It will accomplish the transfer of cash from our pockets into the pockets of the rich guys and scammers and politicians. Its for our own good of course. These scammers are going to have projects on every other corner in town town collecting TIFs and tax breaks and tax handouts 20 years from now!

And in 20 years, the recipients of that money will do nothing to keep VP nice. It will slide and the owners will suddenly open a new one needing TIF.

Brick and mortar retail will probably never be what is was in its heyday. Pier 1’s closing is more empty commercial space that Omaha will have to figure what to do with. We already have an abundance of empty space in the city. I was over near the Miracle hills shopping center recently just north of 114th and Dodge and was surprised that the entire shopping center is nearly vacant. To me this is prime property and needs to be cleared for new development either commercial or residential. We just can’t have all these empty and half empty shopping centers sitting around all over the city. It’s time for more infill development instead of always pushing the city west.

Trying to fill it with a constantly shuffling lineup of retail stores seems to be a wasteful way to go about it. I’m a fan of clearing it out to add building stock that is actually warranted.Cermak wrote: Thu Jan 16, 2020 5:44 am Brick and mortar retail will probably never be what is was in its heyday. Re: Official: Village Pointe
18-acre medical campus is to form in fast-developing area near Village Pointe
Connector Building:

Overview:

The connector building eliminates the 175th through street that currently exists. The article sounded like this expansion would incorporate services currently at Nebraska Med's Oakview location. Apparently, that lease is up in 2022, so they have been planning for the expansion at Village Pointe for some time. This is a big project for Village Pointe, but if Nebraska Med leaves Oakview, that is a huge hit to that area.An 18-acre medical campus — anchored by a new 180,000-square-foot structure connecting two existing buildings — is about to form in a fast-developing area of west Omaha.
The Noddle Cos. project builds upon medical offices and services already in the pocket near 175th Street and West Dodge Road and also will feature construction of two parking garages.
...
Construction is expected to launch later this year on the 180,000-square-foot structure that will link the two 100,000-square-foot buildings, 111 and 110 N. 175th St. The price tag of the connector building and parking structures on the east and west ends of the campus is about $100 million, Noddle said.

Not really. They want out of a building that has never worked well. They want to go west for a number of reasons. 1. There are a lot of people moving there. 2. They are successful in VP and there is a demand for primary and secondary care in west Omaha. 3. There are a surprising number of people from rural Nebraska who are terrified of the traffic in Omaha. They can handle 180th and Dodge. They can barely handle Children’s. Getting to UNMC just is the bridge too far.TitosBuritoBarn wrote: Sun May 31, 2020 1:05 pm So they want to eliminate connectivity and move medical offices to a less centralized location? Hmm..

There is speculation going on..
Let’s not assume this VP area development spells doom for the location near Oakview. These facilities will be 6 miles apart and would serve a different metro population base- 140th and West Center vs 175th and West Dodge..
I could see a consolidation of *some* services (as the Dr speculated in the W-H piece. Again, he is speculating).. But a complete Oakview shutdown? I’d be hard pressed to believe that would happen...

The buiding at Oakview that NM wants out of is owned by the Nebraska Orthopedics hospital and they pay rent. This new place in VP puts them in a part of town that is acceptable to the people who think Omaha has bad traffic and they get out of renting a building that has never worked very well for a building that they designed from the ground up.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Sun May 31, 2020 1:41 pm There is speculation going on..

At the expense of eliminating service to a different population base within the metro? I find it puzzling they would potentially leave the Oak view area facility entirely. If so, it seems short sighted to me.. But whatever..

Urban Outfitters moving in.
I figured the day would eventually come when Urban Outfitters would leave North Downtown. I’m a little surprised they chose to relocate to Village Pointe. A lot of their locations are in suburban malls but I kind of thought they’d pick Aksarben or Westroads.

I would think that they are moving down the age market. They realize that college kids at UNO are not in the market for expensive hipster clothes. That the rich people living around VP (and lets all be honest, that the neighborhood around VP is not middle class and even Westroads has more immediate middle class people near by even with Regency next door), are full of aging hipsters looking to stay cool and the children of the rich who can afford to shop at the other high end clothing stores.
Honestly, I have two kids in the 30s. One is a Burner and would not be caught dead in clothes from them and the other is a biker and again, just doesn't shop in that genre. I am 60 and would only shop there to buy a gift.

It’s unfortunate..
As the new fangled cliche goes- “this is why we can’t have nice things”..
Too bad an eyesore was created at Village Pointe..
From the W-H-
“More than 100 pumpkins hanging from Village Pointe shopping center’s distinctive pumpkin tree were smashed in an act of vandalism Sunday night.
Village Pointe staff discovered the smashed pumpkins Monday morning, general manager Alicia Peters said. The smashed pumpkins represented about half of the pumpkins on the tree, which has been a Halloween staple for more than 10 years.
“It’s really disappointing to see somebody coming out and knowingly doing something like that,” Peters said.”..

Eh, not quite a big deal. Not saying its a good thing by any stretch at all, but not a big deal. Probably just some stupid teenagers doing what stupid teenagers do. I know for a fact growing up I knew any pumpkin I put out on display was subject to smashing and had a few of my own smashed. Part of the reason I don't particularly like west Omaha is because it is a good environment to raise kids but at the same time, the soft boys and girls think they own the place. I hope the assailants get a time out or at least a good talking to

Wasn't there some TikTok trend a couple of years ago of kids trashing bathrooms? Things like ripping mirrors, paper towel dispensers, and toilet paper dispensers off the wall, kicking the flush handle into it breaks and sprays water, jumping up and down on the sink until it breaks away from the wall, kicking/punching holes in the walls. One guy would record while the others ran around the bathroom like crazy destroying as much as they could as fast as they could. I know they had issues at some of the local middle schools with the school restrooms being destroyed. That "trend" gave way to the Kool Aid Man trend where kids were busting through fences.PotatoeEatsFish wrote: Sat Oct 08, 2022 5:10 pm Cold Stone probably just doesn’t wanna clean the bathrooms there’s no way in heck you could do thousands in damage to a bathroom without a sledgehammer

Maybe I’m just getting more coggety in my old age but maybe if one of the vandals were caught and his or her head was stuck into a toilet while it was flushed a few times (are those called Swirlies?) we would see an end to such criminal behavior.
I totally sympathize with these businesses. When my brother owned a small restaurant downtown a number of years go some idiot customers busted a pipe from a toilet which caused flooding. The repair bill was well over $3,000.
I’m not sure why any unaccompanied minor under 21 would be allowed into a liquor establishment to begin with.

That was definitely a trend like a year ago something like “plenty of licks” or something. I think hat died thankfully but it was a problem for a while. It was mostly schools but it wouldn’t shock me if they did it in businesses.
