Does anyone know when the Hooters will start going up? I don't see any dirt work going on between Boot Barn and Alamo.

La Vista location to bring Hooters back to Metro

After a six-year absence, Hooters will be making a return to the metro area.

The restaurant chain is planning to build a location in western La Vista at 12710 Westport Parkway. Construction on the new building is expected to begin this spring with a completion date estimated for sometime in October or November.

The establishment was approved for a Class C liquor license during the March 5 La Vista City Council meeting.

This will be the first corporate owned Hooters franchise in Nebraska. The Hooters that was previously located near 125th Street and West Center Road was a franchise establishment.

“Our group bought them out six years ago, but we were unable to come to terms with the landlord,” said Mark Whittle, chief development officer for Hooters of America.

“We took some time to stabilize the operation, but we were definitely looking to get back in this area. Last year we started looking actively at additional sites that were suitable for growth and sales potential.”

The group also operates the Hooters in Council Bluffs, Iowa, as well as several locations in the Kansas City area and other parts of Kansas and Missouri.

Whittle said the La Vista location made sense for a variety of reasons, including its proximity to Cabelas.

“We have several locations that are near a Cabelas or Bass Pro Shop and they all do well,” he said. “We find we have similar customers in that people who like the outdoors like wings.

“We also loved the location near I-80 and that makes it more of a regional draw. You’ve also got a cinema (Alamo Drafthouse), a hotel (Embassy Suites) and a Costco so you’ve got places that generate a lot of activity.”

Whittle said while the menu at Hooters will look familiar, the building itself will have a different look and feel.

“It’s a little bit smaller from the previous Hooters,” he said. “It will seat about 200 people, including the patio area. It will have a more contemporary look than the older Hooters.”

Whittle said they expect to employ about four to six full-time employees and 60 to 70 part-time employees.

“It’s a high energy bar and a great environment for sports viewing,” Whittle said.

Hooters is opening today. After going there yesterday I really wish that it was a Tilted Kilt that was opening. When it comes to breastaurant's it's #1 Tilted Kilt, #2Twin Peaks and a distant #3 is Hooters.

Hooters is open odd hours for the time being. It doesn't open until 4PM. However, the one in Council Bluffs is open for lunch.

Agree with others--that's a bad location. I wonder if DJ's, Tanner's, Brewsky's, Good Life can make it work?

We went there once. Probably about 6 -8 months ago. Based on my one sample point they had a LOT more issues than location. The food and service were marginal at best. Was not busy, and based on my observations they were not short-staffed. The slow service was the icing on the cake and the one-time visit was enough.

Service and staffing were the biggest issues. We tried to go on a Sunday afternoon about 4PM and they were closed. A couple weeks later we stopped on a Friday night and they had a sign that they were closed because of staffing. That is when I knew it was only a matter of time.

The last time they were actually open we sat with empty drinks for almost 15 minutes with no bartender or staff around. I ended up leaving a $20 that hopefully covered 4 beers. I'm not sure if everyone quit or what happened.

I think the only hope for a restaurant/bar working in that spot is for the soccer fields getting developed and we know how that is going.

I dunno about the negativity on the location... Osaka seems to show that a good restaurant with great service will do really well! That place is great and in the same plaza and seems to always be busy, both in house and takeout.

And for what it's worth, we only went to Ozzy's a handful of times but it was enjoyable each time for us. Sad to lose them but hopefully something new will go in their place

I only ever went to Ozzy's for weekday lunches. Food was okay. Not great, not bad, but just average. Service was always friendly but inattentive and kitchen speeds were slow.

I said years ago that this was a bad idea. But, I don't really think it's location. Sarpy is simply flooded with too many examples of the same old tired sports bar cliche. You can't just throw some TV's up, serve burgers and wings, and expect to succeed anymore. People want more even in the suburbs.

Within a few miles, you had Ozzy's, Hooters (which probably killed them), Refs, Jerzees, Good Life, Buffalo Wild Wings, Addy's, etc. It's just overload.

Find a niche, do it well, but don't expect to win just by being lazy and doing the same thing we've had 100 times in the past.

Totally agree. Location is not to blame here -- Osaka is two doors down and is busy most of the time. Hooters (which I agree probably killed them off) is across the parking lot and usually busy.

Ozzy's was fine for what it was. Not bad, not great, just alright -- but there's a half dozen similar concepts within a mile or two who are doing basically the same thing, many of them better, so you're not going to succeed being just alright.

Something else that isn't a burgers/wings/pizza/25 TVs on the wall concept would probably do well there. I don't think the location is the problem.

It certainly feels like Sports Bars are getting over-saturated in Omaha. Every time a new one opens near where I live or work I glance at the menu just to be greeted with what is basically a copy of every sports bar menu. Burgers, Wings, Pizza, and 82 television!!! (oh, and a couple salads/wraps to keep the ladies happy) Then again, I do know some people that seem to eat at one sports bar or another most days of the week. So, perhaps the supply is just echoing the demand. Personally, I'm a little tired of the wing obsession.

Have you seen how many sports bars are within a quarter mile of Millard Ave & S? Addy's, Choo Choo, Bogie's, Pheasant... It's comical.

Addy's is the only sports bar that you listed. If anything Millard Ave is a Dive Bar area, Bogies, Choo Choo, Pheasant, Piccolo's, Sociable, Duck In, Brick Street, Blind Daves. They all have that small town feel that has not been updated in 20+ years.

Does anyone know what is being built next to The Embassy Suites in Southport on the open ground between the hotel and Southport Parkway street? Lots of dirt work and survey stakes in place the last couple of times I have been by there. Most recently yesterday.

I could see a Scooter's. There used to be a Scooter's Coffee Drive-Thru at the nearby Summer Kitchen Café where you could order Scooter's Coffee and SKC food, but they didn't renew their franchise. So, it's no longer a Scooter's and they just sell their own coffee. So, that leaves that area devoid of a Scooter's and Omaha abhors a Scooter's vacuum.

Not at the La Vista Summer Kitchen Café. It ceased being a Scooter's in September 2021. Though, as stated, the drive-thru is still there and you can still order coffee (and SKC food) but it's just not Scooter's Coffee anymore. They were always a weird Scooter's anyway. They wouldn't take Scooter's coupons or gift cards and never accepted the app either.

From what I hear, SKC grew weary of Scooter's Corp's silly ADD whims, procedures and promotions. A lot of the smaller franchisees feel the same way.

It's a strip mall with tenants not named yet. From Grow Omaha's email this week:

"Construction is just starting on a 12,000 sq. ft. retail strip near Southport Parkway & Giles Road in La Vista’s Southport area. The building will sit along the south side of an Embassy Suites hotel and will have to smaller retail buildings on either side of it."

Yes, and as I remember, their frozen yogurts were good. Summer Kitchen Cafe was just as good. Better than when it was in La Vista.

My wife was a Scooter's manager at that time, they wanted to know if we wanted to invest in the yogurt deal. We were illiquid at the moment so we passed. Good thing...
