Let's play what if
A little what if game:
What if when Northern Natural Gas merged/acquired Houston Natural Gas it didn't have Ken Lay as head of the company and the headquarters would have stayed in Omaha?
What if First Data would have kept its headquarters in Omaha, and even acquired Fiserve?
What if Sitel and some of the others like it would have stayed in Omaha?
What if Conagra wouldn't have hired some snot nose who had a hard on for Chicago and stayed in Omaha?
What if Kiewit would have made Omaha the headquarters for Level (3)?
What if Mercedes and BMW would have built their factories in Omaha? How about if Micron would have built their chip plant in Omaha?
I know, longshots, and yes, it doesn't matter because none of them did stay, but still, what if? Anyone have any others?

Also, what if Omaha was the state capital and had the Flagship Univeristy of Nebraska.Bob from Omaha wrote: Wed May 11, 2022 11:09 pm A little what if game:

With everything mentioned, I'm guessing the Omaha would be over 2 million.

Jeffery Skilling never comes into a leadership role and his fraudulent accounting practices don't sink the company. They are a large local boring employer. Also Arthur Anderson never folds and has a sizeable office in town.

Aksarben Village looks more like the suburban style of the first couple buildings on that land.
What if Sitel and some of the others like it would have stayed in Omaha?
Don't know Sitel tbh.
What if Conagra wouldn't have hired some snot nose who had a hard on for Chicago and stayed in Omaha?
Their campus isn't being redeveloped and the parks project doesn't get proposed.
What if Kiewit would have made Omaha the headquarters for Level (3)?
Level 3 still gets acquired by CenturyLink (now Lumen) they move their HQ to Omaha from Monroe, LA when they consolidate.
What if Mercedes and BMW would have built their factories in Omaha? How about if Micron would have built their chip plant in Omaha?
Suburban development is filled in out to the outlet mall area.
I know, longshots, and yes, it doesn't matter because none of them did stay, but still, what if? Anyone have any others?
If these had happened when the Seattle Supersonics came up for sale an Omaha group buys them and they move here instead of OKC.
This is currently happening in this same alternate universe.

Re: Let's play what if
I thought of another one.
What if a new airport was actually built between Omaha & Lincoln? By now development would have grown out from that airport both ways and by now it probably would have been updated or replaced a couple of times. On the other hand, think of the possibilities of an airport with 3, 4, 5 times as much land.
I have no problem with Eppley and where it is. I'm just playing what if.

I believe if Omaha won out on the Mercedes Benz and BMW factory plants, among everything else that’s been mentioned, those 2 would have been BIG for the metro..
But I think out of them all, the single biggest happenstance..was the one that was taken away, literally thieved overnight..and that is the state Capital. Had Omaha maintained state Capital status, I contend instead of being the 1 million population metro we are just hitting today, we could add approximately 500,000 to that population number..
I dunno, maybe I’m off, far off with that thought. But my gut instinct tells me it’s not that far-fetched…

What if …..
What if the $6.5 billion in federal grant money sent to Douglas County in the past year and a half alone was actually used to build housing? (source https://taggs.hhs.gov/)
That would be approximately 64,415 Housing units produced with no mortgage. (At $100,000 each).
The federal funds being pumped into our local economy are truly staggering.

The city would have picked the "proposed corporate headquarters" project instead of Wall Street Tower in 2005-06?

I'm not trying to pour water on your idea but when you say "...with no mortgage..." you propose to just give over 64,000 houses away? To whom?U R my Helix wrote: Fri May 27, 2022 7:54 pm What if …..

Not really suggesting that at all. But if they were built, with a give back/mortgage of say $500/month it would create a 384,000,000 annual housing fund.Bob from Omaha wrote: Mon May 30, 2022 7:32 amI'm not trying to pour water on your idea but when you say "...with no mortgage..." you propose to just give over 64,000 houses away? Re: Let's play what if
What if I-29 ran through Nebraska instead of Iowa thus serving Omaha directly? Then Nebraska would have a major north-south interstate route and they'd have 2 interstate highways running through it like pretty much every other state, except Maine.
What if 72nd and 50th Streets were overpasses above I-80 instead of underpasses?
What if Dodge Street was 7 lanes (3 east, 3 west and a center turn lane) between 30th and 72nd Streets?
What if when the Giles/Harrison exit was built in the late 80's/early 90's, they went ahead and built and widened Giles to at least 108th? What if they extended Harry Andersen Avenue southeast all the way to Giles? What if they rerouted 132nd Street in the same manner they did with Harrison making it continuous and therefore passing over I-80, the railroad track and the creek? What if they rerouted the old Giles Road northwest next to the railroad track becoming Centech Road and then turned north up to Chandler Road? What if Chandler Road was extended all the way to 132nd? What if the old route of 132nd served as a connection to the new Centech Road? And what if the Giles Road that goes to 144th is rerouted a few feet southeast passing either over or under I-80?
What if Omaha had already been grown out to 204th Street by the late 70's/early 80's? Therefore, pretty much most of their main streets that were 2 lanes (1 in both directions) would already be 4 (2 in both directions).
What if Albertsons was still in Nebraska including Omaha and Lincoln?
What if 7-Eleven was also still in Nebraska? Again including Omaha and Lincoln.
What if all the McDonald's throughout Omaha still flew 3 flags outside their stores – The US flag, the Nebraska flag and the McDonald's flag?
What if Peony Park was located downtown? What if it had been built in the area where a big ugly train yard went in the 60's or 70's?
What if Westroads never built that new food hall and instead kept their old food court, The Grand Cafe, open by this time and still had Burger King and Arby's in it?
What if Crossroads was still standing today and wasn't such a largely dead mall? What if it was still bustling and the second floor wasn't sealed off and their food court was still open? What if their food court had McDonald's, Subway, A&W and a Raising Cane's? Along with other places of course like Sbarro's and Orange Julius?
What if both Crossroads and Oak View both had Macy's?
What if there was a Northroads Mall on 72nd Street just off I-680?
What if Abbott Drive was built as an east-west route back in the 70's as it approaches Downtown Omaha from the airport instead of rerouting it in the early 2000's? What if they split it into 2 one-way streets with westbound traffic going to Cuming Street and eastbound traffic going to Burt Street a block south?
What if there were more 50-60+ story towers built 30-40 years ago in Downtown Omaha?
What if Omaha had a bigger airport built 30-35 years ago and it was called Omaha International Airport?
What if Omaha had MLB, NFL and NBA teams?
What if the Omaha stations all had an "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" mantra? And because of it:
-KMTV still uses the "3" logo they first adopted in 1986 when they switched from NBC to CBS.
-KMTV also still calls their newscasts NewsCenter 3 today, but like KETV they include their call letters in their name thus making them KMTV NewsCenter 3?
-WOWT still calling their newscasts Action News but using their call letters in their name thus making them WOWT 6 Action News?
-KETV still using the same Circle 7 logo they first adopted in the early 80's, but they display it in yellow with blue inside? Still calling their newscasts KETV NewsWatch 7 like they already do?
-KXVO still using the same "15" logo they first used when signing on in 1995; A 15 on green squiggles?
-KPTM still using the same "42" logo they first used since singing on in 1986? But instead of displaying it in orange, they display it in white on an orange tile?
What if Jim Flowers never left KETV in 1992? And Ross Jernstrom never left KETV in 1994? Instead, both Jim and Ross stay at KETV until their retirements. Jim in 2016 and Ross in 2020?
What if Tom Bevacqua never left Omaha in 1993? Instead he stayed at KMTV all these years well into the 2010s and retired in 2020-21?

I think they should change the center lane of Dodge to a turn lane from 30th to 69th. It can be a real pain in the arse figuring out how to make your loop and not to mention a waste of time. And half of people are too chicken to use the middle lane, or just don't know how to use it anyway.

Back in the fall of 2005, the city received 2 RFP’s for the old UP, 1416 Dodge parcel- one was from Townsend and their proposed 32 story Wallstreet Condo Tower..The other was from an Omaha company called- America First Real Estate Group. They proposed a much more conservative and non skyline enhancing 14 story building- they also needed to secure a major business tenant for their proposed building..The lack of this, and the fact there has always been a handshake deal between the city and whoever developed the property, that a significant, skyline enhancing building rise on the parcel- Lead the city to select KC developer Townsend and their Wallstreet Condo Tower proposal..NEDodger wrote: Mon May 30, 2022 12:31 amHskrFanMike wrote: Sun May 29, 2022 10:44 pm What if ...
The city would have picked the "proposed corporate headquarters" project instead of Wall Street Tower in 2005-06?
I'm curious who that was to have been - TD Ameritrade?
The rest, unfortunately, is monumental failed history…

Ahh, right on. Completely understand going with the residential tower, but yeah......unfortunate that couldn't get off the ground.

Re: Let's play what if
Of course, if Jim Flowers had stayed at KETV all these years, that would've affected Bill Randby, too. What would've happened to him? Would he have just been a morning or weekend meteorologist at KETV? Or would he have joined WOWT and become their chief meteorologist instead? Julie Cornell would've also been affected as well. She's Bill's wife after all. She'd probably want to work at the same station as her husband.

I saw the infamous newscast where Carol Scott showed up in a halter top. The ENTIRE city was talking about it the next day.

Completely true statement. Locally, women started to break in to the Omaha television market as Anchors, Meteorologists and sports reporters in the mid 1970’s. Carol Scott was one of the first female weather casters in Omaha TV back then (I don’t think she was the first and I don’t believe she was/is a meteorologist- could be wrong on that though). In any case, she was definitely easy on the eyes and very popular with the young male populous, lol.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Wed Jun 01, 2022 8:36 pm I was 13 in 1975. Donna Meyer was first. Sho got poached from.channel 3 by channel 7. Carol Scott replaced her and was famous for her 3 dimensions (keeping it family friendly). We used to joke that she could stand in front of Wyoming and block out Des Moines.

Getting back to the original topic, what if I-80 had high mast lights posted at the 84th, 72nd, 60th and 42nd Street exits and the I-80/I-480/US 75 interchange, but still had traditional street lights posted in between those exits?

With the city getting ownership of that property back due to the land swap with Lanoha developing the Mutual tower, it’ll be interesting to see in the coming months what significant RFP’s will be proposed for the 1416 Dodge parcel. Significant development there has been long, long overdue…NEDodger wrote: Thu Jun 02, 2022 1:13 amOmaha Cowboy wrote: Thu Jun 02, 2022 12:17 amBack in the fall of 2005, the city received 2 RFP’s for the old UP, 1416 Dodge parcel- one was from Townsend and their proposed 32 story Wallstreet Condo Tower..The other was from an Omaha company called- America First Real Estate Group. Re: Let's play what if
Here's another what if: Rosenblatt Stadium isn't demolished. Instead, it's still there and the College World Series is still played there every year?
As for the other baseball stadium downtown, TD Ameritrade Park, now Charles Schwab Field, it's home to the Storm Chasers instead of Werner Park in Southwest Omaha? And also Creighton's baseball team plays there? At Schwab Field, that is. Kind of like how the Husker baseball team and the Saltdogs play at Haymarket Park in Lincoln? In the spring, the Husker baseball team plays there and in the summer, the Saltdogs play. What if Schwab Field did that? Hosted Creighton baseball in the spring (February to May), then the Storm Chasers during the summer (June to September)?
And also, in addition to the new baseball stadium opening in 2011, what if they opened a new football stadium across from Abbott Drive where the Nighthawks (Omaha's failed football team) played? What if they were still around today? And they were/are part of the USFL and played on either Saturday or Sunday in the spring along with the other USFL teams?

The answer to your “what if”, which trickles down to most all of your others- if Rosenblatt Stadium wasn’t demolished (and the downtown stadium not built), the CWS wouldn’t be playing exclusively every year in Omaha…mrsticka wrote: Fri Jun 17, 2022 2:47 am Here's another what if: Rosenblatt Stadium isn't demolished. Re: Let's play what if
Yeah, probably not. But the way I see it, 72nd is on a higher terrain than I-80. After the 84th Street exit, I-80 goes up a big hill to 72nd. And 50th is the same way. So that's why I asked that.TransitOriented wrote: Fri Jun 17, 2022 9:31 amI don't understand this one.
