Well, the Homers sure got their panties in a twist over a couple of my comments. And the Bobbleheads all dutifully nod in agreement. Truth must really hurt.

I suppose the Almighty Moderator can hit the “ban” button. Woe is me.

Guess that 12 inch shortfall in rain this summer caused a lot of delays. Now I understand. And I thought it was the snow days.

He!l no..

The “Almighty Moderator” is having too much fun seeing where this latest “riverfront rhetoric” is going to take us.. to even consider the “ban button”..

I get the sense this thread outlet is therapeutic for you in some way..

Whine on...

when i think of strict and overbearing moderators, I sure as heck don’t come anywhere close to thinking of Cowboy. And for the record, I’m a Homer and a Gomer and a whole bunch of other unsavory things. But all of you already know that. Critic, I tend to agree with you on several things and disagree on several others. Makes for a good discussion forum I think.
My old signature got too old. So old it was getting almost as old me as me. Yeah, it was up there in years.

Oh, I don’t think A.M. is overbearing. Condescending perhaps.

I kind of got the sense they were saying that as in Homer Simpson. If they are trying to imply that supporters are dumb like Homer, then that is just childish.

It's easy to complain about things one doesn’t understand - I hear it about construction, weather prediction, computers etc. Maybe they needed to let the ground settle. It was a pond for many years, it seems logical that it may sink some over time and it would be dumb to start anything while that is happening. There are a lot of factors in projects like this we on the outside just don't know.
This is my “guess” as well. As a parallel example perhaps, huge mounds of dirt were brought in during construction of the North Freeway in certain areas. These mounds sat there for a couple years and then were removed. Their purpose was to compact the soils upon which they sat making for a solid roadbed.
I think there should be a disclaimer whenever our resident “complainer” posts regarding the Riverfront Development Plan-

“No facts were harmed (or used) by/for the content of this post” ..

In any case, I took a stab that he recently moved downtown in 2018/2019 and was under the impression he lived in the Capitol District Apartments.. Regardless..the point, which he states he didn’t get, was this- nobody forced him to move downtown; and if he’s that unhappy with the current surroundings..no one is putting a gun to his head. Move out and on already.. Skedaddle!..

Additionally, he has no factual proof to back his clams that little to no work is being done on this project.. It’s his Sidewalk Supervisor untrained OPINION based on his untrained observations he states are “facts”.. Of course, that’s baloney and everyone here sees that..

The more whining we read, the sillier it gets. Now that’s a sad, but true fact...

At least when I disagree with Omahacritic, it doesn’t end up being a 50 page response talking about the potential curvature of the sidewalk lines like with RockHarbor.

RH probably inputted more keystrokes than all other posters combined in the few years he was here, from the beginning of Eomaha forums. It was exhausting at times.

It got to a point for me where I just scrolled past all of RH's posts and never read them. Ain't nobody got that much time to read a novella every 3rd post in a thread.

Omahacritic, if you were in charge of developing the GLM and Riverfront what would you do to improve those areas and spur more commercial, residential, retail, etc. development?
Fair question. First, I would get it done! Not drag it out. The GLM portion west of 10th St has been idle for well over 10 days.
Just now getting bids for landscaping? A 10 mile bridge over part of the North Sea, with a 5 mile triple tunnel under the sea was built faster than they are building this thing.
Can you elaborate on how you would "get it done"? What are the things that you know are holding them up and how would you do it differently?

Second, the building that forms the West terminus would be world class architecture. Shorter than the red towers. Majority of it public space, Think Arc De Defense in Paris. Or, Statoil offices in Fornebu, Oslo. (On a smaller scale)
So you would put this on the library site or the block to the east? And this is a non-usable structure that is more for eye candy and the money skyline shot? Because you said in a another post that eye candy should come last.

10th Street bridge ... enlarge it, to make it more pedestrian friendly. The bridge is the connection between Convention Center and Old Market. Create something beyond a choke point. Something a bride might use for wedding photos.
The Harney St intersection .... so how make it a part of the Mall.
I like the idea of expanding the pedestrian walkway parts of the bridge. How would the 10th and Harney intersection be made part of the mall?

Tear down the Big Gray Wall on the Mall. Reopen 12th St to Old Market. Okay, not immediately realistic, but imagine something unique and of smaller scale to complement the Holland Center across the Mall. Where the OM is not separate.
So you are wanting to break apart the mall with a street? Why? Pedestrians can walk the one block across to reach either side and cars can drive one block down to get to the other side?

The Mall ... First, plant Bentgrass, or a hybrid Bermuda. not Rye or Blugrass. A pavilion/stage? No.
Dog Park? While I like the concept, I question if it would really be worthwhile. Most Dog Parks are big. They are easily over 1/3 to 1/2 of a city block. They also become rutted and quickly are just dirt and weeds. Right idea, wrong place? And I’m a dog person!
Heat the sidewalks when it snows. Keep the salt/brine out. Install solar lighting on pathways.
Keep the slide. Play area.
I’ve more thoughts. For later
To me the only way the dog park seems too big is if you break the mall apart like you suggested. Otherwise, it's a nice amenity to have that could play a small role in attracting more residents and residential development.

New Tweet from Omaha Riverfront-

“The future sculpture garden continues to take shape on the north side of Gene Leahy Mall.

On the south side, we're preparing for playground foundational work.

We love it when a plan comes together. #TheRiverFront”..

@ Doctor Fate ...

Dog park ... I didn’t say the planned dog park was too big. I questioned whether the proposed dog park was too small. Most dog parks have runs of about 100’ and have 3 pens. For toy dogs GLM proposal might be fine. But play frisbee with a 60lb German Shepard?

12th St .. I did NOT say reopen 12th St across the mall. I said that by tearing down the gray monster you could reopen the part of 12th St where that monolith now sits, thus reopen that connection from OM to the park. It hardly implied “breaking up” the mall. However ... the monolith would make the perfect site for proposed Science Center.

World class building ... where did I say it would be a useless structure? The examples I cited are buildings that have a purpose and actively perform a function.

Harney St .. meant to say Farnam. But making it a part of the mall ... you expand the park a bit. Realign streets a bit and create some curvature.

As for the rest of people’s complaints ... not a one can answer my questions about the longevity of this project. Only one person has offered anything beyond “because mom said so”. And that one other answer has been adequately beaten back.

You also didn't say the dog park was too small, but mentioned how big most dog parks are. The planned dog park is definitely longer than 100 feet. I live in downtown Salt Lake and our building has 1,000 people with half having dogs, big dogs. We have 2 and one of them is a 60 lb blue heeler/labradoodle mix. Our dog park is smaller than the one planned at the GLM and most dogs at our place are as big or bigger than ours. It hasn't been a deterrent for people moving in or a complaint from current residents.

Your wording made it sounds like you were talking about two different things: remove the monolith and open up 12th street to the Old Market. Then you mentioned the OM not being separate from the Holland Center.

Lastly, you still didn't answer how would you "get it done"? As in, your biggest criticism has been the timeline but I haven't ever seen you detail what they're doing wrong or what exactly you would do differently?

Friends-

It was a beautiful weather day Saturday.. I met a friend for lunch, then spent time downtown this afternoon..

Indeed, progress has been made along the Riverfront construction sites..especially the GLM portion..since I was last downtown a couple months back.. Sometimes you need to step away from the forest to see the trees.. Despite what one person may lead us to believe, again- progress is being made.. There is also signage indicating the GLM portion of the plan will be completed by 2022 (perhaps I missed that signage a couple months back)..

We also have the Riverfront Revitalization web page which gives everyone a detailed time-table for completion of all 3 phases of the plan..

The reality is- There is nothing to be beaten back.. What we do have, is the constant whining from one downtown resident forum member who would benefit greatly from stepping away from the forest for awhile.. Anyone have a spare room in midtown, west O etc? ...

Fate .. frankly, I’d get it done.

You really miss the whole gist of my arguments. Is it willingness to stay in good graces with Dad?

Really, it is difficult to give specific answer to your questions until my questions have specific answers. To wit ... why does it take so long? And the only answer has been Dad telling me “because mom said so”.

I have seen them dig a hole, fill the whole. Dig a hole in the same spot, fill it again. And then did the whole a third time.
The section from 10th to 14th was fallow from May through September. Nobody to explain that. In October, they start digging again.

Completion dates change. Why? “Because mom said so”. It’s a drought year so we can’t blame the weather.

Dad is proud to point out signage that proclaims a “2022 Completion”. Not only a year later than originally promised, but they have given themselves a 12 month window. The end of 2022 ... 2 years away! Project start .. winter 2019.

Basically, they are telling you it is almost 4 years to build an essentially flat Park that is 4 blocks long. The Öresund Bridge from Copenhagen to Sweden was built in 4 years. 7 miles. Under sea tunnels, built an island, and special railroad lines. Is the GLM equally complicated?

So, when you have specific and actual reasons (not speculation)

No.. Because your response, as usual, carried no substance whatsoever..

Just more of the same incessant whining..which has become your GLM topic trademark...

So now you're going to act like a child? You obviously have no clue on how construction works and this constant whining is just getting pathetic now. You've been given reasons but you fail to listen and keep coming up with new things to cry about.

Do you have any idea why they usually wait a few weeks after pouring a road before opening it? Or why they pile dirt and just let it sit for extended periods?

Why don't you contact them and ask your questions and give your feedback? Maybe say you can do better and tell them how. They may be shocked at your utter genius and wonder why they never thought of it.

Then report back and let us know how the layman outsmarted the experts.

I’m so confused how a park discussion became so heated and controversial

Not to stir the pot, but I revisited the initial video presentation about the project. There are a couple, in my opinion, major things that have changed since then. The first, and I forgot about this altogether, but their initial plan was to extend HOA over the train tracks. That must have been cost prohibitive. Additionally, there is the Riverfront promenade. Based on my review of the current renderings, it is not incorporated in the parks anymore. However, it does look like they plan for some kind of walking trail to connect HOA to the Breakers area. I am sure both of these parts of the project got push back from the train people, in addition to cost, but it is too bad that they couldn't at least follow through on the promenade.

I do hope that when we are nearing the completion of the parks in a few years Council Bluffs will start their side of the River. I thought their plans had a lot of good potential in making for a more nature-y experience and a good complement to what Omaha's side will offer.

Yeah, I noticed what you are talking about too. It was apparent that the tracks were never going to be covered completely but it does look like they have done a good job of minimizing and incorporating their presence into the overall scheme. What concerns me the most though is that I did not see the promenade in the photos either. However, I am not necessarily sure this means it will not be built. I definitely hope so, apart from the skating ribbon this was one of my favorite design features of the new HOA park. Despite really good renderings, it's still so hard to really know how things are going to take shape until further down the road. One encouraging thing though is when looking into HOA park from the pedestrian bridge it kind of looks like the beginnings of pylons beginning to to take shape where the promenade would appear to go. Not sure if these are new or just remnants of a previously existing wall that used to parallel the train tracks. In any case though two things are for sure, I am really enjoying watching this process and it's going to be a beautiful transformation.

Friends, an FYI-

For anyone who has a Twitter account, may I suggest you follow OmahaRiverfront’s Twitter page.. If you don’t get the consistent opportunity to visit the downtown core area, this is a very good alternative to keep you up to date with the progress..

They are very good about giving multiple picture updates every week..

There has been some good progress made the past few days along the GLM and Heartland of America components of the Riverfront Development Plan. Some great pic updates over the past few days :thumb: ...

A Riverfront revitalization update with some very cool updated renderings..

From the W-H-

“Gene Leahy Mall is covered by mounds of soil and construction equipment.

Heartland of America Park will sit mostly quiet through the winter as a new layer of dirt settles.

Lewis & Clark Landing is just beginning to be torn up.

The renovation of Omaha’s three downtown riverfront parks continues, and new digital watercolor images offer the clearest picture yet of a future filled with playgrounds and plants, a boat cove and skating ribbon, and plenty of open green space.

Gene Leahy Mall, scheduled to reopen in summer of 2022, is the farthest along. Crews are working to install some of the equipment that will undergird that park, including for a playground near 11th and Farnam Streets that won't be far from the side-by-side slides people associate with downtown.

The portion of Gene Leahy between 10th and 13th Streets will feature an art plaza, social areas with ping pong tables, a promenade where 11th Street would cut through, a dog park and a playground. A defining feature of the space will be a large event lawn that leads to a plaza with a pavilion for concerts and events. Bassett said the design of the pavilion has been refined, which can be seen in the latest images.

The design of Heartland of America Park, scheduled to reopen in late 2022, is about 90% complete, Bassett said.

Plans for Heartland call for a skating ribbon for ice skating and roller blading depending on the season; bocce courts and racing slides; more lawns and plazas, including a space for food trucks; and a natural prairie area.“..

I love the new rendering of the outlay of the GLM and Heartland of America Park. I am also glad they are going with the extended pier. I like the interesting covering:
