Nebraska’s been lucky so far. It’s largely ducked the ugly intraparty feuding that’s consumed the GOP in Georgia, Arizona and elsewhere in the post-Trump era.
Donald Trump won big in Nebraska, one of the nation’s most rock-ribbed Republican states. But so did Sen. Ben Sasse, one of his fiercest critics, who pulled more votes statewide than the former president in November. The state party rebuked Sasse following his vote to impeach Trump, but it stopped short of taking the next step — censuring him. Other Republicans with moderately conservative profiles have fared well, too. Rep. Don Bacon, who supported Trump but criticized his rhetoric, out-performed Trump in his Omaha-based congressional district in November.
But if the state stands out as a petri dish of divergent strains of conservatism, the Republican primary for governor in 2022 is poised to test the limits of their peaceful co-existence.
The question in Nebraska — as it is in other heavily Republican swaths of the country — isn’t if a Republican must be supportive of Trump to win an open statewide office. They almost certainly must be. It’s whether just supporting Trump is good enough — or if, in the reddest of states in the new GOP, only the Trumpiest candidate can win.
The problem for Republicans, going forward, is the internal dissent within the party, and there's probably no better example of that than Senator Sasse's independent streak. Nebraska (to its credit), has always produced Senators who don't fear bucking the party line (i.e. Sasse, Hagel, Kerry, Nelson, Exon). The extreme Trump wing of the Party has managed to capture and control the leadership of most states' organizations, and they don't allow any deviation from their ideology, whatever that is. Should be an interesting battle.

A candidate that appeals to moderates is needed.
Kara Eastman was too far left to appeal to those centrist voters. I'm no huge Don Bacon fan, but as a centrist, he was the better option. Again, that's no compliment.
If only the Nebraska Democrats nominated someone so centrist he was practically a Republican, they would win easily - oh wait, we already had a Republican-lite in Ashford. Voters, sensibly, preferred the real thing to the diet version.
The fact is, it's extremely hard for Democrats to win the district as it's been drawn now - which was the whole point of the GOP drawing it that way. Lee Terry was a uniquely bad politician, Bacon is competent and could win the current district for decades, probably.
Whatever. None of this matters, and that was made clear when Fischer and Bacon "decided" not to run for Governor. No Demcorat can win statewide in NE right now (if ever again), and the people writing the checks for the GOP primaries (Ricketts, Herbster, et al) want the jobs for themselves.

I'll believe differently when I see differently.
I don’t know, but if the GOP continues to move in the direction of “the former guy” there might be a window opening up to let in a breath of fresh air from a moderate Democrat again.

’The type of leadership we need': Mayor Stothert endorses Lindstrom in GOP primary for Neb. Governor
Lindstrom, an Omaha state senator, said he rather have the endorsement of Mayor Jean Stothert, than the endorsement of Former President Trump, which opponent Charles Herbster received last year.

Coyote, I am confused as to why the Lindstrom story is under the Fortenberry story heading. Could you clarify?

Honestly, I’ll take Lindstrom, given the odds of electing any non-conservative is highly unlikely. At least he’s not a complete noodlehead. We’ve had an embarrassment of a governor for the past 8 years, and we don’t need someone looking to beat his lunacy.

Yeah, this is where my head is at. If Nebraska votes in a conservative (which is most likely), I'd rather it be someone like Lindstrom and not Herbster or Pillen or whatever tool needs to pose with a gun in their ads.
What?! Young people are not looking at Wyoming and South Dakota. There are fewer people in the entirety of Wyoming than there are in Douglas County and Wyoming's growth rate last decade was minimal at 2.3%.
It's a little short-sighted to only point to cost of living as what attracts young and educated people. You also need opportunity, culture, and services. People aren't leaving San Francisco or New York for "a lower cost of living" in places like Austin, Boise, and Denver because San Francisco and New York are moderately affordable cities while Austin, Boise, and Denver are cheap cities, they're leaving San Francisco and New York because they are extremely to prohibitively expensive for people in certain stages of life and Austin, Boise, and Denver are "only" moderately expensive while still having relatively similar opportunity, culture, and services. If New York and San Francisco cost the same as Austin, Boise, and Denver, young people would not be leaving New York and San Francisco. Cutting costs while ignoring what makes a city attractive to the young and educated isn't going to produce the desired outcome.

No no no young people only care about incremental tax relief for households making over $600,000 annually and critical race theory or whether the lady using the urinal at a restaurant they'll never visit has stand-up plumbing or not.
AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WHERE ARE WE GOING TO PARK

I do think people are under-estimating just how much young people want a Governor that isn't afraid to grope women and lie about it. Hopefully one of the candidates can step up.
When I spoke to former Omaha Mayor @HalDaub09 he condemned the well-sourced story by @asanderford
adding: "Maybe ask Sen. Slama what she was wearing. Was she nude? Was she wearing a one piece or two piece?"
I think that should be the last time we ever hear from Hal Daub ever again. This wasn't just a one time slip; he made similar comments to two other reporters this afternoon.
Cringe isn't even remotely strong enough of a reaction to statements like that.

Hate to say it, but the boys club of men in power in Omaha can be pretty ugly. I many of us on this forum have heard glimpses of it on various platforms, traditional and internet driven.

It’s really awful that he’s gone all the way off the deep end. Before this very stupid era of politics we’re in he always seemed so pragmatic
Hal has had a knack for making moronic comments throughout his political career, going all the way back to inviting high school students to a "kegger" with his first Congressional campaign.

Agree, and I'm a conservative. Also who GAF about what he thinks in the first place? He's been irrelevant for ten years at least.

If there’s one thing Omahans can pride ourselves on, it’s our lack of tolerance for idiotic politicians on either side of the spectrum. The rest of the state should take note.
Pilled says allegations of sexual assault against Herbster are 'incredibly alarming
Nebraska Republican gubernatorial candidate Jim Pillen said accusations of sexual assault against Charles Herbster were "incredibly alarming," in an interview with KETV NewsWatch 7 on Friday morning.
Greg Gonzalez came around to our house, and then I checked him out some more. Was already thinking of voting for him, and the fact that he was endorsed by Ernie Chambers sealed it for me personally. If Chambers has interacted and thinks he can be worked with, I think Gonzalez is a pretty solid choice. Wouldn't mind Hudson in a vacuum, but I feel like some turnover at the top of the Sheriff's department might not be a bad thing.

The way OPD’s Union bashes Gonzalez, in part because his wife is suing OPD for harassment, sealed my vote for Gonzalez. Just wild to me a OPD’s Union would bash both, Hudson & Gonzalez so aggressively. It’s disgusting imo

The OPD Union grip on city politics is unreal. True corruption in action unfortunately. I’m a big pro-union guy, but the power the police force has on the happenings at city hall (and even the greater county as seen here) needs to be publicized much more frequently and in depth.
