Where that term came from I don't know.
Does anyone else use that term?
Growing up on a Nebraska farm, "gully washer" was a common expression for a hard driving rain.

Freshly worked farm ground easy absorbs light to moderate rains, but a hard driving rain causes washing and gullies to be formed.

South side of Kearney under water. Dozen hotels are being evacuated by front loaders and airboats. Local TV reporter parked high and dry on the scene and now abandoned her vehicle.

The photos that are coming in on Twitter are just crazy!
Looks like the Old Chicago that Coyote and I hit during sandhill crane season is still dry.

I stayed at that Americinn a couple months ago. I can’t imagine being evacuated when you’re just spending the night.

Not so much severe, but extreme weather ahead for the next week or so..

Extreme heat in the upcoming forecast.. Wednesday through next Sunday looks like highs in the 100’s. Typical mid July heatwave. This looks like a scorcher...

They're forecasting a low of 81 Thursday into Friday...

As far as I can tell, nobody keeps track of record high lows, but it would be interesting to know how 81 stacks up. As long as I've been paying attention can hardly recall any night with a low in the 80's. I sort of recall 1 maybe 10 years ago.

I should have checked before I said that. I looked back through the last 10 or so Julys and it looks like lows in the 80s have happened between zero and a handful of times each year.

The worst day I saw had a high of 106 and a low of 84 in July of 2012

From the World Herald story today:
The overnight low early Wednesday was 78 degrees, close to the record "maximum minimum" temperature for the date — 80, a record set in 2011.

The overnight low Wednesday night into Thursday is forecast to be 79, near the record of 82, set in 1934. Thursday into Friday, the low is expected to be 80, not far from the record of 83, also set in 1934.

Thanks! That's helpful. I wonder where they're getting their info. I cant even find it from the NWS. I still wonder what the all-time record high low is. I bet it happened in the 30's though.

Still going to be hotter tomorrow and into Saturday, but be sure to appreciate the dramatic cool off that is expected for Sunday and Monday.

Tomorrow is going to feel like 113, and on Sunday it will be a straight 83. That's a feel like difference of 30 degrees. When its this hot out, Sunday and Monday will practically feel like fall.

I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow is the hottest actual temperature of the year, but there is still a lot of opportunity for hot weather.

My gosh, it has been so hot back there. It's went straight from a "Cruel Winter" to a "Cruel Summer."

Speaking of severe weather, I went and saw "Crawl" because of the hurricane scenes. (I think it was smart to combine the hurricane with the suspenseful story line involving the 'gators, instead of another typical cheesy disaster movie storyline that we've seen a million times before.) Oh my gosh, was it super intense. And, the CGI hurricane & alligator scenes were very realistic-looking. I'm not encouraging anybody to see it, as I don't know people's boundaries with entertainment (it is Rated R). Yet, if you like severe weather, you cannot help but find the hurricane seasons fascinating. https://resizing.flixster.com/avz13RFwR ... MDQ4Ozg1OA

(That movie made Florida alligators out to be more aggressive than I believe they really are. However, I've read crocodiles are very aggressive. Also, it made me google Alligator's range boundaries. You would think the band would be right along the Gulf coast, from Texas to Florida. But, their range actually goes inland as far as Central Arkansas, and even the extreme SE corner of Oklahoma. Who knew? It's amazing some of the alligators caught in Mississippi. They are much larger than a man.)
I can get pushed out because I'm "too much" for some. Then, an observer of me comes suddenly swooping in to "fill my shoes." People are always more accepting of the new one, because their feathers aren't truly ruffled by them. (Yawn) I can count on it every time.

Correction: Hurricane scenes -- not seasons. I swear this phone changes words on me unaware sometimes (thinking it is correcting things).

I have to say, the story of this spring and summer has been below average temperatures. It heated up a couple weeks ago, but that was the only short, hot period of the summer. Now we're about to begin August, and the forecast is still calling for low to barely mid 80's for the next 7 days. This is August, there are only a few more weeks of potential for hot temperatures ahead of us.

It appears Fall could be upon us earlier than we expect.

Or maybe warmth will hold on later than it usually does, in correlation to how the late, wet winter went.

All I know is I can visibly see the angle of the sun lowering, and it hasn't been very hot out.

The summer forecast was for cooler than normal weather. Not sure if that is what has happened so far, but if it is, it was predicted.

I wasn't aware that was the forecast, but if you ask me, that is definitely what has happened. I can't recall a spring/summer that had so many below average days.

The garden doesn't lie. My tomatoes and peppers took rather long to take hold and are producing less than in years past.

My tomatoes were thumped by the hail storm in late May, but amazingly they all grew back in no time at all. I have harvested a couple dozen tomatoes so far. The cooler weather has helped diminish blossom rot, though they certainly suffered from it in mid July.

I looked the summer climate data up on the NWS web site. Omaha is actually running collectively 128 degrees warmer than average for the summer air conditioning season. That works out to about 2 degrees warmer than historical average per day. But we are much cooler than the super hot season we had last summer.

I'm basing my opinion with May included because I have always planted toward the beginning of May and never had a problem with it being to cool for tomatoes and peppers. But the cool weather just hung on so late this year. I looked back at the climate records for May, June, and July and here's the story they wrote:

May- there were 17 days of below average highs vs 12 days of above average highs. During the below average days, the cumulative high was 179 degrees cooler than average, or ~ 14 degrees below average per day. In whole, the month of May saw a -81 degree departure from normal highs.

June, a 17 day stretch from the 9th through the 25th where all but 3 days were below average. There were more below average days in June, but the hot days were hotter than the cooler days were cool, giving the whole month a +6 degree departure.

July, there were more above average days, but the departure from average was -5 degrees on the month, meaning the cooler days were cooler than the hotter days were hot. To end July, there was a 11 day stretch where only two days were above average, and 7 were well below average.

The likelyhood has gone down from 60% to 30% since I was paying attention to it last night, as has been the story of the whole season, really.

We were just in Sioux Falls about 3 weeks ago and ate at the Pizza Ranch, the building it was in is probably going to be demolished.
