I'm not really a soccer guy, but being Catholic and my mom was born and raised in Liverpool, I did play growing up. Will definitely catch a few games.

My family does go to some Sporting KC games in KC. They play out in the suburbs on the Kansas side. You definitely have a good mix of soccer fanatics along with plenty of families.

I do agree Martie will do his thing and definitely make it an event (Sporting games definitely have an event feel as well).

My wife and I intend to attend some games next year. Our kids just started playing soccer, and even though I enjoy watching baseball, the rest of the family are more appreciative of the more kinetic sport of soccer. So, we will be there.

But Sporting KC is the highest level, and the area surrounding the park is awesome. The draw is higher for a wider variety of folks. Totally a different beast than what this team will be facing.

Definitely highest level but not sure how not being highest level with deter families? The Chasers aren't highest level yet are attractive to families. The area around the park doesn't impact us (except parking can be interesting, you are not allowed to park in the retail lots. We just go to the games and leave which seems to be the norm there for families.

Knowing that a team plays at the highest level is definitely a draw in of itself for many, families and not. It The area around the park may not impact YOU, but the area itself has a draw to it that also impacts the visibility and overall appeal of the event.

You go there because Cordero knows how to do it right, and knows what it takes to bring you in (also being a KC fan may or may not play a part). But, what it "takes" to bring in fans to SPKC is different.

There is also a drawback for families that know a team is playing at the highest level, and that is cost. That's an advantage of something like this vs SPKC, and the Chasers vs the Royals. It is great seeing top level, but that being said, as one of the adults that has to spring for tickets, I can tell you there is an advantage so going to minor league events as well.

The MLS and lower division soccer teams who are currently building successful brands play in urban areas and target both young people and the latino community rather than suburban families. I do not see this organization doing well at drawing either group with their location. I do not see them creating the "have a beer at the pub then walk to the stadium" type of die hard fan base, especially since there are no bars or restaurants within walking distance then everyone will have to drive home. However, given the dearth of sports going on in Omaha during summers after the CWS I believe they will be moderately successful, albeit not as successful as if they had played at Morrison.

As I said earlier, I think this is a nice sports option “get” for Omaha.. Of course it’s not the top tier league, but from what I’ve read, the level of play is not chopped chicken liver either..

I’m a bit surprised by the lukewarm reception to this news on the forum. But lately, it’s something I’ve come to expect...

Had this been USL Championship, or if they had somehow talked Creighton into letting them use Morrison, I'd be more jazzed. As it stands, I will go and think it will be neat, but a baseball stadium wasn't built for this sport. Nor do I think the atmosphere from the crowd type/demographic it is going to draw will be all that fun.

But, who knows, it could be awesome. Wait and see mode for me.

Fair points all around..

The good news is, Omaha is finally getting into in a soccer league that plays at a legitimate higher level.. If this turns out to be great after a season or 3 who knows..

Perhaps the door will open for a Championship USL level team down the line...

But you said that you see that Sporting KC draws "Plenty of families", so the costs must not be a huge deterrent?

The point is, the circumstances that draw someone to SPKC vs what will be drawn here is quite different, for various reasons. There are challenges at play here that SPKC does not have, and vice versa so to compare the two is kind of strange. I would say that the draw to SPKC is quite a bit higher, which is why they can easily fill out a 25,000 seat stadium (even when factoring in population) versus here that will likely draw maybe 2,000 if lucky. Again, and we both agree on this (I think), Cordero knows this and will hopefully play up and create the festival atmosphere that they will need to draw in order to survive.

The soccer discussion should probably be in the Sports forum not the Development forum. Just sayin' :)

Yes both will draw families. I referenced Sporting (and the Royals) because you mentioned the "highest level." Sporting is also in a market that has an extra million. Sporting and the Royals also do to being major league draw from several hundred miles around them.

The Chasers and the new Omaha soccer team don't charge as much and don't need to draw anywhere near as many fans (they will also have a smaller area to draw from, it did seem to generate a nice buzz in Lincoln, and Werner is about a good of a location for those coming from Lincoln as you can have).

Yeah one thing that makes me optimistic is what you and I both agree on. Martie Cordaro. He knows this market and how to create a event feel. With 14 or so games spread over 7 months or so, I think he will generate that and more.

I'm excited about this. More sports and entertainment options are never a bad thing for a city. The amount of hate and venom being thrown at this on social media is mindblowing to me. Makes the people of Omaha look like hayseeds, honestly. It's embarrassing.

I threw down a deposit for a ticket. It sounds fun to me. If it succeeds down the line a USL Championship team is a real possibility.

Also, I wouldn't compare this to KC. I'd compare it to St. Louis. Granted, they are in USL Championship. Their stadium is more suburban, but they draw almost 5k a game. They've put in their time and will likely be moving to MLS as the city has started to embrace the team and has shown there is interest. They will be getting a stadium downtown. This is how it works. It's a long term plan, not overnight.

Omaha strikes me as a city that has a champagne taste on a beer budget. We want the highest levels or we aren't interested. Minor League isn't good enough to keep our interest. But, we want $10 tickets and free parking with dollar beer nights.

Omaha is one of the most frustrating sports markets I can think of for these reasons.

I'm flabbergasted by it, as well. The number of social media comments along the lines of "I *was* excited for a USL team in Omaha until I found out it wasn't actually *in* Omaha" are too numerous to count. They act like Papillion is three hours away and in another state.

It's exciting news. And I bet the games will be a lot more fun without those negative nellies in the crowd anyway :D

I hadn’t seen those, but I guess I’m not surprised. You want to ask these people, how many pro teams does the city of Omaha have. Winning answer, zero. They all play in the suburbs.

I was thinking about taking in a game or two anyway, but things like this make it even more likely I’ll go.

If anyone is interested, you can put down a $30 deposit for seats on omahaprosoccer.com. You get some perks for being a "founding member" and if you get buyers remorse and decide that the full season ticket isn't for you, the FAQ section says that the $30 is convertible to other ticket package options other than full season.

Werner Park has 6500 reserved seats while Morrison has 2000. I love Morrison but it's not a real option for a successful professional team at any level. Plus, trying to sell Morrison as some urban paradise is silly - it's basically in an urban desert where it's a long walk to anything but Creighton buildings.

And we all know the guy already owns the main tenant of the same stadium, why wouldn't he have it there?

I agree. It will be better at Werner based on the size and amenities.

In fact, if we are just talking about facility, I"d say Caniglia would be better than Morrison. Bigger capacity and better playing surface. Everyone seems fixated on Morrison because it's downtown, but I really prefer Caniglia to Morrison for these reasons. I'm biased though.

Just heard on 590 that Omaha set a one day ticket sales record yesterday for the USL.

For season tickets? Or individual games?

Good showing at the start, hope it carriers into season 2 once the typical "it's new" crowd fades.

As for the preference for Morrison, mine comes from a it's a stadium built for soccer, not baseball. Personal preference for sight lines. Canigilia would have been good too, keep forgetting that field.

Season tickets. Sounds like they've been talking a lot behind the scenes with the local soccer community, also mentioned talking with American Outlaws.

They also mentioned some new development announcements coming for Pennant Place. With the new Omaha soccer and the Storm Chasers sounds like Werner Park will have an event every Saturday night during the season starting next year.

It was Gary Green and Jason Mims on air with Mike'l.

Engaging with the actual soccer community, let alone with the Outlaws, shows that once again Cordero is the man for the job. I really, really hope people are going to stick with this. Still have my doubts for the reasons I've already stated, but they're going to give this the best possible shot. It's a damn shame this group didn't get ahold of AHL in Omaha...

Also, too bad there's nothing in the plans for youth soccer fields near Pennant Place (that I know of?). Might be a good fit.

Did they say how many "sold"? I'm very curious as I know people I work with are saying this won't draw anyone and will be lucky to make it a year. I would love to see them proven wrong.

Still, we need to keep in mind, saying that these are season ticket sales are pretty much a misnomer. They are currently only taking $30 deposits for season tickets. They haven't really sold any actual tickets as of yet. I put down a $30 deposit. Still, that doesn't mean a full season ticket is in the bag. In fact, the FAQ says if you change your mind, you can put the $30 towards a mini plan or more flexible seating option.

I'd still love to know how many deposits they took though.

They didn't. I don't expect them to either. I can't remember them ever doing that in the past.

We went to the Chasers game Saturday night. Crazy how many housing options going up all around the ballpark now. The townhomes on the east, near the lake, plus the Venue at Werner Park apartments on the west are all really going up fast. Good compliment to all the single family homes that have and are being built out there.

Sharp and Bennington just reported that over 750 deposits were received in the first week. Also Gary Green will be on their show later this morning.

I know Green is a diehard Mets fan and became friends with Strawberry years ago. Since Green has owners the team Darryl has made a bunch of appearances in Omaha.

Very cool video, thanks for posting. Amazing to see how much that area has changed since WP was built (with room for more stuff to come).

You can also really tell how much the new scoreboard was an improvement over the old one.

Thanks Guys! Sure has changed in 10 years! A few more neighborhoods need to go in and then you should see the commercial take off.

I'd been interested to see how the new MLB standards would affect the Omaha franchise. I'm glad they have ownership that will invest in this stuff.

Werner Park and Omaha Storm Chasers

Werner Park is the home of the Omaha Storm Chasers, the Triple-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. The ballpark is great for both baseball diehards and those looking for fun and relaxing entertainment in a family atmosphere.

From the Tuesday W-H-

“On a 4-0 vote, the board agreed to enter into a $76,000 contract with DLR Group Inc. for the architecture and engineering firm to come up with designs for renovating existing areas that will result in locker rooms for female staff members, an expanded weight room and a players lounge, among other improvements.

Perhaps most noticeable for fans, the upcoming renovations at the county-owned park will see the batter’s eye beyond the center field wall rise to a minimum of 30 feet above field level. The total anticipated construction cost for the park to meet MLB’s standards is $500,000.

Once DLR comes up with designs, the board will hire a construction manager to oversee the project. Construction is anticipated to begin in October and is expected to be completed by March 15, according to board documents.

Werner Park is home to the Omaha Storm Chasers, the Kansas City Royals’ Triple-A affiliate. The ballpark also is home to the Union Omaha soccer team.“..

This is difficult for me to read (see the batter's eye?), but does this say they will build a 30 foot wall in the outfield?
This would be a decent loss for the fans. I usually sit out in the grass there (and at other ballparks) or hang out at that bar there.
Are they doing this at all AAA stadiums? Are they going to do this at the spring training stadiums too? This is really going to change the vibe at these smaller stadiums.
