Bill Randby, this evening, pretty much threw a wet blanket over this possibly for Thursday and Friday..

I hope he’s right...

I was at the Fort Worth Stockyards recently when a storm hit and there was a torrential downpour, lightning/thunder, and a big rush of wind. Lights flickered on & off at the western show I was at. Telephone poles were down in the area. So, I got my "Storm fix!" I still feel thunderstorms are generally stronger & more fierce in the more Northern Midwest, though.
I can get pushed out because I'm "too much" for some. Then, an observer of me comes suddenly swooping in to "fill my shoes." People are always more accepting of the new one, because their feathers aren't truly ruffled by them. (Yawn) I can count on it every time.

The NWS is staying with their earlier prediction that whatever happens around here tonight/tomorrow morning/tomorrow night/Saturday night has potential to be severe. I'm not saying something will happen, but its been a long while since we've even been at slight risk, let alone 3 days in a row. And conditions just feel right right now, with the sun coming out in late afternoon and heating everything up/ being muggy out already. Dew point tomorrow night is supposed to be 69. The conditions are there at least...

Sean Everson reporting tonight that there could be strong thunderstorms moving through the area around 3, 4, 5 in the morning tonight, as well as again after 10pm tomorrow night. Their storm predictor indicated clusters or a line of strong storms.

Well, it looks like the Omaha metro has dodged another bullet as no severe storms hit overnight here. The latest KETV forecast shows we should be pretty much dry throughout the day today..and that both CWS games should be completed rain free..

As for chances of severe weather for the Omaha area moving through Sat/Sun, this appears to have been diminished (thank goodness!)..

What would be great, would be 7 consecutive dry and sunny days.. My hope is starting at some point next week, this will happen (fingers crossed)...

Sure. It's a good thing. But, deep inside you're disappointed, because there's that side of you that still wanted to see some action, right?

I get it. I feel the same thing everytime a tornado watch expires, or is lifted.

(Teasing ya... I don't really assume that is you. I do feel that way, though. However, I'm always craving the amazing attributes & power of the storm displayed, free entertainment and a free show better than the best cinema, coming my way in the humdrum periods of life, never wanting to see anybody's property damaged or hearing anybody got a scrape. We all -- weather buffs, storm chasers, ect. -- get it, I think.)

Nope. I’m never disappointed when severe weather misses us (regardless what time of year it is). And I’m always thankful when it does..

Don’t get me wrong, I like watching storms and have always enjoyed watching clouds and cloud formations. But I don’t “hope” for severe weather; and I’d like to believe nobody here does either..

But you do get what I’m saying :thumb: ...

That's healthy.

I, by no means, would ever want a tornado to lay ANY town in shambles. I was in Joplin, MO a year after their big tornado hit. Believe me, Ive seen what a bad tornado can do. It's terrible. The power of nature can be shocking. The Greensburg, KS event makes me almost shudder.

If I lived out in the Nebraska sand hills, and a "Tornado on the ground!" meant watching the funnel move across grazing land from a safe distance, and hail hurting nothing more than some prairie grasses & prickly cacti (and not crops), and wind hardly downing anything on the landscape but a few sparse trees, than I would find that all exciting and amazing to see -- and it would all be harmless. Living in Omaha, though, you don't want that exact same type of weather event to sweep in and cause a path of wreckage through your town, leaving a trail of heartache and tears. Yet, just because your in Omaha at that moment, when a watch is posted in the area, announced with a "beep...beep...beep" on TV, doesnt mean you can just "turn off" your inner desire to witness that kind of amazing weather either.

So, all the weird guilt and confusing "mixed bag" of feelings here IS really normal for any "storm chaser" type person. Ive had to sort through all these feelings, when a weather watch is posted while in Omaha, and something in me perks up. I dont feel bad anymore, because I have logically defined I have typical "storm chaser" feelings and impulses in the city, or outside the city.

I'm not asking, or praying, for it to come. I simply want to witness the rare event when it does come my way. If I had the time & means to be a "storm chaser", I'd be driving to meet it. Instead, I'm poised, ready, and watching when one comes my way -- in Omaha or not in Omaha. Ultimately, the weather is nothing I can control either, so if fierce weather does strike somewhere, I'm not the one to blame at any time. That makes me feel better, too.

Peace...

I don't find anything wrong with hoping for your run-of-the-mill severe weather to happen, as lightning, ordinary hail, high winds, and even the lower-end tornadoes cause minimal damage and are hardly a threat to life. Ive grown to accept and embrace that kind of weather as a part of my love for Omaha...I don't wish for big tornadoes, I wish for exciting weather. Exciting weather very, very rarely poses a threat to life, or causes significant property damage. So i don't find anything wrong in craving it. After all, it will, or will not happen, regardless what any of us wish to (or to not)happen.

I once again attended the annual Midtown Crossing Zydeco Festival today. Zydeco music is so much fun, and ever since attending several annual outdoor New Orleans Jazz Fest concerts I fell in love with the infectious and happy-go-lucky beats, that just call out to even people like me with two left feet to get up on the grass and dance.
What does any of that have to do with this thread? Well, if you attended this year’s totally botched event you know that some doofus pulled the plug on the entire day’s worth of outdoor performances because there was a 30% chance of rain late day. W T F?
Even worse, the event had been advertised for a month or more as being “dog friendly” and one you could bring your lawn chairs and coolers with beer and wine (no “hard liquor”) and enjoy a day in the park watching more than half a dozen bands perform. Almost all of that got wiped out today because the event organizers posted that Omaha was experiencing “inclement weather.”
It neither rained, or hailed, or was even windy all afternoon and evening long. Omaha was never under any weather watches or warnings all day long. But apparently because there were some clouds periodically filling the partly sunny sky the outdoor concert for 4,000 was moved to a private event center that the fire marshall said could hold about 300 people, and when concert goers tried to enter with their dogs and coolers they were told to leave, because there was a cash bar for all alcohol.
I only live 20 minutes away, so my friends and I could easily and quickly have returned home if we wanted to. But the scores of people with pets couldn’t watch any of the performers unless they first drove home to unpack FiFi or Fido, and the rest of us were basically given the option to leave our beverages on ice and pay up at their bar if we wanted a beer or some wine.
I complained...mightily and incessantly to the hall manager, who kept saying something about city ordinances not letting outside drinks of any kind come into his hall. I showed him the Facebook page of the event that clearly stated that pets and “soft” booze were allowed. He finally literally threw up his hands and said to me “If I give your group a bottle of wine will you please leave?” I said “of course”, and we went out on the patio and drank his wine and our wine and had some decent Cajun inspired food before the late day sun got too much for us and we left about 6 pm.
I guess that the event organizer must have been new to the idea that outdoor concerts sometimes get rained on. S/he must have been too young to have attended Woodstock, or to have seen the film.

Well, to each their own.. I’ll just say this, I’ve never known anyone.. ANYONE in my 57 years of life who is a property owner, tell me they hope for or “crave” severe weather. Personally, I’ve been a homeowner in Omaha for 20 years (specifically, it’ll be 20 years this November).. And severe weather over that time has caused 10’ s of thousands of $$ worth of damage to my home and property. I’ve had 2 roofs replaced..trees damaged and removed etc etc. So yes, when I read and interpret someone who hopes for severe weather or craves it, admittedly I get a bit offended..

But be that as it may, I’ve also experienced, personally, the destruction and devastation an EF4 Tornado can cause.. So I’m probably also a bit more heightened in the sensitivity area when I read certain comments in this thread which intimate a “desire” for severe weather..

That said, everyone is entitled to their opinions. That’s what makes this forum a great sounding board. I completely disagree with the opinion of hoping for or craving even the slightest event of severe weather. I think for those that do, if they actually owned property, they might have a completely different opinion..

We live in the Midwest. I get it. A by product of this is the potential for extreme (severe) weather. I accept that. However, I’ll never hope or crave for it to happen.. Again, to each their own...

Busguy2010: I can always count on you "getting it" and myself "getting you." I think we are alike -- when it comes to weather.

NativeOmaha: That's UNBELIEVABLE, the whole ordeal. What a "wacky day" that seems something out of "The Twilight Zone." The canceling of the big concert, and the upheavel & all the disappointments caused, by a 30% chance of rain?

OmahaCowboy: Yes, property ownership definitely is a factor in dreading severe weather. However, even if you own a car, and dont have a garage, you can still be excited by severe weather (including possible hail) on its way. I think being excited a bit about severe weather is simply about if you have a "storm chaser" drive or personality, or a "thrillseeker" personality. Plenty of people don't. I, on the other hand, have driven to meet an F2 hurricane making landfall -- while others were fleeing the coast. It wasnt very smart. It became very frightening. I cant imagine an F5, like Andrew. Since I came out OK, I don't regret doing it. But, I dont plan on ever doing that again.

(Likewise, Ive talked to a couple that had an F5 tornado sweep away their house around them, and they saw furniture, cars, and their neighbors fly over them right as their house was ripped apart. They had mud, grass, and glass all over them. Their neighbors didnt make it. They said they'll never get over it. It can very horrific. )

Astronauts that go on a mission to the moon, men & women who climb Mt Everest, men & women who surf 60 foot waves, and people that descend to the deepest parts of the ocean (like James Cameron) are "adventurous cowboys" in their own right, seeking & pushing & wanting nature's extremes. This is similar, I think. (In fact, Im into space missions, watching big wave surfing, and Cameron's deep sea adventures.).

And, as BusGuy10 pointed out: It will happen whether we like it or not. Back when Native Americans roamed the plains, and before Omaha was ever seen as a city on a map, tornadoes touched down, and severe storms came and went.

I totally believe you, OmahaCowboy, but I cant help but notice you are here a lot. What does that mean? A watchman for Omaha? Or, a secret "storm chaser" within, that's in denial? :) (Kidding)

Within the context of our weather related discussion, I’m neither a “thrillseeker” or a “storm chaser”. But I keep my eye on the sky and hope our area does not get hit with extreme weather..

Owning a car is one thing. But I believe if one actually owns property he lives on, maintains and is responsible for financially..then..a person who might claim previously to hope or crave even the slightest of severe weather, will likely change their tune rather quickly imo..

In any case, looks like Omaha dodged yet another bullet Saturday with the severe weather hitting south and east. I see the extended forecast calls for mostly dry and hot weather for the upcoming week. Maybe I can finally get a wash and wax of my car in :) ...

Replacing a roof and chopping up fallen tree limbs is simple. I had to replace my roof after that freak hailstorm in June 2017. Insurance took care of it and it wasn't even an inconvenience. Normal runofthemill severe weather does no more damage than that. Now, if somebody had a weak silver maple that got blown over onto a poorly built house, I could see why they'd never wish for severe weather, because that would suck. Matter of circumstances I guess. Mother nature took out three trees on my property in the last ten years. They were young, and it just wasn't meant to be. All there is left is two proven steady trees. Trucks been hailed on plenty of times, though I do take care to not let it get hailed on. Liability insurance. Even though I take care of my pride and joy vegetable garden, I still hope for exciting weather. That garden means more to me than anything else that could get damaged by a regular old severe thunderstorm.

I'm just stating my position on it. Normal severe weather under normal circumstances doesnt cause a lot of damage. Most thunderstorms dont spawn tornadoes out of nowhere. Our forecasting of strong thunderstorms is better than it has ever been, to a point that we almost know there is or isn't good potential for a tornado. Generally speaking, on a yearly and storm by storm basis, there is very little to be wary of.

Not trying to change your perspective, just trying to explain mine. And we can get back to severe weather discussion (if anything ever happens :;):

Something is seriously wrong with you.

I have endured countless phone calls and meetings with insurance appraisers and roofing salesmen regarding my hail damaged roof from the late May hailstorm. Plus I spent hours of time and hundreds of dollars replacing pots, baskets and virtually my entire vegetable and flower garden. Seeing my hostas shredded literally brought tears to my eyes.
In the past I have had tree limbs come down in storms, a busted patio table, a busted privacy fence and hail damage to cars. I’ve had my basement flood (I am near a hilltop), and let’s not even discuss damage to trees from ice, slips and falls from ice, a fender bender due to snow flurries hitting cold pavement on a Christmas Eve, etc. And our other home is located less than one mile from an ocean, in an area susceptible though not prone to hurricanes and tropical storms.
I will NEVER EVER wish damaging weather or harm on anyone or any thing.

Gee thanks. You always seem to be on cue to try and grill me when I say something mildly controversial. So what, I like storms. They happen and they always will happen. You don't want to deal with em, then move to Arizona. And by the way I never wished death and destruction on anyone or anything... Severe storms are a normal occurrence and they will happen regardless of our feelings about them. Seems like you failed to read that I too have a garden that got damaged earlier this year, and that my garden is most important to me. I had trees limbs fall, truck hailed on, roof replaced, yeah, it all happened. But I dealt with it. I guess something is wrong with me, I don't carry a victim attitude.

Go say that to REED TIMMER -- in front of his wife.

Lol

Nobody has any right to make BusGuy2010 feel guilty. Nor, does he need me to stand up for him. But, I have to say: He sounds like a hard-working man that simply finds a little severe weather a little fascinating within the humdrum of life, when it does sweep through, beyond any of our control -- appreciating the show, even when it damages his own garden, and work of his hands, not wishing harm on anyone. BIG DEAL. How does that hurt you? Just because he finds it fascinating doesn't mean he conjures up the storm, and invites it Omaha's way. Neither do storm chasers, poised & ready with all their equipment.

Nobody is making me feel guilty either. Its completely understandable to be fascinated, and that's why The Weather Channel continually aires storm chaser-type shows, and that catchy "Storm Stories" series that aired a long time. Even on television, and we're not even talking looking out your own window, severe weather is alarming & fascinating to the human soul, it draws people in to watch and see the power of nature at work, forces much greater than ourselves and out of our control -- and it all spurs "big business" in its own right.

Also, how many of us had dads and grandpas out on the deck or porch watching the storm, with mom or grandma yelling "Get inside and get downstairs! Hon, please!" Maybe it's a "man thing?"
I can get pushed out because I'm "too much" for some. Then, an observer of me comes suddenly swooping in to "fill my shoes." People are always more accepting of the new one, because their feathers aren't truly ruffled by them. (Yawn) I can count on it every time.

Watching the weather channel now and they are talking about us. They're saying we have a 30% of supercell development, large hail, and tornadoes. Wasn't expecting that today. They're thinking we'll have a severe thunderstorm watch issued here soon.

I just got a notice on my phone. That came out of nowhere; I am not a weather expert at all, but the sky was perfectly clear and now to the north out my office window, I am seeing some darkness forming.

There was a good storm down south, maybe Sarpy/Cass county. Nothing really happened around here... And it doesn't really look like anything will. They did say 30%. Some BIG storms down south by Kansas.

Anything can happen, but it seems like the common pathway for storms this year is more south of Omaha, on tne NE-KS line, into Kansas. That's what I'm thinking, anyways.

Oh well, even having some lightning in the distance is a show worth watching. I was in TX recently, and there were occasional lightning flashes and rumbles of thunder overnight. I miss that. You dont really get that here beyond the afternoon/evening. I listen to a "Thunderstorm" CD.
I can get pushed out because I'm "too much" for some. Then, an observer of me comes suddenly swooping in to "fill my shoes." People are always more accepting of the new one, because their feathers aren't truly ruffled by them. (Yawn) I can count on it every time.

Definitely. There was some frequent thunder going on south of here and you could hear it well. Listening to it, I knew it had to be severe warned, and sure enough, I checked the radar, and it was.

Cool... I love a good clap of thunder.

Like Bill Randby... Is Jim Flowers still around? I actually met Tom B. when I was little at the Channel 3 station.

Well, back to the weather. Or, should I say LACK of weather? :)

Thanks...

I still have the KETV tornado pamphlet from around 1984-ish, when I met Tom B. He's on the back of it. It always reminds me of meeting him.

Severe thunderstorm warning # ? I had ~ 50 mph winds, torrential rain and a small amount of pea size hail. Good thunder too. This really came out of nowhere. Have yet to assess damage to the garden.

I just caught myself saying to a friend
"I didn't know we were expecting a gully washer tonight"
Where that term came from I don't know.
Does anyone else use that term?

Didn’t get the high wind or hail in my neck of the woods (132nd and West Center area). But got a good dosing of rain..

My lawn appreciated it...

Close. You can always count on “the Dan” to cover various vocabularies..

Edit- here is a different instrumental version of the same Steely Dan tune, which never made an album-
