You were about six miles directly west of me at that time then. I do believe I saw a lot of flashes and correspondent thunder from that direction, but there are a couple-few very large hills that would limit the effect. The effect this city's rolling hills has on lightning events is amazing. You're either where the lightning strikes, or far from it and still hear it like it was close.

Funny, I was leaving Hy-Vee also, but the Applewood one at 96th and Q and driving south towards Bellevue. We hit the heavy rain around Hwy 370 and it didn't let up. The lightning was very intense, especially when we were headed south. The best part about the storm is there weren't any reports of hail.

In case you were sleeping at 5am this morning... There was a tornado warning just SW of Omaha... The "Local" early morning tornadoes this week are kind of scary.

Yes, there have been so many "pillow twisters" this late spring back there. It is kind of scary... (Lol. I just made that silly term up. Its not a funny subject, though -- of course. I was trying to think up a term that would mean a "night tornado" when people could be sleeping. It's like "pillow talk.")

I'm kinda jealous about the weather you guys are getting back there lately -- and I'm not usually ever the "jealous type." Sounds dramatic.

You mention the torrential rain here. That is the thing: Omaha is getting more torrential rains (they say because of climate change), and I noticed that back there. I can remember some thunderstorms being so wet & soppy, making you feel almost like you were wet, even if driving around in your dry car with all the windows rolled up. I believe that's one reason they are aggressively building dam sites around Omaha nowadays... It rains like you're in Miami or Havana sometimes. (Yet, that's a sign of excess heat, I hear. It's been kinda cold this year.)

Timing looks to be overnight on all our next few chances. NWS currently has us at slight risk Sunday and Monday.

Last I saw, Omaha is at a slight risk for severe weather starting late this afternoon into the evening. At just after 12 Noon, the conditions sure seem right for thunderstorms to fire up later in the day/tonight...

Yes, the wording in the forecast is "slight chance", but "slight risk" in the convective outlook has a different meaning The forecast is more focused on painting a general picture, while the convective outlook is focused on severe threat i.e damaging winds, hail, tornadoes. 20% chance of thunderstorms tonight, but we aren't even in the marginal risk in the convective outlook day 1 (today), hence I don't expect much to happen today/tonight. It could rain and sputter a little thunder tonight, but I'm looking at tomorrow and Monday night/overnight as the main threat for severe weather.

I’ve been sitting outside on the patio for the past couple hours. Definitely a nice evening to be outside and enjoy a few adult beverages..

It does feel like we’ll at least have a heavy rain event overnight. I see that Tuesday though, the Omaha area has an enhanced risk for severe weather...

This May has been such a departure from the last six (when I started keeping track). So cool, so wet. I'm not complaining about the cool, but the wet. This May has felt more like April. Rainy, cool, benign thunderstorms. I've never wondered when it was going to warm up and dry out like I have this year. I guess if you look at how long winter held off, then held on, then there might be a connection there that caused spring showers and cool weather to hang on later.

Yet, as I was typing my last post, this happens. Too bad it will be overnight. Hopefully on the sooner side, as I may be able to stay awake to see what happens if it is around 2am

That did a few million dollars hail damage to roofs and vehicles for sure. I just woke up about 10 minutes before it hit in Millard about 4:20 AM and watched the whole thing roll in. The hail was not huge but it was coming down hard. Not the worst I have seen in Millard but it was above average damage for sure.

2nd. We also had a Severe Thunderstorm Watch on 05/23/19 until Midnight..

This storm that hit about 4:30am this morning was crazy. Yards covered in hail. I hate storms like this.. Roofers will get some extra business courtesy of this storm...

The Moderate Risk is fairly close to the Omaha Metro area today.

Regarding the hail size, I’d say you’re right- it was pretty much dime size hail.. Just a LOT of it. My SUV was outside in my driveway during the storm and thankfully, didn’t sustain any damage (than I can readily see anyway)...

Wow, just watching the midday news and the pictures of the hail and damage are crazy. A lot more happened southwest of where I am. I actually dont have any cleanup to do. Again, sucks that it happened at 4am. Would have probably been a beautiful storm to watch come in at 4pm.

I drove by 90th and Dodge (just south), 114th & Center, 120 and Arbor (just west), and 117th and Pacific (just south). Large piles of hail still on the ground, 8 hours later!

The hail storm woke me up at 4am but a few hours later you could hardly tell there anything last night in Millard

I had hail all around the perimeter of my house, part of my roof and yard when I left for work this morning. Brad’s home location also sounds like another epicenter area for the hail...

I had nickel to quarter sized hail, and A LOT of it. At 8 PM I still have several inches in a drift along the west side of my house.
The garden is shot to heck. Most of my hanging baskets broke and fell to the ground. I will start over with replanting as soon as the weather calms down, but I got to tell you it is terribly disheartening to have to do so. My tomato plants were all almost 18 inches tall when I went to bed. When I woke up they were 4 or 5 inch sticks. It just hurts.

Ouch, I'm sorry. My garden is the whole reason I pay such close attention to the weather and I could imagine your frustration. That is the first place i looked when i woke up. How many plants did you have?

Two and a half months after historic flooding, rising rivers on Tuesday were again closing roads and threatening homes and businesses in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa.

Along the Missouri River, rural and riverside residents in Mills County, Iowa, were preparing to evacuate. Along the Platte in Nebraska, residents around Hanson Lakes, south of Bellevue, were sandbagging a levee that was already being overtopped by the river.

Major routes have again begun closing or restricting travel, including Interstate 29 in Missouri and two key Missouri River crossings between Nebraska and Iowa. (U.S. 34 south of Offutt Air Force Base closed Tuesday evening and Highway 2 at Nebraska City closed Saturday. A third is at risk of closing, Interstate 680.) A detour also is in place off I-29 between 25th Street and 16th Street in Council Bluffs.

Over the last week, rainfall totals in the region have been running at 400% to 600% above normal, according to the National Weather Service. The Missouri River, which has been flooding through holes in levees since mid-March, rose rapidly Tuesday. It’s expected to continue rising into late this week. The Platte also was rising.

“Everything is saturated,” said Sandy Weyers, director of Cass County Emergency Management. “There’s no place for this rain to go.”

I will take a little over 14 days of dryness. I do still want my yearly dose of severe weather. What we've had so far hasn't qualified yet, to me.

I was sitting in Raising Canes eating on 108th & Q watching that storm today about 4:30 PM. It looked like little baby tornados were forming and then going away in that cloud.

Welll, considering I just had hail pummeling our neighborhood and my property (to the point where I’m having an adjuster visit my residence to check for roof damage), I’m done with severe weather for this year...

Well, I'm happy to point out that my speculation (I stated during the terrible winter) that this could be a very tornadic spring for the USA, after the long, cold, unusual winter that occurred this year, turned out to be an accurate speculation. It's been a "tornado frenzy" this year through many states.

I still think there could be a possible connection between cold, severe winters, and very tornadic springs. Again, I first thought of that connection learning that Omaha's legendary '75 tornado happened following Omaha's legendary '75 blizzard. (Plus, May 6, 1975 was an outbreak of several tornadoes. Plus, Omaha had a small tornado in March 1975. Plus, I've learned Lincoln had spring '75 tornadic activity, too.) I don't really hear weathermen ever talking about that, though.

We are at slight risk for both tomorrow and Friday. First time in a long while we've been the focus area, though it doesnt appear anything crazy will happen.
