow light, to be honest. It seems safer to continue through the light when the cars perpendicular to you are already stopped and will just wait until there's not a car in the intersection as compared to slamming on the brakes and having someone behind you barreling into the back of you because they can't stop quick enough.

Ah yeah, another of my favorite things to do. When I see a light is about to turn yellow, I do everything I can to make it. If I see the countdown and I know I'll make it if I speed up maybe 5 more mph, I'm gonna do it. Really grinds my gears when the count gets low and people slow down in front of me. Btw those crosswalk timers are the game changer. I always used to be scared to drive up to an intersection I saw had been green for a long time. They really help you make an informed decision whether to give up on it or seize the opportunity.

I couldn't agree more! In fact, I know of at least two places (Kennedy south of 370 and the 84th St viaduct in Ralston) where road crews have put up a bunch of signs instructing people to wait and zipper merge right before the lane closure. And do you think ANYBODY ever follows those signs and actually does it properly? Of course not. Nearly everyone still gets over waaaaay too soon and ends up forming a ridiculously long line.

Re: Study shows worst drivers in Omaha ...

The study continues to be a bunch of |expletive|. The fact that they ranked St. Louis drivers as 2nd best leads me to believe they do this for clicks. St. Louis drivers are the most oblivious, non-signaling, non-traffic norm understanding drivers I’ve experienced in the Midwest. It makes me miss Chicago drivers.

We might have some of the fastest (wreckless?) drivers around. I frequently find when I visit other cities that it feels like I am flying past everyone on their interstates and highways. I don't think I'm driving especially fast (perhaps 7 or 8 MPH over the posted speed limit). That's totally subjective, of course, but it certainly always seems that way.

I get incredibly annoyed driving in other cities. “WHY IS EVERYONE SO D@M SLOW???” Is all that goes through my head (thinking of you especially, Lincoln)

Lol especially if you're trying to go north or south. 27th street is a nightmare of a thoroughfare.

Yeah, I agree 27th St in Lincoln is painfully slow. It’s kind of like 72nd in Omaha, except in Omaha everyone pretty much goes at least the speed limit. If pushing the limit or slightly exceeding it makes me a “worst” driver then so be it. For the most part in Omaha I think the lights are timed pretty well to match the speed limit, but there are always those who go twice the limit so they can be the first one to the next red light. My pet peeve is when I have to wait for an overly polite person who clearly has the right-of-way at a 4-way stop sign, and they waive me to go ahead anyway. On the interstate, I hate left lane hogs who never get over to the right after they pass because they think nobody else will ever need to pass them, or they want to set the pace for everyone else with their cruise-control. Overly polite people who don’t know how to zipper-merge are next on the list.

^people chilling in the left lane makes me mad too. I guess I caught myself doing that tonight. I was "only" doing 75 on the expressway and someone got on at 144th and I observed them looking at their phone throughout my time around them, so I wanted a buffer lane, and all the sudden a couple people passed me on the right probably doing 85 - 90. So I guess if you aren't doing 90+, you can't chill in the left lane. Kinda shocking, but I guess.
