Good to see all of the new buildings going in on campus. It is much needed for the engineering college and mable lee was well outdated. I am thinking that the university wanted to get these projects announced before the new athletics facilities so that there isn't a backlash about how it is a university first not a professional sports organization.

UNL breaks ground on College of Engineering's $97 million Kiewit Hall

There are already two holes in the ground where the future Kiewit Hall will rise near 17th and Vine streets on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's City Campus.

The 181,500-square-foot facility will redefine the College of Engineering's footprint at UNL when it opens to students in the fall of 2023 as a new hub for engineering education.

On Monday, UNL ceremonially broke ground on the privately funded $97 million facility, which is part of a larger effort to renovate engineering facilities as part of a plan to grow the college from 3,200 to 5,000 students.

"It is a big day for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the state of Nebraska, and the field of engineering," Chancellor Ronnie Green told a reception inside Othmer Hall, which will connect to Kiewit Hall via skywalk.

We visited Morrill Hall for the first time this weekend (which is a great museum!), and drove past this project. It looks much better in person and really stands out.

I don't want to make this a Morrill Hall thread, but yes, it is very awesome. I have kids under 10 and they absolutely loved it as well. The hall of mammoths is super cool. I feel bad we haven't visited before. We've been in Omaha for 10 years now. Still have to make it to the Speedway museum as well, but might wait until expansions are done.

Sorry to continue the Morrill Hall detour, but any time it gets mentioned, I have to tell people -- get the family membership. It costs $60 (it may have gone up, but I know it's still very cheap), but the thing is it gets you into the Science Museum Passport Program -- which is awesome!

The program gets you in free to science museums all over the country. We've used it to get into the Field Museum, The Adler Planetarium and The Science and Industry Museum in Chicago. We got into the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, the Denver Science Museum, Science City in Kansas City and Washington Pavillion in Sioux Falls. All for having a Morrill Hall membership -- which you can also visit anytime you want.

celebrates new Kiewit Hall opening



LINCOLN, Neb. — It's one of the largest construction companies in the country, based in Omaha. And Monday, Kiewit is leaving a permanent mark on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with the opening of Kiewit Hall. Originally from Colorado, the university of Nebraska's engineering program is what brought Kaylee Cunning to pursue her education in the Cornhusker State.
