This might be interesting for those of you that are Husker fans.....memorial stadium got new field turf, and its a throwback to the way it looked during the Devaney era. Link below:

Didn't they just get new top of the line turf a few years ago?

Yeah but they had to get it installed very quickly for the start of the season, and in result it wasn't put in properly or efficiently.

Actually I seem to recall Pederson talking about doing precisely some time ago (at least for a portion of the seating that is).

Only in areas where they can start to charge MORE of a premium for seats. i.e. Club seating. It will never be done in the entire stadium.

The last time they put in new turf was just before the 1999 season. That was installed rather quickly, and was sort of a test-run since the field turf was a new product at that time. Hopefully this will last longer. I like the alternating dark green/light green pattern!

There are two reasons for the new turf:
1. It needed to be replaced due to age.
2. With the new offense passing the ball more, the crown (for drainage) on the field was too high. The old crown was 18", perfect for running the option down the line of scrimmage, but terrible for a quarterback trying to throw the out pattern. The new crown will be 8-9" and will make throwing the outs much easier. You can bet Callahan had something to say about this.

If you haven't seen pictures of the new turf, it's awesome.

The new turf looks good.

The story about the crown being too high, come on, where did you here that. You would think a QB would like to pass from a higher elevation, he could seee his players better. That seems like more of an NCAA requirement.

If your receiver is running toward the edge of the field then the defender would be on higher ground to. I can see where it would cause over throws as well. I can see the argument for it. The crown was very noticeable before.

This new turf reminds me of a watermelon. At least it isn't as ugly as the blue turf that Boise State plays on that even ducks and geese mistake for water.

Sorry, it is true. THe crown has been a point of discusion long before BD got here. It used to be an advantage, not any more with a passing game. Oaklahoma used to have a high crown too but cut it down a few years ago. Do a google search or take a look around the net and you will find much more than BBS material on it. It has been a topic on sports talk radio to.

Yeah, it is much harder to throw off the crown to a reciever who's running a 10-15 yard out. If you throw to a spot (on timing routes) the ball sails high. It creates a problem in that you have to compensate for the crown by throwing lower than what is natural. I don't think we can use this excuse to explain our passing game the past couple of years though.

That kind of came out of nowhere....

. The turf had to be replaced because of the poor job done putting it down origninally, as far as how it looks I think it stands out more and doesn't have that astro turf look, which in my opinion is good.

I could not believe that this ticket plan was the major headline on the front page of the Omaha World Herald the other day.

I realize I do not quite understand Big Red football mania and may need some coaching there.

Now I know the sports section will have a major piece on how the Big Red punt team has just set a record for the most punts placed between the 10 and 15 yard lines, but the sports section is where it should be.

But to have a football ticket plan as the most important item in our most significant media outlet strikes me as missing what else is important in Omaha and Nebraska.

Am I wrong!

I have lived here for 27 years after leaving Milwaukee and being Chicago-bred.

Please continue to school me on why our only local newspaper chooses this ticket plan as its major headline, front page story over other topics such as:

1, Downtown Omaha Condos: Too few, too many, or just the right amount?

Because they cater to the lowest common denominator, which will almost always be sports. This comes from a HUGE Husker fan (see you at Brewsky's on Q tonight for the VBall game), but I know when to turn it off.

Regardless of what you've heard, the newspaper's job is to sell newspapers. Be glad there's no NASCAR around here.

Keep in mind that maybe a decade or so ago the biggest issue in Omaha - according to voters in the mayoral election - was potholes. @#$%ing POTHOLES!

Actually, it's the Husker bashers who complain when they see our enthusiasm, rather than "turning it off!"

I wish the papaer would have buried the story so I would have a better chance at getting my tix!

Washington was a very talented and experienced team (I say was, because they lose almost all of their best players next season). NU had two very good seniors... but their strength is really still in their youth. I predict they'll get that wire to wire championship next season... and what better way to do it than with a finish in Omaha.
