NEBRASKA CITY, Nebraska — A cease-fire has been reached in a years-long fight between a farmer and a natural resources district over a hike-bike trail. The fight boils down to a disagreement over who should pay for fencing to separate the farmer’s land from the Steamboat Trace Trail. Otoe County farmer Bob Trail said he expected the Nemaha Natural Resources District to pay for the fence. NRD officials say they couldn’t do that for one farmer and not other landowners.
The fence fight gained urgency in April, after Nebraska City cyclist Chad Larson found the trail blocked. Larson hit his brakes about halfway down the trail, near the Nemaha County line, just before hitting a fence that straddled the trail. Larson emailed a photograph of the fence to the NRD, warning that a cyclist could get injured. “It was hard to see,” Larson said. “There was no warning.”
What an idiot. He’s lucky he didn’t cause someone to be seriously injured. All because he apparently decided he was entitled to having someone else pay to repair HIS fence.

A colleague’s 15 year old son was killed a few years ago because of a similar dispute between a property owner and a county government. The idiot property owner strung a metal cable across the bike path, and the kid, driving an ATV, was decapitated.

I watched the ‘Snack Shack’ movie referenced in this story on Friday. It’s available on Amazon Prime. The script and acting are.. fine. However because it takes place in Nebraska City and Omaha, the local references are top notch. It’s like they made the film purely for the enjoyment of Eastern Nebraskans. i also thought it was cool to watch a coming of age tale set where I and I imagine most of us came of age.
