I didn't measure, but we got something similar. However it was the wettest/heaviest snow of the year. For the first time ever, my snowblower couldn't handle it.

I remember hearing the number "5" on TV and "7" on the radio in the run-up to the storm.nebugeater wrote: Sat Jan 12, 2019 4:26 pm Where did you see forecasts for this area that were any more than 1 - 4 inches.

It was a very wet and heavy snow, I'm surprised I didn't hear about more power lines being down, I was going to look online but forgot. I heard a lot of snow blowers quit in my hood. Driveway was a sheet of ice this morning. I skated to get the paper this morning, almost face planted.Brad wrote: Sun Jan 13, 2019 4:31 am However it was the wettest/heaviest snow of the year. Re: 2018/2019 Winter Weather Thread
My eyeball view, in my area of West Omaha, it looked to be 2 to 3 inches tops. A bit more than 2 but not more than 3.. So I’ll call it 2 and a half.. I was out and about all afternoon into the evening yesterday from my area of 132 and West Center to 156th and Dodge all the way over to Bennington off of 156th and State and the amount of snow appeared pretty consistent at no more than 3 inches..
But again, that’s what it appeared like to me in the areas where I drove yesterday...

Re: 2018/2019 Winter Weather Thread
Don't you think you're being a tad unrealistic though? Just because you didn't see those totals at your specific location (though I'm not sure you actually measured) doesn't mean others in the area even just a few miles away didn't (lots of places in southern Omaha/Bellevue saw 5"+ of snow) - not to mention forecasting isn't and won't be an exact science for many years (the atmosphere is EXTREMELY complex and there are lots of things we don't know or understand fully). Honestly It's this type of stuff that is uncalled for and IMO completely disrespectful. You come on here basically complaining about how the forecast was yet again "wrong" in your eyes saying "they were forecasting a repeat of the blizzard of 1888" (which they obviously didn't) and as it turns out they were pretty spot on with forecasts for Omaha in what was a very difficult forecast (like many winter storms are - in this case the sharp cutoff was actually IN Omaha itself making it even more difficult than normal). I won't say anything more in regards to this topic as I doubt it will do much to help and obviously you're entitled to your opinion. I will say this though, if you feel so strongly that all weather people forecast so poorly, perhaps you should learn how to forecast yourself? Then maybe you'd learn to appreciate how difficult it is and how much time, effort and skill it actually takes.Omababe wrote: Sun Jan 13, 2019 2:17 pmI remember hearing the number "5" on TV and "7" on the radio in the run-up to the storm.nebugeater wrote: Sat Jan 12, 2019 4:26 pm Where did you see forecasts for this area that were any more than 1 - 4 inches.

Anyhow, enough of all that - back to talking weather.
Looking like what could be a pretty big storm for the region Friday/Saturday including some areas that may see in excess of 6" of snow with wind. Still too far out to know the exact track but there is a decent chance Omaha will be impacted by it. After the storm, temps will be cold with lows below zero and windchills probably in the -20 to -30 range on Saturday...

NWS currently posting numbers higher than what they has for the previous storm. We ended up with about an inch more than they predicted for the last one. If that is any indicator, I'll end up with about 2.5" to 5". Turning into a nice January.stormchaser wrote: Tue Jan 15, 2019 9:18 pm Anyhow, enough of all that - back to talking weather.

The situation right now is very interesting as the school districts are pre-emptively cancelling as the weather models simultaneously start showing this may be a non-event.

Exactly.. It may be an overreaction. I just watched the latest forecast on KETV 7 and they are calling for a 2-4 inch snow accumulation for the Omaha metro.. I hope it keeps trending down to 1-3 by tomorrow morning...Mr.Nuke wrote: Fri Jan 18, 2019 2:16 am The situation right now is very interesting as the school districts are pre-emptively cancelling as the weather models simultaneously start showing this may be a non-event.

Based on the early model data I wouldn't be surprised if you see stations going with 1-3" by tonight.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Fri Jan 18, 2019 2:21 amExactly.. It may be an overreaction. These shut downs are becoming contagious. Offutt AFB is closed tomorrow too. Essential personnel only.

Yeah, Pretty good chance there will be a lot of annoyed/upset people for cancelling school here in Omaha today. Most forecast models have reduced snow totals down to only 1-2 inches in Omaha itself..."maybe" 3 inches of snow in Council Bluffs but either way snow totals are now looking very minor in the local area.
Regardless, expect a challenging evening rush hour due to the timing of the snow...

With the wet streets and rapidly falling temps this afternoon, it may have been smart to keep after school traffic off the neighborhood roads and sidewalks.

Southwest Airlines jet slid off the runway just a bit over half an hour a go and it looks like they are just sitting there. If I was on that plane I would be needing to get off it in a major way just to keep my sanity. Reminds me of when I was flying out of Omaha to Las Vegas at 8AM on the morning of the famous ice storm back in October of 1997.

I'm so sick of the local weather stations blowing stuff out of proportion and not even being able to forecast anything in the last week correctly.
If you are only remotely correct 15% of the time, most jobs would can you within a week.

I actually think that the NWS does a very good job of forecasting the weather, in comparison with decades past. In winter the “cut off” line from heavy snow to no snow can be 10-20 miles. In the most recent snow Eppley received over 5 inches, as did Bellevue. My area of westish Omaha got less than 2 inches, and further northwest almost nothing fell.

It sounds like it is gonna be so frigid back there. If school is being called off just because of temps, that is severe. Stay warm and dress safe. It reminds me almost of that "Absolute Zero" movie with the dumb & silly caption "Miami's never been so cold." Its so dumb because that same caption would truthfully work for Omaha, International Falls, the North Pole -- or Pluto, for that matter.

Besides safety considerations, unless they idled the busses periodically throughout the night, it may be difficult getting the diesel fueled ones started in the morning.

Any diesel bus in this part of the country will be parked and plugged in with an engine block heater. OPS uses 100% CNG buses I believe. IT is cold and people need to pay attention but the media is treating this like it is the first time it has been this cold. You guys are like that Disney's title "FROZEN" back there.... Brrrr.... Even when you're inside, and have the heat on, things still feel different inside, when the air is that cold outside. I wonder if pressures change when the temps drop that low, or something? How cold is it?
