Today driving on 680, I noticed a crew out painting the old Walmart building at 680 and Fort St exit. Some sort of tan/sand with a dark brown band in the middle. The realtor sign was still up but I'm thinking they're not painting in for entertainment value. Anyone know whats going in there?

After thinking about it a bit, I think the new color scheme is the same as the supercenter in Council Bluffs. Kinda wierd, I don't see Walmart paying to paint an old store. Loyal, are you for real on that or joking? I was hoping for something about the Google paythingy offices talked about here.

This former Wal-Mart (b. 1990) is being developed into the Omaha Power Center:

About time.

I hope they develop the "Sea of Parking" in front of the building.

I noticed this morning a sign on the old Walmert facing the interstate saying: Ambassador Worship Center. Right now the have a worship center and administration building on 24th & St. Mary's and are building a new complex on the NE Corner of Sorenson Pkwy & Wenninghoff Road. So this may just be a temporary residency.

I thought a church was going to be building there this year as a lot of dirt work took place last fall BUT the land went back up for sale this summer.

Are you sure it is back up for sale. An Omaha Public Works report (14640-dated 11/24/06) Still lists the applicant as the Ambassador Worship Center.

I live within walking distance and drive by twice a day. Dirt was moved last fall and the only thing done this year was mowing weeds. A For Sale sign went up this summer on the NE corner this summer --- maybe they took it down again --- i will look on the way.

I will have to look into that also this evening. They may have changed their plans and will now occupy and remodel the old Wal-Mart for their use. It sure would give "Church Shopping" a new meaning. :P

There is still a LUND company For Sale sign on the NE corner of Sorensen Parkway and Wenninghoff.

There are two parcels of land on this corner. Both are owned by Harvest Tabernacle DBA Ambassadors Worship Center.
One is a 4.97 acre property which matches the discription of the 5 acre parcel that they were to build on. The second is a 20.8 acre parcel. Both valued around $130,000. Maybe they bought the 25 acres and were going to build on 5 and sell the rest when the land price escalated. Lund has a 25.8 acre parcel now listed here selling at $1,500,000. I think they are taking their profit from this land and are going to do something else.

Congregation aims to convert former Wal-Mart into church
Omaha World Herald wrote:A downtown Omaha church is working with an architect to turn the former Wal-Mart property near 103rd and Fort Streets into its new worship center. The Ambassadors Worship Center bought the Wal-Mart at 5417 N. 103rd St. last July for $3.7 million. The Wal-Mart had closed in January 2004 after a new Supercenter opened less than a mile away. It now operates out of a stately building at 24th Street and St. Mary's Avenue. Church representatives Tuesday told the Douglas County Board that the congregation plans to move to the Wal-Mart property and is finalizing blueprints for its redevelopment.

Psh. I don't remember any media coverage when my church converted the former K-Mart at 108th and Maple into a church. Oh well. We're pretty happy with our new building. Church in a big place like that can work, but it's different.

A church?

I went shopping there so many times growing up. I remember them building that. I think I was in 7th grade then. That was the period when Omaha was suddenly getting 3-4 Wal-marts at once, and everyone was talking about how Wal-Mart was finally coming to the big city. And, now they are everywhere. In fact, I'm looking across the street at one right now.
I can get pushed out because I'm "too much" for some. Then, an observer of me comes suddenly swooping in to "fill my shoes." People are always more accepting of the new one, because their feathers aren't truly ruffled by them. (Yawn) I can count on it every time.

So, what happened to the budweiser coat?

Actually, don't answer that. I don't want to be blamed for not sticking to the subject. ;-)

Anyways, I'm glad to see that old shell of a Wal-Mart being put to use.

I am wondering if they are going to maintain its warehouse look, or if they are planning to renovate its facade, and if they will resurface their parking lot adding some landscape. That would certainly brighten up the Fort St Corridor.

Anybody know what's going on there?

There appears to be some serious action there, and I'm curious since I drive by there each day.

Thanks.

I have been meaning to post that there is now a sign on the building that advertises for Kaplan College. It looks like they will occupy the western most of the three bays.
