Early Bird is opening a second location here, in the former Wheatfields spot. That's a big win for Shadow Lake in several respects. Really exciting news.

That's an interesting move. Shadow Lake is a much different concept and has a different clientele from the Blackstone District, at least on the surface.

You're 100% right, which is why I think this is such a big win. I'm looking bigger picture than just Early Bird. IMHO this signals (hopefully) a move towards the sort of development omaha79 described earlier in this thread (and to what the new management alluded to when they took it over) -- more creativity, a focus on smaller boutiques, locally owned bars and restaurants, etc. and not so much on giant mall chains. We'll see if it's just a blip or if it's something more, but given what the new management said they envisioned, this seems promising.

I hope it works for them. They need some sustained momentum. Between this, Burlington, and five Below, i think it's a step in the right direction. That bay has had some difficulty and I also agree that at first glance Early Bird doesn't seems a better fit for Blackstone than Shadow Lake, but you have to start somewhere. The same old, same old hasn't been cutting it. They will be competing with First Watch right up the street though. That could make it interesting. I suppose there should be room for two Breakfast spots in Papillion.

Leasing agents have been talking about more announcements coming and their hints are towards more local boutique o. The mainstreet. That would be a great fit with Stam, EarlyBird, etc.

Nebraska Brewing is closing their restaurant at Shadow Lake at the end of the year. Announced yesterday on Facebook:

Sounds like they're shifting their focus to their taproom and outside distribution businesses, which seem to be more successful ventures than the brewpub was. I like several of their beers and enjoy the taproom. The restaurant was very "meh". Never had anything terrible, but never anything I'd order a second time either, so we stopped going despite it being five minutes from our house.

As for Shadow Lake...one step forward, one step back.

I have had the feeling for several years now they were only focusing on their LaVista Tap room and just let the Papillion brewpub hang around. The last two visits to the brewpub they only had their core beers on tap and nothing special. NBC makes some great brews, but their core beers are just decent every day beers. There has really been a shift over the past couple years, where people that seek out breweries want to try something special, something new, or a different spin on their normal beers. They have all that at the tap room, but not in stores and from my experience, never had that at the tap room either.

NBC has some of the best barrel aged beers produced in the metro area. Their Barrel aged Fat Head (Barleywine) is fantastic. Always enjoyed their MOAB (Mother of All Bettys) too.

Overall not surprised to see this close. There are now only 3 breweries in the metro which serve food. (Upstream, Benson and Jukes).

I agree. The brewpub was pretty meh. Back in 2007-2009 we used to go there often. there weren't too many breweries back then, and certainly not alot of local brews in Sarpy County. Now, it's micro brew central in Sarpy County. You need to be exceptional at food to draw people in for a brewpub when there's roughly 6 local beer tap rooms within 3 miles. Unfortunately, NBC was never exceptional at their food offerings and their beer selection there was limited. The tap room is cool. Better lighting, way more beers, free video games. That's where I prefer to be socially at this point.

I have no way to corroborate this, but someone told me they've heard DJ's Dugout could take over the old NBC Brewpub location. Ugh. Just Ugh.

It's almost comical if true. Keep being you Papio/La-Vista. As if we don't have enough sports bars with Buffalo Wild Wings, Jerzees, Refs, Beyond Golf (more upscale but still), Hooters Opening soon, Ozzy's Roadhouse, Old Chicago, Good Life. Heck, even Mama's Pizza and Liquid Sunshine Taproom out there essentially serve as sports bars.

And, before you go saying this is what the market wants, the list of those places that have failed is pretty significant too like Fire Barn, the one that was there before Refs on Giles, Icehouse, Bostons.

At the same time, there is all of one restaurant in the 2 towns combined to get a steak. That's why Texas Roadhouse looks like depression era food lines even on weekdays. Just very little vision in the area.

Saw a couple of days ago that Real Deals relocated to the mainstreet of Shadow Lake
Also Early Bird did say they are going there.
Both great things for Shadow Lake as both are successful locally owned businesses which is what Shadow Lake needed more of.

When is Early Bird supposed to be opening in Shadow lake? My wife pointed out that she's seen no sign of construction. No one coming in and out of that location. No sign of dumpsters there. No sign s saying "coming soon".

I'd hate for this to be one of those that quietly died behind the scenes. The same thing happened with the owners of Vis Majors plans for an adult soda fountain in Little Bohemia.

Interesting. I looked at their original facebook post and someone else posted 2 weeks ago "Is this still happening? drove by but it seems like construction hadn't been started yet."

There is no response from Early Bird to this post.They will have to move quick if they are going to get this open by March. Seems like a stretch at this point.

FWIW I drove past tonight and there was a lot of work going on inside, and a construction dumpster in the parking lot. Maybe they just started recently?

That's really good to hear. I hit that Hy-Vee at least twice a week and nothing had been started prior to the new year.

Just read a post on another forum from a guy that said he went to NBC at Shadow Lake on 12/31 which he later found out was their last day in business. They actually sold him a gift card on their last day of business without mentioning they were closing. When he later called the main office about it they basically told him he could still use it to buy NBC beer and they wouldn't refund it. Pretty crappy thing to do.

Restaurants (and convenience stores) in general are mostly all guilty of inundating people with signs and notices. Nobody reads them. It would have been nice if they informed him when he made the purchase just to verify, but at the end of the day... caveat emptor.

That is fair. I get that. At least he can still use it and if he's not a beer guy, he can regift it to someone who is. It's not a total loss like some shady businesses that sell gift cards than go out of business on January 1st.

Losing Pier One is another big empty hole in Shadow Lake. that's 2 big mid size bays that were vacated or announced as soon to be in the last month with NBC and Pier 1.

I didn’t even know that Pier 1 had a store in Papillion. I now see that all Nebraska Pier 1 stores are closing. Sad to see a diminishing of retail choices. They had some fun merchandise.

Saw this weekend that a new store went in on the little main street, just up from the European Chocolate Store. Talked to the owner and she said she relocated an existing store to this location. Great news for the main street that they are looking for more local retail boutique. I think it was called Real Deals - nice store and very nice owner.

Shadow Lake is having some recent wins

4 new announcements - all local small business
Two of them being retail boutique on the mainstreet and both owners said that their sales went up with their move.
Two others being 2nd locations of great local places
Early Bird said on social media that they will be open next week or so and are in the old Wheatfields.
Copps Pizza just announced going into the old Nebraska Brewery space

Drove thru the other day and quite a few more cars that had previously seen.

43 stores announced to close and the list did not have any in Nebraska closing. They are changing their model slightly with the new CEO, but not going away. Unless something was announced more recently Nebraska stores are not going away.

The Shadow Lake location has been a ghost town for years. I went in there and it was half empty. I also went to the one on 72nd and Pacific and it wasn't nearly as barren with empty shelves. I thought around Christmas that the Papillion location was dead store walking. This wouldn't shock me at all.

Well, not yet. We shopped there yesterday and they have a large NOW HIRING sign in their window. The store is less cluttered than usual, but we haven't been in a BB&B since before COVID.

Bed Bath and Beyond is in fact closing. Signs went up today.

But announcement that Olive Garden is opening a location here is imminent according to Mayor Black.

So they lose one giant national chain, and gain another.
