2024 Swim Trials
Apparently the 2024 swim trials is going to be held in Indianapolis per KETV.
It had been held in Omaha in 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2021.

Not surprising, wonder if they will give it the support that Omaha does.

Well, I'd say the bar has certainly been raised. Events like this can't come back if they don't leave.skinzfan23 wrote: Mon Mar 28, 2022 4:58 pm Not surprising, wonder if they will give it the support that Omaha does.

Re: 2024 Swim Trials
We were all given big hints this wouldn't return with MoO ending their sponsorship a while back. Good for Indy though. Next question is what big event can Omaha get to help replace the swim trials.Greg S wrote: Tue Mar 29, 2022 2:14 pm Hopefully everyone understood that this was going to happen eventually. As long as we keep curling?
And I'm still hoping we get MLS someday!

Re: 2024 Swim Trials
Zero surprise they left for Indy, I was surprised it came back in 2020/21.
It also wouldn't surprise me to see it back in Omaha someday.

The overlap of the swim trials almost became more of a burden than advantageous also imo.

That would depend on attendance in Indy. One thing that might diminish it is they have the Colts and Pacers, so how hungry are they for sports?MadMartin8 wrote: Tue Mar 29, 2022 10:07 pm Zero surprise they left for Indy, I was surprised it came back in 2020/21.

Omaha-area residents, businesses feel U.S. Olympic swim trials' move to Indianapolis 'bittersweet'
It was sad news Tuesday for swimming fans in Nebraska: Omaha will not be host to the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials - Swimming. Instead, Indianapolis will "get the gold," as USA Swimming announced that the swimming trials will take place at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Re: 2024 Swim Trials
I'll be the sour grapes here - I'm very comfortable with this flopping in Indianapolis. To me it's like the CWS - it's threatened to move from the city before as well. Let it. With the CWS, the NCAA would come crawling back after it gets half the attendance it does in Omaha. These aren't magnet events on their own - Omaha made them. The trials were in Indianapolis in 2000 and drew 122,000. It was 200,000 in Omaha in 2016.

2024 Olympic Swimming Trials coming to Indianapolis
Since Indianapolis last hosted the event at IU Natatorium in 2000, Omaha, Nebraska, has regularly staged the trials in its riverfront arena and convention center.

USA Swimming CEO Aims For U.S. Olympic Trials Attendance Record
SwimSwam
USA Swimming CEO, Tim Hinchey, drops in on the SwimSwam podcast to talk about 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials. Tim honors the past, noting the success in Omaha paved the way for the larger venue, Lucas Oil Stadium, in Indianapolis, and he addresses any concerns that the new venue might be too big. Tim has lead the governing body through some tough times, the pandemic being the most notable, and he feels it is time for swimming to grow. Tim’s bullish on the Indy venue, detailing it’s central location. 25% of USA Swimming’s registered swimmers and their families are within an eight hour drive to Indy, something the Omaha location did not deliver. Tim’s so bullish on the Indy location he is projecting an historic attendance record, at least for one night.
Interestingly, Tim goes back into U.S. Trials history, describing the move to Long Beach in 2004 and the crowd of nearly 10,000, and the fears - back then - of going to Omaha in 2008 with a capacity of nearly 15,000, which USA Swimming managed to sellout. Omaha did put USA Swimming on the map in many respects, certainly making the governing body’s event the envy of all Olympic sports orgs. Tim sees U.S. Olympic Trials as the greatest swim meet on earth, and he intends to continue that tradition.
Attendance records at swimming venues and the size of the crowds throughout history are somewhat murky. If you have any data on this topic, please share. Did the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics have 30,000 or even 40,000 in attendance? I found this footage of the 1932 Olympic swimming competition, and it doesn’t appear to be 30,000. What do you think? Swimming starts at 1:40 ---

Re: 2024 Swim Trials
Too early to tell but me thinks this could be step back for the event. This story from December doesn't sound that promising for Indy.
https://swimswam.com/2024-us-olympic-tr ... -2-months/
"But as we keep reminding everyone, what a 40% full venue (one already reduced in capacity by 40%) might lack in atmosphere, it will make up for in gross revenue: a dramatic increase in pricing for the 2024 Trials could make up the financial gap of fewer tickets being sold. 100 level seats are roughly 3x the cost in Indianapolis as they were in Omaha."

Re: 2024 Swim Trials
More than one of the comments stated that it should be moved back to Omaha. This is how I feel with the CWS. Sure, they could move it to a major league park, but it wouldn't have the same feel. Although sports have tended to be much more about money than ever before. It sounds like Indianapolis is ok with fewer ticket sales b/c the bottom line is still there with much higher ticket prices.
Lets hope they do come back to Omaha.
