I really have no problem with the timeline..I think it’s reasonable..

They’re updating 3 projects and their landscapes all the way to the riverfront (GLM, Heartland of America Park and the ConAgra site). This takes time..and I’d rather the city/developers take that time to get it right, rather than rush through and potentially cut corners...

Because the project is such an engineering marvel. All that water current. All the wind sheer worries. All the math required to master the Metal stress, and looking for bedrock.

They can build 3 miles of Freeway faster than they are building this project. But a Freeway must be so much more simple than 1/2 mile of dirt.
It’s dirt, a bit of grading, a bit of drainage, then finish it.

Heck yeah! Moving that dirt is complicated. Flew kids in from MIT to write a Doctorate on this complicated project.

Lol critic.. It’s more complicated than that.. First, you complain of a lack of vision, then you want them to get it done already.. One does not correlate with the other..

You stated you’re not against the project in a recent post.. But wowzers, how about allowing them the appropriate time to complete it? They’ve made a timeline and from all accounts they’re following it..

As one of my friends likes to say- Geez-e-Pete’s :lafcry: ...

If this was planned as an architectural marvel ... okay.

It’s precisely because there is no vision that this project could likely be done faster. 5 Years man. Even the First National Tower was completed faster. And the easy part of the Mall ... still 3 years start to finish.

What’s the “appropriate” time? Are you saying this is way more complicated than a suspension bridge over a treacherous waterway?

There is so much more they could do with the time and money. By the way ... today, no tractors moving.

Everyone would love big projects to get done as fast as possible and I believe the timeline for this project is not out of line. If this was land (90 acres total) that had not been previously developed and loaded with underground utilities I'd agree the timeline was too generous. Given the complexity of the utility work, our long crappy winters which make site work very difficult if not impossible, this timeline it not out of line. Unlike a bridge, where work above the water can continue all winter which is what happened with the pedestrian bridge.

One of the biggest obstacles in building Heartland park was burying OPPD's 161KV transmission line under the lake. This was done but it was crazy expensive. Though that will not be moved for this project I doubt that it doesn't come with some added care while working on the new park.

The new version of the Gene Leahy Mall is just about done. All they have left to do is plant some grass and put up a few park benches. There really was nothing to the project other then tearing down the fruition of millions and millions of tax dollars and returning it to a field. The toughest thing to do on the whole project was to disguise and funnel the millions of dollars to the connected parties involved and making it look legit.

Utility work? Excuse me? You mentioned the transmission line is untouched. There is little “utilities” to be installed. New drainage, yes. Irrigation? Yes. Connect plumbing for modern conveniences? Yes.

4 to 5 years? No.

I can't decide if you're just a troll or really this ignorant with regards to the project & the required utility work. The utility work associated with just the removal of the 13th street bridge alone was very extensive, thats why it was one of the last things removed during mall demo. The amount of communication lines that had to be removed/relocated was impressive. The parks are not in some vacuum in regards to utilities, surely you understand that all manor of utilities run through the park that serve other downtown entities? Right?
I never said that no portion of transmission line would be "untouched" on the 161kv line, only the portion that is buried would not be. You see, the 161 line I mentioned comes out of the ground just north of the I-480 bridge, some above ground work related to the transmission lines will be required due to the extension of Douglas st as it connects to the Riverfront drive. The electrical, mechanical, communications, drainage and irrigation system work required for this project (removal, relocation, new..etc) is impressive whether you believe it or not. I'll rely on my 35+ years of utilities experience to understand and read plans correctly & understand the construction timelines and how they are determined. You may continue to be your negative and combative self or simply go away if you have nothing constructive to share.

When you make your decision let me know!

I have seen this project every day since it started, save from Christmas to end of January. I was there when 13th St was still open, when they closed it, tore the bridge down, and then hauled the dirt in. Now the concrete is laid down. So tell me what part of this massive telecommunication and utility infrastructure I have missed.
OPPD did some work on Farnam that may or may not have been related. It was two weeks, maximum. I don’t recall anything along Harney. And nothing crossing the dirt.
So far as the Douglas St area, again ... 3 years?
I don’t pretend to be a construction engineer. But what infrastructure did it take to build First National Center faster?
Golden Gate Bridge?
The Oresund Bridge - 5 miles of bridge, tunnel and artificial island was completed faster. Including the rail line.
Power lines? heck no. They had to deal with 15 unexplored bombs from WWII. Omaha Can Do?

Fwiw, this article stated a 2021 completion date for GLM. Our family took that into account when we chose to move to 11th and Douglas. I understand timelines change, but I do believe they changed. An extra year is a long time for our 5 year old who thought they were getting a park after this summer of construction.

"“It’s going to be sad while it’s under construction,” she said of Leahy Mall, which should reopen in two years while the broader project takes four."

"She will now oversee construction of the mall, which will close Wednesday to pedestrian traffic and should reopen in 2021."

- Quotes from March 2019

https://www.omaha.com/money/omaha-says- ... 75e5e.html

I also noticed the 2021 date for GLM on riverfront revitalization.com

"8th Street between Douglas and Farnam will close permanently on Monday, August 5 and will not re-open to the public until 2021 when Gene Leahy Mall is anticipated to open."

Actually, after re reading that W-H article link you provided from 15 months ago, then re reading the Riverfront development web page, the GLM part of the development is set to open in 2021 not 2022. This is reinforced, as stated, by their web page-

So the Mall opening is still set for 2021...

We’ll see.. I still believe they’re pretty much on their prescribed and phased timeline..

This article from the Creghtonian from April/2019 also references an early 2022 opening for the GLM phase of the plan-

“The earliest amenities open to the public will be those located in the Gene Leahy Mall section of the revitalization. They are roughly scheduled to open in early 2022.“..

So I think we’re splitting hairs between 2021 and 2022 here, lol..

13th Street through the mud hole is opening. I walked across it today. But car barricades are still up. I guess they got that high voltage line taken care of.

Thinking people want to know .... Why does it take 2 more years for the GLM portion to be completed? In the a North Sea, fighting currents, tides and WWII unexplored bomb, they built a 5 mile tunnel and 12 mile double decker bridge faster than Omaha can build a 3 block long park.

Splitting hairs indeed.

Oh, and by the way ... the Freight on article says the park will start on 14th Street, not 13th.

Some interesting additional detail-

“When the City of Omaha was ready to update its image and revitalize its river “front door”, it selected Lamp Rynearson for design and construction administration services for infrastructure improvements.”..

“As a leader and coordinator of the multi-disciplined design team, Lamp Rynearson developed a Master Plan for the 120-acre site and surrounding redevelopment areas and provided infrastructure design, including grading and demolition, sanitary and storm sewers, stormwater pumping stations, combined sewer relocation, combined sewer grit removal facility, levee relocation, public streets, pedestrian circulation, parking lots, riverbank stabilization, and marina.”..

Quite the detailed construction/engineering task indeed. The link:

New from today’s W-H:

“Downtown Omaha’s 13th Street is set to reopen to traffic Monday, the Metropolitan Entertainment & Convention Authority announced.

The section of 13th Street between Douglas and Farnam Streets was closed and completely rebuilt as part of The RiverFront parks project.

Gene Leahy Mall and the street closed in early 2019 for the $300 million redevelopment that will run from the mall to Heartland of America Park to the Missouri River.”

“Construction is continuing on the entire park project, which is due for completion in 2023.

The Gene Leahy Mall portion is due to wrap up in mid-2022. Lewis and Clark Landing is scheduled to finish in early 2023, followed by Heartland of America Park late that year.”..

ROFL ... your May 30 post brags that completion of GLM portion will be early 2022. Today, you proudly post the “wrap” for the GLM portion is mid-2022. Just a bit more slippage, huh?

That’s some engineering marvel they are designing. Way more complicated than stringing electricity for trains, dealing with ventilation inside a 5 mile long tunnel, building spans of a 12 mile bridge over strong currents and tides.

By golly, by the time Lampry Pearson is finished with their engineering marvel Omaha will be home to the 8th Wonder of the World.

And if there is somebody without a calendar handy ... that’s TWO YEARS AWAY. Already 1+ year old. One block per year. Omaha Can’t Do!

Honestly dude, your shtick here has become silly and tiresome. The completion date has ALWAYS been somewhere in the 2022 range for the GLM portion of the Riverfront project. Again, I’m not involved in determining the timetable..it’s just information we’ve ALL received and I’m simply supplying that INFORMATION from sources. Construction can sometimes be fluid. If that’s not acceptable to you (and obviously it isn’t), so be it- Toughen up buttercup and deal with it..

We get it, you don’t like and refuse to understand why completion for this project is taking longer than your admitted lack of construction/engineering knowledge would desire..

That dead horse died quite awhile ago in this thread :deadhorse: . I suggest you stop wasting the time and energy...

Sorry if the truth hurts.

$300,000,000 today. That’s nearly 1/3 of a billion $$$. BILLION. I, for one, like to know what we are getting or giving up for that money.

So ... get the construction “engineers” to splain it. Explain why “delays” weren’t built into the schedule. Look at the pictorial for the GLM portion and explain what is there that takes two more years.

1/3 of a billion $$$ . That’s U.S., not Canadian.

The simple explanation to all your questions is CORRUPTION. Yes 300 million to turn a once beautiful park into a grass field is an epic rip off of tax dollars. If you have the connections and the strings to pull off getting a piece of that 300,000,000 million dollar heist of tax dollars I don't suppose it is all that difficult to get all the extensions in time you want to finish the project.

$300 million heist of tax dollars? Wasn't a big chunk of this donated? I thought at least $100 million or more?

I for one and really looking forward to this. Number one, glad it will be at street level. Will also be nice that it's been designed for activity vs sitting or just passing through. The skating ribbon is the addition I am looking forward to the most.

Yes, $230 million is private donations. But let’s not let facts get in the way of these tantrums.

Well lets suppose that they only made 70 million to turn that mall into a grass field. They still walked off with millions in profit as there is no way it costed 70 million to tear that mall out and hall it away and fill it up with dirt.

It didn’t..

The mall component is only one part of the $300 million price tag for the Riverfront development plan..which also includes Heartland of America Park and then all the way to the actual Riverfront. The GLM is phase 1 of a 3 phase plan...

Donations or not, there is always a cost. Whether tax money, tax breaks, or opportunity costs. And dust, dirt, noise, air pollution, blight, and so on.

Just drove by today, still a dust bowl. We need a little rain to Settle the dust down. Whole GLM area pretty unattractive right now. Hard to imagine what it will look like when completed. And it will probably take another 5-10 years for the trees to get decent sized. Does anyone know the plans for the WD Clark library ? That building will have a very prominent location on the mall. Is it going to be demolished or rehab ? I actually don’t mind the look of the building. Would like to see the main library moved to 72nd and Dodge area and still maintain a smaller DT library.

I think it will clean up just fine..

I also think a couple of years down the road, many here will be wondering what some were so concerned about..In my unscientific opinion of course...

What you saw was the exact same thing you would have seen one week ago. No work on the GLM portion. Nichts. Nada.

Interesting about the Library. When it was built it looked good. But if you look at the sides now, then go around the country and look at some jails ... no difference. Huge concrete facade. Slits for windows.

A new Library? There is a debate in many cities about the need to build bug Central Libraries. So much is digital. Huge stacks full of books no longer needed. I don’t know, but I have a great idea for the current site. It could incorporate a library. One day, I’ll share it. It will knock your socks off!

The library was built in the time of brutalism. That style didn't age well at all. The World Herald Building and Federal Building have bits of that influence, too.
