Elkhorn Middle School #6

Hearing rumors EPS bought or is looking to buy land near 204th and F for the next middle school.

Anyone have any info on it?

Yes, their most recent bond issue allowed money for the purchasing of land for MS #6. Last I heard they were still determining where the best location would be.

F street is the dividing line between Elkhorn and Millard School Districts so the new school would have to be north of F. There is no available space east of 204th on F and there is a new residential neighborhood under construction on the northwest corner of 204th and F. The School would have to be a few more blocks west around 210th and F on the north side of the street.

I wish the dividing line was that simple!

At 204th the line between Millard is actually at Q St West of 204th not F. It is F east of 204th. It’s very confusing to say the least.

The boundaries were based on farmsteads. If farmer x was sending their kids to Elkhorn then their farm was in that district when codified. Otherwise it was added to Millard. At the time of district codification, Millard was a tiny water stop village and was not able to fight back against OPS and 66, so they got stuck with a large area of Douglas and Sarpy counties that more powerful districts like Elkhorn and Gretna couldn’t support economically.

Now the tax situation between E and M would act to keep as many people in Millard as possible as Elkhorn’s taxes are higher.

Elkhorn was also far enough away that much of the land that became MPS, was not practical. It was bigger than Millard even then.

I guess I never thought of Elkhorn as anything even resembling big back in those days. My family started out in Elkhorn and Waterloo. Waterloo was half the size it is now and was bigger than Elkhorn perhaps as late as the 1960 census. Whatever, no biggie. Your perspective is just challenging my memory. That’s all. Wouldn’t be the first time I misremembered something.

But remember that Millard was maybe 250 people who mostly were German and it was known for a beer hall.
