Fast Food Talk (KFC on 132nd - Closed)
There is a sign on the door this location is now closed.. I live in the area-132nd and West Center..
No surprise to me. I’m not a big KFC person, but the times I did go to this location, the place was sketchy at best. Really inconsistent service, dimly lit at night which always left me questioning if the place was open etc..
It’ll be interesting to see what takes over this parcel as it’s right next to a Fazoli’s, Runza and an Outback Steakhouse...

Remember the KFC on Dodge at 44th closed recently. Dunno why. But they painted it and it looks like a nice building, just waiting for a tennant.
I wonder if KFC in general is executing a downsizing-plan.

The ones in Omaha seem to be poorly run. I am continually disappointed with the one on 132nd and Maple.

Re: KFC on 132nd off West Center- Closed
The ones I have gone to with the most regularity in the past have been on 88th & Maple, and 72nd & Sorensen. Honestly can't remember anything good or bad. KFC is one of those really rare ones for me... Think it was late 2018 was the last time I had it from the one on 88th & Maple. I don't remember it being bad.
They don't really seem to have a lot of locations. At least there is a sizeable dead zone in Midtown.

Re: KFC on 132nd off West Center- Closed
I’ve never been a big fan of KFC. If I want fast food fried chicken, I prefer Popeyes all day over KFC..and I prefer Time Out Chicken over Popeyes..
As it relates to this now former KFC location, as I stated in my opening post, it’ll be interesting to see what will eventually occupy this parcel. It’s right next to a Fazoli’s and an Outback Steakhouse, and across from a Runza..and there is a Dave & Buster’s within the same area. Perhaps another “chicken place” like a Raisin’ Canes or a Chick Fil A would be a natural.. But the parking lot and in and out structure of this area would create major traffic bottlenecks..especially if a Chuck Fil A would open up shop there.. I suppose there is also a good chance the parcel stays vacant for awhile too..
This area off 132 and West Center is a pretty darn good locale.. Anyone have any ideas of a likely move in candidate?...

Re: KFC on 132nd off West Center- Closed
Agreed. I crave fried chicken so seldom that If I'm going to get it, I'll make the trip and sacrifice the time to go to Time Out... Or if I really don't have the time and I'm at Family Fare, I'll get some of theirs. No Frills/Family Fare's chicken is a-okay IMO.
As far as the 132nd location, there's no telling. The one on Dodge at least got fixed up, but isn't housing a restaurant... Someone is keeping the lights on, though. Seems like its been a year since that one closed. Couldn't tell ya if the one out there would be a similar situation. Same ownership though... Of all the ones I looked at, they seem to own most, if not all the KFC buildings around here. And I think Dodge st was the next most recently closed KFC...

I won’t miss this location. We went through the drive thru here once and they make us park and wait. After they brought our food, we went home and when we got there we found a serving glove in our bag!Busguy2010 wrote: Sat Jan 02, 2021 11:52 pm Remember the KFC on Dodge at 44th closed recently. We went there through drive thru once 30-35 minutes before closing and they said that they were not going to serve any more chicken because they already turned off their fryers.
My uncle is an Owner/Op for KFC's in Grand Island and he was not too pleased when I mentioned this and said he was going to help report it. Very poor service for a few years.

I don't miss it either. I think I went there twice in my life, didn't have any problems myself, but it musta closed for a reason.

Akin to a Burger joint saying they weren’t serving any more burgers or a BBQ joint etc etc..swinquest wrote: Sun Jan 03, 2021 3:47 am We went there through drive thru once 30-35 minutes before closing and they said that they were not going to serve any more chicken because they already turned off their fryers.

No surprise at this 132nd and Center KFC, I’m very interested as to what ends up occupying this location moving forward...

The inside can't be in that bad of shape. The Arby's to KFC remodel took some time.Busguy2010 wrote: Sat Jan 02, 2021 11:52 pm Remember the KFC on Dodge at 44th closed recently. Dunno why. But they painted it and it looks like a nice building, just waiting for a tennant.

30th & Potter is inconsistent too. Chicken is usually ok, sides not so. Hockey puck biscuits.

The Millard location isn't that far away. Less than 10 minutes.
Wendy's or Arby's is probably out too. The Wendy's on 120th recently closed, and the Arby's on 145th made way for the Cane's.

There is also an Arby’s off 120th West Center as well. So Arby’s is out. I’m thinking Wendy’s is a possibility at this 132nd KFC parcel...bbinks wrote: Sun Jan 03, 2021 9:52 pm

All the bases seem to be covered around here...
King Kong tried that location at 156th & Center that didn't work out. Maybe 132nd would be a better location if they want to try a SW Omaha thing again. Abelardo's is always on the table if the building isn't too chic.

I'm kinda doubting that. When they closed the 120th & Center location, they seemed to be all in on the L Street location which is only a little over a mile away.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Sun Jan 03, 2021 10:07 pmI’m thinking Wendy’s is a possibility at this 132nd KFC parcel...

And to me all the national chains seem to be more on a consolidation rip than an opening more locations spree. I'm betting on local, new to market, or sitting. Abelardo's has been on an opening spree in recent years, and I guess they were going to open up around here. So if the price is right.

I dunno. It’s more like 2 plus miles away and serves a different demographic imo. Wendy’s could be a candidate, so could McDonalds and a myriad of the usual national/regional fast food/quick casual chains.. I’m thinking even a Freddie’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers could be a candidate too..Busguy2010 wrote: Mon Jan 04, 2021 1:27 amI'm kinda doubting that. The thing is, this is a prime spot off a busy intersection on 132nd just south of West Center and..the building infrastructure is already in place..a few modifications and a new fast-food location can open pretty quickly..
I remember a dozen or so years ago (2008), Starbucks opened a location in the AK Village area at 63rd and Center. It was a nice, new cafe and a perfect location to accommodate the up and coming AK Village area. The place was open for about 6 months..then, the new (at the time) SBUX CEO decided to close certain Starbucks locations across the US in a cost cutting move. 3 locations in the Omaha area closed (including this AK Village location). It was an unwise business move. I remember at the time saying- Starbucks loss would be Scooters gain and Viola! Within about 90 days that new and abandoned Starbucks became a Scooters and remains one to this day..Some 6 years later, Starbucks opened a location in the AK Village area lol, obviously course correcting the error they made..
I suspect someone will happily fill in this abandoned KFC and if it’s managed well, it should be a success for whoever decides to set up shop...

We'll meet in the middle, it is 1.9 street miles. Still, in the same general area when I look at it. And to me, it looks like Wendy's is in the mindset of improving their better locations and ditching their underperforming ones (see 120th & Center, 90th & Sprague, 52nd & L).Omaha Cowboy wrote: Mon Jan 04, 2021 2:25 am I dunno. There are also a couple examples of other former big chain restaurants that have closed their doors and have not yet been filled. Mcdonald's at 72nd & Lake, Wendy's at 90th & Spaulding, KFC at 44th & Dodge, Wendy's at 120th & Center, I'm sure others. This is what leads me to believe more than likely, it will sit a while, be filled by a local or new-to-market chain... Or you bring up a good point about Freddy's (though they have locations at Millard Ave & Q, and 180th & Center) or another chain that has a relatively small presence in Omaha.
And I didn't even realize it, but Abelardo's took over the old King Kong at 156th & Center, and they're at 108th & Mockingbird, so even they might be out IMO.
But like I said, I personally doubt it'll be a big chain. We will see.

Interesting that there is a Starbucks at 122nd and West Center and one at the 120th and L Marketplace..and both have done quite well over the years. It really serves a different demographic imo..that’s why I think Wendy’s is a possibility. But who knows. These chains have different business models and priorities..so you might be right that Wendy’s is an out..Busguy2010 wrote: Mon Jan 04, 2021 2:51 amWe'll meet in the middle, it is 1.9 street miles. I think this parcel is most likely to be filled by a national or regional chain though..
But it would be nice to see something new to market.. and yes- we will see. In the end, it’s always fun to speculate...

What about non-restaurant options?
We're all thinking about a new restaurant.

Supposedly they're opening West Des Moines this spring.

But it’s pretty much an already made fast food parcel with a decent amount of seating. If memory serves, about 14 or so years ago, they bulldozed the original KFC which sat there and built a new KFC on the same land property. So it’s not even that old a building...

If someone wants the land bad enough, the existing structure is moot. The Sonic on Dodge was fairly new when Chick-fil-A bought it.

I used to have to get steak n shake every time I went somewhere that had one, but it seemed like every time I went, it got less good. I definitely wouldn't oppose it, but I'm not sure it would carry the same excitement for me as it would have 10 or 15 years ago. I haven't had it in probably 5 years, so id go once and if it was like the last time I had it, I probably wouldn't go back.damonhynes wrote: Mon Jan 04, 2021 3:21 pmA year ago I would have backed this 169%. Omaha was home to the first White Castle. I'd take them over McD and BK.
Yes to Whataburger. And for anyone who has had Blake's in New Mexico, I'd take them too.

Re: KFC on 132nd off West Center- Closed
I didn't know that. If the image is correct looks like the address was 102, so it must have been right along Dodge somewhere. Number 2 was at 1002 Harney so 10th & Harney. I wasn't very impressed the two times I had it, but I'd probably give up all my savings if I could go back in time for a couple hours to 1921 and have someone drop me in my new house in Bemis Park, walk up to 40th street and take a streetcar ride downtown with a quarter in my pocket so I could grab lunch here and eat it on the street corner on a cool spring afternoon.

Actually I think White Castle started in Wichita in 1922, and opened in Omaha in 1923.bbinks wrote: Wed Jan 06, 2021 12:16 am Omaha was home to the first White Castle. I'd take them over McD and BK.
Yes to Whataburger. And for anyone who has had Blake's in New Mexico, I'd take them too.

They closed both the Wichita and Omaha locations in 1936.

The KFC at 132 & Center was at one time very nice. KFC’s are very hit and miss. I’ve been to some that are good others not so much. Looks like they may be going through some tough times. Not many KFC’s left in Omaha.
