Perry has more than 30 years experience in architecture and has worked on some of Omaha's best-known buildings. Currently, his firm is working on the renovation of an historic building in the heart of downtown Dundee. His international study and travels have allowed him to become a widely recognized expert in the preservation of historic buildings. He has participated in the renovation of nearly 100 buildings and has served on the board of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Perry holds architecture degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Illinois.'..

In Part I of this week's show, we'll discuss The Gallup Organization and its operations in Omaha. In 2003, The Gallup Organization established "Gallup University" in downtown Omaha in a brand-new $81 million building, bringing 650 jobs to Omaha's Riverfront. Our guest will be Jim Clifton, who has served as Gallup's Chairman and CEO since 1988. Under his leadership, Gallup has enjoyed a tenfold increase in its billing volume and has expanded into a global company, operating in 20 nations. Clifton in best known in the business world as the creator of The Gallup Path, a metric-based economic model, which establishes linkages between human nature, customer engagement and business outcomes. The Gallup Path is used by more than 500 companies worldwide and forms the basis of most of Gallup's revenues. Jim Clifton and his wife, Susan, live in Washington, D.C. They have three children.

During the second half of the show, we'll introduce you to a true American hero. A Nebraska native, Shane Osborn is best known for his amazing performance as a Navy pilot on April 1, 2001. While on a surveillance mission in the South China Sea, his plane was harassed by Chinese fighter jets. One of the fighters collided with his plane over international waters. The impact severely damaged Osborn's plane, forcing him to make an emergency landing on a Chinese island. Osborn and his crew were held for 11 days by Chinese authorities, heightening tensions between the U.S. and China. He was commended by President Bush for his heroism. In 2003, Osborn and his family moved to Omaha, where he is currently working for a financial services firm. Now he's ready to take on a new challenge -- politics. Shane Osborn is running for Nebraska State Treasurer in 2006. Be sure to tune in to learn more about this fascinating man and his political ambitions. '..

While these new incentives made Nebraska a more desirable place to do business, many people want to go a step further. Exciting things are coming to Omaha's North Downtown ("North Downtown") area. One of those is "Film Streams", the only autonomous non-profit cinema in Omaha and one of the few in America. Its mission is to enhance the cultural environment of Omaha through the presentation and discussion of films. Film Streams will join Saddlecreek Records at "Slowdown", an entertainment facility under construction at 14th and Webster streets. When completed, Film Streams will be a two-screen theatre and will show films seven days a week.

Our guest will be Film Streams director Rachel Jacobson, who recently moved back to her native Omaha after spending five years in New York City. While in New York, Rachel worked for a contemporary art gallery in SoHo, Miramax Films, a non-profit off- broadway theatre and New York Public Radio. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Illinois.

Retail development continues to be hot in cities across the nation and especially in Omaha. That's why we're going to take a look at retail growth and development this week on Grow Omaha. During the first half of the show, our guest will be Don Hunder, President Hunter Interests Inc., a full service real estate development and economic consulting firm based in Annapolis, Maryland. The firm has experience in virtually all types of development throughout the United States and abroad. It specializes in large scale, mixed use development projects in urban areas, the packaging of innovative public/private partnerships, and downtown revitalization strategies. Don will give us an idea of how Omaha's retail environment stacks up with the nation as a whole.

In the second half hour, we'll introduce you to Jim Sadler of General Growth Properties. Jim recently moved to Omaha to become General Manager of the Westroads Mall, Nebraska's largest enclosed shopping center. Jim will tell us what's going on at the Westroads and give us his impressions of the Omaha retail scene.

For the last three years, Scott has served as a board member for the Children's Scholarship Fund, which gives scholarships to children who can not afford the cost of private-school education. He also works with the Boy Scouts Mid- America Council raising money for scouting and their many programs, which benefit children of all socio- economic backgrounds.

This week on GROW OMAHA:

A mammoth development project between Omaha and Lincoln is "on the drawing board". State Sen. Pam Brown of Omaha has proposed spending $3 million to study the feasibility of building an 80-square-mile super lake by damming the Platte River near the Interstate 80 bridge. Proponents claim the mega lake would be an economic development boon, providing big-time outdoor recreation and high-property-value developments. Opponents point to high costs, environmental issues and the demise of Ashland, Nebraska, which would be flooded. To find out about this bold proposal, we have invited Sen. Brown to join us on the first half of this week's show. Be sure to tune in and get the details on a project that would have a huge impact on the quality of life in eastern Nebraska.

In Part II of this week's show, we'll have a progress report on Destination Midtown, an ambitious program designed to redevelop a 3.5-square-mile area just west of downtown. Rod Moseman is Vice President of Economic Development and a 27-year veteran of the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce. His responsibilities include marketing programs to attract new business and industry to Omaha and selected programs designed to assist existing employers. Additionally, he serves as Executive Director of the Omaha Development Foundation, Omaha Development Council and Omaha Industrial Foundation. A native Nebraskan, Rod received a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from the Unversity of Nebraska-Lincoln and has completed advanced studies at three other universities. On the next episode of Grow Omaha, we're going to explore New Urbanism & Community planning and how they are currently being used to make Omaha a more efficient and better looking place. Our guest will be Doug Bisson, Community Planning Manager for HDR, an Omaha-based architecture and engineering firm.

As part of his work at HDR, Doug Bisson led the Destination Midtown and North Downtown studies in Omaha. He has been involved with Leadership Omaha, and the Omaha Landmarks & Historic Preservation Committee. He served on the Omaha Habitat for Humanity board of directors and is a past director of the Ak-Sar-Ben Future Trust. He is also past vice president of the Ak-Sar-Ben/Elmwood Park Neighborhood Association. Doug holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Affairs and a Master's degree in Community & Regional Planning, both from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

This week on GROW OMAHA:

In the first half of this week's show, we'll introduce you to Jim Nagengast, Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer of Securities America, one of the nation's largest independent broker dealers. In 2005, this Omaha- based company grew from 300 to 360 employees and from $304 to $345 million in gross revenue. The company is planning for more aggressive growth in 2006. Additionally, Jim is a candidate for the University of Nebraska Board of Regents, so we'll ask him for his views on the University's role in Nebraska's economy.

In the second half hour, you'll meet Scot Thompson, Chief Operating Officer at C&A Industries, which has been one of the fastest-growing companies in Omaha for several years. This $200 million human capital management firm serves clients and employees in all 50 states. It has 3,000 total employees and 350 in Omaha. As a reflection of its growth, the company broke ground this week on a five-story, 100,000 sq. ft. headquarters near 136th and West Dodge Road (see picture above). The company chose to expand in Omaha despite being recruited by other cities.

As the head of our local government, Mayor Mike Fahey has a great perspective on Omaha's growth and development. That's why you should tune in to Grow Omaha this Saturday. Find out more about Omaha's recent development and the possibility for more exciting projects in the future.

On June 12, 2001, Mike Fahey was sworn in as the 49th Mayor of Omaha, Nebraska. In 1978, Fahey started a small title insurance business, American Land Title Company. He sold American Land Title in 1990 but remained at the company, serving as CEO, and helped guide the growth and direction of the title company as it became one of the nation's largest. He retired from the company in 1997. Throughout the years, Fahey has served in a variety of community leadership positions including the boards of Holy Name Housing, The American Red Cross Heartland Chapter, and Creighton Prep High School. For ten years, starting in 1981, Fahey sat on the Omaha Planning Board and served as chairman for many of those years. Fahey graduated from Creighton University in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He has four grown children - three sons and a daughter.

Good show this morning... Fahey was great (I really like Mike, and I hope he does run for a 3rd term).

Something Fahey mentioned twice which people here will like... he said he likes to call 'North Downtown'... "Market North".

Another concept I heard for the first time and mentioned by Jeff... (probably about as unlikely as a giant lake between Omaha and Lincoln though)... the creation of a single 'super' county which would encompass both Omaha and Lincoln. The census department would have no choice but to look at both as a single MSA (there are no other MSA's with split counties). No sprawl required.

Finally, Mike seems pretty gung ho about light rail... mentioning the Portland streetcars and their role as catalyst for their Pearl District... which he likens to 'Market North'.

It was so good to finally hear Fahey on Grow Omaha..

I loved his friendly 'dig' at our neighbors down south along I-29..

And I also liked what Fahey said about population and job growth for the Omaha MSA being 'less parochial' and more about being just as glad for CB, Blair or Papillion landing a significant employer as it all helps to strengthen the Omaha metro as a whole..As opposed to the growth always being just about Omaha proper..Solid take and solid stance by the mayor..

For the first segment of this week's show, we'll interview Stanley Bing, author of the recently published book, "Rome, Inc. - The Rise and Fall of the First Multinational Corporation." Before being named Dean in March 2004, Louis Pol was Associate Dean of the College of Business Administration and was previously a Professor of Marketing at UNO. His teaching interests include business and health demography, marketing research, and statistics. Dean Pol's research interests include demographic applications, research methodology and statistics, and health care policy. He is the author of six books and has published more than 70 articles, book chapters, and research notes. Dr. Pol was named UNO's researcher of the year in 1995. He serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Hospital Marketing, Journal of Professional Service Marketing, Journal of Marketing Theory and Practice, Health Marketing Quarterly, and Population Research and Policy Review. Dr. Pol is a panel member for a National Institutes of Health (NIH) study section, and chaired an NIH panel from 1995- 1998. He is also a member of Population Association of America and is past president of Southern Demographic Association.
Dean Pol's bachelor and master's degrees are from North Texas State. He holds a Ph.D. in demography, statistics and sociology from Florida State University.

To discuss the increasing role of space and defense technology in Omaha's economy, we'll be joined in the studio by Robert C. Hinson, Sector Vice President & Deputy General Manager of the Defense Mission Systems Division at Northrop Grumman. Mr. Hinson is Northrop's Corporate Lead Executive for the Nebraska region. He has overall operating responsibilities for business in the greater Omaha area.

Prior to joining Northrop Grumman, Mr. Hinson served 33 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a Three-Star General in September 2003. During his distinguished military career, Mr. Hinson held high-level leadership positions at numerous Air Force bases, including Offutt. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee and a master's degree from Arkansas State University. He also completed the Program for Senior Officials in National Security at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.'..

For our first Construction Spotlight, we'll interview Scott Kennedy, Vice President of Ayars & Ayars, Inc. A native of Page, Nebraska, Scott has been with Ayars for 13 years and is in charge of the company's Omaha office.
