It's just the woke idiots forgetting the library is moving 5 blocks away. They really just saw they were tearing it down and couldn't do 30 seconds of research. I actually think it’s pretty healthy debate (until namecalling starts) on what to do with a valuable piece public property. Omahans have seen our fair share of buildings and land handed over to a few wealthy individuals for their gain.

It would be different if there wasnt a 300 million dollar public investment across the street...

Well, really closer to $400 million and 95% of that cost (for the entire riverfront redevelopment plan) is being paid through private philanthropy..

It seems as though Lund deleted the tweet after getting (when I last saw) over 700 replies without a single in favor of anything but a library.

There were some for it, myself included. Also, the 700 replies weren’t unique. It was a mob spamming it from what I could see. To be fair though, I didn’t read that much of it since it looked like a |expletive| post.

I still contend, although I know it’s an Uber popular take on the forum, I don’t think the old Civic Auditorium parcel is the best site for a new downtown library branch.. I’ve given my opinion previously as to why..it’s “okay” but not the best..

Something new, open and fresh..along our riverfront, close to our Luminarium Science Museum would be best. Best that’s me…

Also I wonder if the blowback from the main library move forced the mayor's hand and developers hand. 6 weeks came by quick.

Per the Nebraska Examiner piece-

“The mayor’s invitation to an 11 a.m. press conference on Wednesday said she would share a “pair of significant urban core development announcements.”

Business sources and several others in and around City Hall, who spoke on the condition they not be identified, would not specify how the streetcar would be funded. They said details would have to wait for the mayor’s announcement.

Mutual of Omaha — a corporate icon that’s been planted in midtown Omaha for decades — is poised to build a new headquarters where the city’s downtown public library stands, according to sources familiar with the project.

Mutual’s new building is expected to be a tower that could surpass the height of First National Bank, currently the tallest downtown building at 40 stories.”..

You know I'm a Civic advocate but I like the idea of the riverfront better than being locked into a lease at 14th and Jones. However, the riverfront is more of a entertainment/tourist district and I would hate to miss future development opportunities there over a civic library. I believe there are other good potential sites too but I'd hate to see the library still at 14th and Jones in 10 years.

The Streetcar will have to use Farnam. With all the jobs going in at UNMC over the next 10 years there will be a major need for more housing. I bet we see some cool new developments going in there.

Wow! That’s big news! I had a feeling MoO was the one. Just the way it all seemed to be happening so fast you could tell some corporate muscle was being flexed. I hope something equally good will happen with their old campus at Midtown along the lines of rehab/repurposing rather than outright demo and erasure of the most significant structures on the old campus.

The OWH has lost a lot of its talent since the reorganization.

I’ve been saying for several years this Riverfront Redevelopment Plan was going to be the game changing spark for our downtown core- this fantastic announcement tomorrow, I believe, will be the tip of the iceberg.. Truly, 5-7 years from now, we won’t recognize the Omaha urban core area…

I joined this forum when I was 15 always looking for the latest news on a skyscraper to pass First National and a streetcar system and both are finally being announced right when I'm about to turn 21...
Crazy stuff, Omaha is really about to take off on the momentum it's been building for years.

This is surprising, but alot needs to happen still and we’ve seen other projects get announced then later cancelled or downsized. BUT, if this becomes a reality it will push Omaha I believe into the top midsized city in the country. Hopefully it will be on the fast track and will move ahead quickly. Potentially HUGE for Omaha.

Very true, FNC and UP were both downsized. I'm a little more hopeful here with the chosen lot. It'll be interesting to see if the architectural influence is maintained...FNC referencing existing Mutual, etc.
