Baxter will be building a Showroom at 17845 Burt and a Service Shop at 17875 Burt, I believe a Kia project.

Re: West Dodge Pointe - Baxter (NW 168th & Dodge)
Just had my car serviced at the new Baxter VW on 172nd and Burt, which opened 3 weeks ago. Very nice facilities and a huge improvement over the old Westroads location. Was there for a couple hours as I was having several things done and the time just flew by because the waiting area was so comfortable.

I'm surprised the city isn't fixing the entrance to this area from 168th. Heading north - you're screwed.

That median used to be open but they closed it because of accidents. I doubt they'll reopen it. But you're right, that area has poor access.obvious2677 wrote: Mon Feb 25, 2019 9:12 pm I'm surprised the city isn't fixing the entrance to this area from 168th. Heading north - you're screwed.

I think they missed the original opportunity - which would have been more complex and costly, but would have been better overall.HR Paperstacks wrote: Mon Feb 25, 2019 9:59 pmThat median used to be open but they closed it because of accidents. It was looked at as well as a loop on the east side of 168th and looped around and under 168th street. Both options were really expensive. I think the bridge to the north was so expensive because the height to get over the railroad as well as the length because of the creek that parallels the railroad.obvious2677 wrote: Tue Feb 26, 2019 11:14 am

Re: West Dodge Pointe - Baxter (NW 168th & Dodge)
Wow, for a new development that's surprisingly bad access from West Dodge Road and northbound 168th. From westbound West Dodge Rd. you'd have to go to 180th and and double back east on Burt St. to get to Baxter. Or approach southbound from 168th & Blondo or Maple (Hwy 64). But good access all comes down to cost.
If you live in the eastern part of Omaha, I guess another couple of miles doesn't matter much since you're already going way out of your way to get out there, compared to the Westroads location. I'm looking forward to seeing Baxter's new digs though.

I know, just saying they missed the opportunity. They're running into the same high costs for 180th and 192nd. I suppose it's a good thing that everything on the north side is car dealerships (where making a specific, out-of-the-way trip is expected).Brad wrote: Tue Feb 26, 2019 11:45 amIt was looked at as well as a loop on the east side of 168th and looped around and under 168th street. With the 168th expansion, doing this means you're likely to be demolished by someone going 65 (from one direction or the other).

Yes, it is bad access.. but then again, it’s not the only “point of destination” development in the Omaha area that has bad access (and I know you know this)..GetUrban wrote: Tue Feb 26, 2019 1:34 pm Wow, for a new development that's surprisingly bad access from West Dodge Road and northbound 168th. So in the end (and for the time being), if people really want to get to Baxter at their new location, they’ll tolerate the extra hoop they have to hurdle to get there...

Yeah, there are many areas with worse access. I always get messed up in some parts of Millard, for example, since I don't go there often. I think it had to do with the original Millard grid lining up with the railroad line. And creeks and limited-access highways always make access more difficult too.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Tue Feb 26, 2019 8:38 pmYes, it is bad access.. but then again, it’s not the only “point of destination” development in the Omaha area that has bad access (and I know you know this)..GetUrban wrote: Tue Feb 26, 2019 1:34 pm Wow, for a new development that's surprisingly bad access from West Dodge Road and northbound 168th. This gets me to thinking..that one of us should start a thread for bad access “points of destination” in the Omaha area.. We’d certainly have enough entries to accommodate a healthy number of posts, lol...GetUrban wrote: Thu Feb 28, 2019 12:49 pmYeah, there are many areas with worse access. Not that it wasn't bad before, but now the choices to take a driving test across the whole city are 144th and U or 170th and Dodge. This is absolutely ludicrous.

I feel its a great idea! Test to see if they can merge onto a road with a 70 MPH speed limit, if not they shouldn't be driving.

I think I remember reading somewhere (felt like on this forum but I can't find it now) that something like 30% of all car sales in Omaha will be within 4 miles of 180th and Dodge when all of the dealerships on this strip are completed, plus the ones in West Farm Heartwood Preserve. So it makes sense that the DMV is building here.
But I agree that it's pretty bad that the driving test can't be taken east of 144th.

Maybe new car sales
and maybe where the sale is made but not where the car will call home

I think the DMV has enough paperwork/inspection/etc to do on cars new to the state which that they do not have to do on used cars that it makes sense to put an office in physical proximity to a major source of new cars entering the state. I could be totally wrong on that as I am not invovled in any way in car sales.

Isn't it something you only have to do like once in your life? That's a pretty big chunk of Omaha. Within 4 miles of 180th and Dodge means a radius of 4 miles which is like 50 square miles. Perhaps they mean within a 4 miles stretch of Dodge Street centered on 180th & Dodge?Original wrote: Thu Feb 06, 2020 8:22 am I think I remember reading somewhere (felt like on this forum but I can't find it now) that something like 30% of all car sales in Omaha will be within 4 miles of 180th and Dodge when all of the dealerships on this strip are completed, plus the ones in West Farm Heartwood Preserve. If you are doing a renewal, Car plates of DL, and nothing has changed do it online. I have done this for every plate and DL I can since it was an option. I just did my DL again in January for a Feb expiration.

I should have just looked it up earlier, it was easy. They do renewal at the Ames location, but no test. 108th used to be the location I went to, but now looks like it will be Ames in the future.

Yes - except how do you get there if you can't drive there? And when you consider that driver's license is the way that everyone expects to get government issued ID, and now if you are a lower income person or someone without a social net, getting that license can become prohibitively hard. I am pretty sure there are other ways to get government issued id, but... do you know what they are?ChadJK wrote: Fri Feb 07, 2020 10:22 amIsn't it something you only have to do like once in your life? Re: West Dodge Pointe - Baxter (NW 168th & Dodge)
Of course. So, you have to get someone else to take you. Now if it is near your residence, perhaps you can get them to take you then take the bus back to the residence while you wait some unspecified period of time to take the test. Or ask them to wait with you. If you're 17 and your stay-at-home mom is taking you from your house in Millard to get your license so you can drive the spare or old car they bought you, maybe not a big deal. For people in other scenarios, it's a lot more struggle. If you're 17 and live with a single mom in north Omaha, where your family only has one car that your mom has to take to one of the two jobs she works so you and your younger siblings can survive....ScrattyB wrote: Mon Feb 10, 2020 10:10 amI'm pretty sure you need a car to take a driving test.Original wrote: Mon Feb 10, 2020 8:22 amYes - except how do you get there if you can't drive there?ChadJK wrote: Fri Feb 07, 2020 10:22 amIsn't it something you only have to do like once in your life? And sure, this is *just* one time you have to do it. But how many of those 'one-time' things are there?
All I'm saying is that it seems to be a bad thing that the driving test can only be taken at the two western-most locations of the DMV in Douglas County, and if they are closing the easternmost location, maybe they should take a fresh look at why they stopped doing driving tests at 56th, and reconsider?

I'm not sure if it's still the case, but 20 years ago, dealership employees would have to physically go to the DMV to file paperwork and such for every car sold. If that's still true, it will be very convenient having a DMV office right down the street from those dealerships.

The dmv going in on 168th and dodge will be for driver’s license issuing only. For treasurer vehicle registration and renewal the location is in the government building just east of 156th and Maple (they added a drive through)
