I see that they're working on completing HWS Cleveland Boulevard to connect to Fort. Would love to know when the planned completion is; the West Papio Trail ends there, and I have to ride up Fort and then 168th to get to the lake.

Looking at the Omaha Master Plan, there were plans to connect 180th from Ida to Military/Rainwood. Does anyone know if that is still planned now that they plopped this lake in the way? It looks like it could still be done (i,e, 168th and Zorinsky) as the lake gets narrow to the north.

The DC Assessor's website shows possible ROW for 180th curving around the west side of the lake. It has an owner name of "DOUGLAS COUNTY ENGINEER". The bottom part of the red curved box is 180th and Ida, with State Street at the top of the screenshot.

Nice find! And if you look at the satellite view, you can clearly see the embankment for a bridge already in place. They presumably did this along with the filling of the lake, so it's been in the plans for a while now.

Speaking of this lake, and all of the newer ones, it always bugs me that they don't remove the trees prior to filling the lake. This makes it practically unusable for boating until after the several years it takes for them to rot away.

Is that standard procedure for every lake (Standing Bear, Cunningham, Zorinsky)? As the older lakes don't have trees poking up out of the water, is that just because they've been around long enough, or back then, did they bother to remove the trees? Walnut Creek, which opened in 1999, still has trees poking up out of the water. So if you're talking 20+ years for a tree to rot away, wouldn't they find it important to remove them prior to filling?

My question is for anybody old enough to remember, but were any of the older lakes like this when they first filled, or did they remove the trees first?

I could definitely buy that. But its still a pain. What's the point of a lake you cant confidently take a boat out on?

There are plenty of boats on these lakes. They're no wake lakes so you shouldn't be going fast enough to do any damage if you hit a branch anyways.

I'm not saying you can't boat on them, but the trees are a pain, and they keep me off those new lakes. Like you gotta tip-toe around and pay attention. Whereas on the older lakes, you can think about things other than trees.

Zorinsky definitely still had trees in it when it was built. I remember always seeing them driving over the lake.

The trail around the north half the lake is closed due to an active bald eagles nest. You can easily see the nest and the eagles from Ida street.

Ran into this a few weeks ago when I walked around the lake. I was surprised the whole north half of the trail was closed.

But you could see eagles in the trees.

One of my co-workers did the nest study so I was going to ask today at work but I ran out of time. I'm guessing the whole north half is closed just so its not a dead end on the trail, but I'm not sure. I'm guessing only that corner of the lake needed to close.

I'm also curious because I am about 99.5% sure I photographed an owl in that same nest last year.
