Not so Official: Giordano's coming to Omaha!

Hot take alert: when I was at La Casa West a few weeks a go the guy in front of me in line was talking about Giardano's moving into the old Hancock Fabrics location in Westgate plaza as if it was a done deal. Reliable source? Probably not. Does this location make sense given their other locations? No.

But - I wanted to report it for posterity. I would guess West Farm if I were a betting man.

“Hi Lou- We’ve been researching the market in Omaha and as you can imagine, there are several factors that go into opening a new restaurant in a brand new market. We take opening a new restaurant very seriously and we will keep you updated as our progress continues!”..

LOL. Well, I never really thought about that..

I’m very curious where they end up with their site selection. I was hoping for an announcement at least by now.. But I’m thinking we’ll probably be waiting until October or November..

In the end, I still think Giordano’s was taken aback by Omaha winning that poll in such an overwhelming way.. And I believe they thought a mega city like Dallas or Houston would easily win.. The Big O threw them curveball. They made a public commitment and now they have to see it through.. If Dallas or Houston had won that poll, I’m fairly certain Giordano’s Would be open, or near completion, of their new restaurant by now...

Your giving it way too much thought. If Omaha wasn't a possibility on their radar they would have never been a spot on the poll. Now they may not have expected a win but it was not out of their thought process.

Perhaps you’re right.. But I still don’t think they thought Omaha would win that poll. But in the end, obviously, I’m glad it did. Hopefully we’ll get a site announcement before Thanksgiving...

My guess is that if (not when) they open an Omaha location, it will be mobbed for the first few weeks, relatively busy for a couple of months, and after than mainly competing with whatever else is in the area.

Locals will, of course, see it as something new and different and try it. Visitors will mainly see it as another choice of yet another chain that happens to be in the area.

I pretty much agree with what you’re saying here Omababe..

One thing I will add, is that Giordano’s is not a really a chain. I don’t know that people really see it as that. They are pretty exclusive where they open locations outside of the Chicagoland area. I’m confident it will be a massive hit when they open in Omaha (and it’s a certainty they will, unless something catastrophic happens).. Their quality should carry them after the initial “gleam” wears off..

Location is very important as well. I’m hopeful we’ll get an announcement on that sometime before the Thanksgiving holiday (as I stated previously)...

Uh, we may need to agree to disagree on that! They are very good, and so far have not degenerated into mediocrity like many (most?) chains, but they are still a chain. You can't go anywhere in the Chicago area without running into one. I know they are at least in Minneapolis, Florida, and Las Vegas. In most cases you could fall asleep in one and wake up in another and not notice the difference except for sunshine instead of snow outside! The menus are identical (the pricing is not). That makes it a chain!

In Las Vegas when they first opened they were mobbed! Now after a couple of years the novelty has worn off and you can usually walk in without a wait. I suspect it will be the same here if they do eventually open.

As an update, I heard from a cohort out there that one of the Las Vegas locations (a semi open-air one located a few hundred feet from the main indoor one) is not doing very well.

My definition of what would qualify as a chain is probably different. Giordano’s having 14 locations outside of the Chicagoland area.. and only in 7 states outside of Illinois..makes them an expanding restaurant brand.. But i’d fall far short of labeling them a chain..

For example, I now consider the Cheesecake Factory a chain.. But 25 years ago I did not consider them so..as there was much more exclusivity in relation to locations primarily outside of California.. Ruth’s Chris was much more exclusive 25 years ago.. But they’re definitely a chain now. They just opened a location in Fort Wayne, Indiana for goodness sakes..no offense to the fine city of Ft Wayne

Once we see Giordano’s expand their national footprint into most of the top 50-75 markets, then I’d consider them a chain. Today? No..

I haven’t had Giordano’s in nearly 5 years. I’m likely not traveling to Chicago in the foreseeable future. So the Omaha location can’t open fast enough...

Their expansion reminds me of when Pizzeria UNO started expanding years ago. I don't think they are moving the way that chain did, but you have to be careful. There was a novelty to it and for a while that chain did well. Locations in places like KC, Phoenix, and St. Louis always seemed to be pretty full. Then, it fell apart and they closed a ton of locations.

It's pizza. Nothing more than dough, sauce, meat, etc. Not exactly reinventing the wheel.

If they open in Omaha good. If not I'm sure there are plenty of pizza places in Omaha.

On a similar note regarding chain restaurants versus locals, I notice that the Detroit metro has most of the national chains...Mortons, Shake Shack, and on and on, but it also a world of locally owned ones that do very well. That's what you get with about 5 million people living here.

I'll support locally owned places wherever I am. It isn't that I'll never eat at a national chain but given a choice we go local. I will maintain that Omaha's restaurant scene was killed by the CB casinos and their buffets. Yep, a mountain of mediocre food for a 5 spot and $200 in losses at the slots. Sounds like a great deal.

Yeahbut...

We argue, scream, wish, and whine for our favorite pizza because each tastes different to us. Sure, basically the same ingredients, but an added spice here, a different topping there, sometimes different blends of cheeses or sauces. For me, it's all about the crust. (One popular Omaha pizza tastes like bleah to me because I do not like their crust.)

To my taste buds, Giordano's is a combination unlike most others, particularly because of the taste of the crust. Certain Omaha restaurants have advertised "Chicago stuffed" and I've tried it...but those do not taste to me like Giordano's. Somebody said maybe it's Chicago's water. Maybe it is.

I absolutely agree with this..

As a person who’s on record here, many times over, expressing my love for the Omaha pizza I grew up with (mainly La Casa)..Giordano’s is a unique, authentic Chicago style pizza; which will be a welcome addition to the already high quality Omaha pizza scene...

I feel like that’s a product of a poor quality local restaurant scene than the desirability of the buffet. It sounds to me like local restauranteurs needed to up their game with food quality and atmosphere.

Quaker State is always jumping. Hooters ain't my speed, but it's interesting that Westwood Plaza couldn't keep theirs but CB did.

Giordano’s Pizzeria will occupy a new freestanding building in the newly-built Bridgewood Square retail center in West Des Moines at 120 Jordan Creek Parkway
In October 2017, Giordano's announced on its Facebook page that Des Moines was a finalist in the running for a restaurant. A voting competition pitted Des Moines against Omaha, Dallas, Cincinnati and Houston. Omaha garnered the most votes.

Though a timeline has not been confirmed, Hodges said he estimates the chain may come in summer 2019.

To be fair, I tried to ha. But really for a company to put out a vote, say we won and say we will be getting one, then open one in a city that didnt win the vote that has a smaller population? It just doesn’t seem like a company that I would trust.

My observation is that this appears to be how "Fake News" happens. Giordano's asked people to vote. That was clearly a marketing gimmick -- indeed, most here believed that. Then we "won" but weren't immediately granted a Giordano's location. Hmmm, that's not how business is transacted. At best, there may have already been some discussion about an Omaha location. But hey, we seem to have a lot of Very Connected People here who know things as soon as, or even before, they happen, and I don't recall any of these VCPs saying anything specific.

Now Giordano's has announced a location in one of the cities that the marketing gimmick, er, the vote was taken, and it's not the "winning" city, thus generating angst and yet MORE marketing for them. As has been noted here before, Omaha already has a ton of fine, fine pizza choices. Giordano's would add to that, but we're doing great (though slightly deprived) without them. So relax -- I suspect we'll get a location WHEN they feel the time is right, WHEN they make the business decision on a location. Perhaps, it will indeed be "You get a Giordano's! And YOU get a Giordano's!"

I agree.. And as I’ve stated before in this thread, Giordano’s reps have told me, specifically, they are opening in Omaha..It’s a matter of site selection (according to them).. This communication was some 5 or so months ago.. Of course, what they’ve told yours truly means absolutely nothing.. Other than they indicated they will be opening in Omaha..

But this entire gimmicky process looks shadier by the week.. Especially when they announce new locations opening soon in other cities..which don’t happen to be Omaha...

Frankly, I wouldn't be too hyper over a potential Giordano's. Now, if Omaha could snag a Lou Malnati's . . . . . . !!
