Creighton University revealed a plan Tuesday to build a new $75 million health sciences facility at its downtown Omaha campus, with major funding from C.L. and Rachel Werner.

The building will house classrooms, a simulation center and other programs. It will stand south of Cuming Street and east of U.S. Highway 75 on what is now a faculty-staff parking lot. The building is scheduled for completion in fall 2023.

Creighton's health sciences and medical programs currently are in the Criss Complex near North 27th Plaza and Burt Street. The Criss Complex will get its own $10 renovation, so the total project cost is $85 million.

Isn't $75 Million plus $10 just $75,000,010 and not $85 Million ?

Creighton University breaks ground on $75 million health sciences center

The groundbreaking for Creighton University’s new CL Werner Center for Health Sciences Education on Wednesday may have been ceremonial, but university officials say the $75 million structure will have real impacts on the campus.

The five-story, 130,000-square-foot facility will serve as the new home of Creighton’s School of Medicine and as a hub for all of the university’s health sciences schools and colleges. The university seeks to bring together health care students from different disciplines to prepare them to work collaboratively in the field.

The construction of the new center, expected to open in fall 2023, also will result in shifting Creighton’s entire campus east of Highway 75. The university plans to sell property west of the highway now occupied by the Cardiac Center, the Boyne Building and the Bio-Information Center. The move will reduce the university’s footprint by 220,000 square feet, which is expected to save more than $700,000 a year.

The project also is expected to create 1,070 jobs during construction, according to an estimate provided by the university. It will have an overall impact of $3.2 billion on the local economy during the first 10 years.

I pulled the rendering. Looks like it emulates a lot of the other buildings on campus, but a nice bit of infill for the campus. Between this and the health sciences building, that part of campus off Cuming will be a lot nicer to drive by.

I've been meaning to ask - what did Creighton do with all of those solar panels that were over the lot on Cuming? They were installed to much fanfare only a couple of years back. Can't be done with their useful life yet. I'd assume they will reinstall somewhere, but haven't seen any announcements....

- In general, they will continue filling in empty lots they currently own rather than buying new land.
- Baseball/softball facilities to move to Cuming corridor and current facilities are to be replaced by a quad/greenspace.
- New library will go in the place of the dorm being torn down.

Creighton president: University projects are in line with plan for downtown Omaha's future

Kelsey Stewart An ambitious plan to bring the elevated lanes of Interstate 480 down to street level would help Creighton University’s campus become better integrated into downtown Omaha, the university’s president said Monday.

The Rev. Daniel Hendrickson said $250 million in improvement projects already are underway on campus. Those projects would complement the Greater Omaha Chamber’s urban core plan, which would breathe more life into Omaha’s midtown, downtown and riverfront areas.

In the chamber’s vision for improving the city’s urban core over the next 20 years, officials envision 30,000 more workers and 30,000 more residents in the area stretching from midtown Omaha through downtown and to the river’s edge in Council Bluffs.

Creighton’s campus sits roughly east of U.S. Highway 75, west of 16th Street, north of I-480 and south of Cuming Street, which is part of the area targeted by the chamber for its redevelopment plan.

Creighton officials already are working on improvements to campus. Projects that are underway or in the planning stages include a new health sciences facility, playing fields, a campus quad and a Jesuit residence. Those projects are being completed with $250 million in donor funding, Hendrickson said.

Here's my attempt to show what he's talking about. The future quad is where the baseball/softball fields are currently located, as well as a large surface lot. I couldn't see a rendering of the potential library, so that was cut out.

The university on Tuesday announced plans to build a 37,779-square-foot Jesuit Residence along 24th Street at the east end of the historic Jesuit Gardens on campus. The residence will house the university’s Jesuits in 29 bedrooms. The building also will include five guest rooms for visiting Jesuit scholars.

The building also will include a 1,015-square-foot chapel, a dining hall, a library and several spaces for spiritual activities. Students, faculty, staff and alumni will be able to access the building for Mass, spiritual counseling and other mission-based programs.

The university also will remove the 136-year-old Creighton Observatory, which has been closed for decades because of safety concerns. Portions of the observatory will be preserved and incorporated into a memorial structure in the Jesuit Gardens

Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, PhD, President of Creighton University, has been elected to a two-year term as Chair of the BIG EAST Conference Board of Directors. He will begin his term on June 30, 2022.

Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, PhD, President of Creighton University, has been elected to a two-year term as Chair of the BIG EAST Conference Board of Directors. He will begin his term on June 30, 2022. The Board of Directors is comprised of the presidents of the BIG EAST's 11 member institutions.

Fr. Hendrickson succeeds Rev. Peter M. Donohue, OSA, President of Villanova University, in the BIG EAST Chair role. Hendrickson's appointment was announced following the spring meeting of the board in New York on June 2.

Fr. Hendrickson has served since 2015 as Creighton's 25th President. He was elected to the Creighton Board of Trustees in 2013. He also serves on the Boards of Trustees at Boston College, Xavier University, and Jesuit Worldwide Learning based in Geneva, Switzerland.
