Ground broken on sports complex that could eventually draw 1 million visitors
Elkhorn Athletic Association project seeks to attract regional/national tournaments, and provide better local fields

A youth sports organization based in Elkhorn broke ground Thursday on a multimillion-dollar, multi-sports complex that officials project will eventually draw more than 1 million visitors a year. “We’ll be the second-largest visitor attraction in the State of Nebraska when it’s fully operational,” said Bruce O’Neel, the executive director of the Elkhorn Athletic Association. That, he said, would rank it right behind Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo.

Near Valley

On Thursday, the association broke ground on the MD West ONE Sports Complex at 264th and Ida Streets near Valley. The first phase will include eight artificial turf baseball/softball fields, six synthetic turf soccer/football fields and a barrier-free field for kids with adaptive needs. More fields will be added later to the estimated $52 million project. The project is seeking to capitalize on the lucrative market for regional and national, youth sports tournaments — tournaments that are being held in places like Des Moines and Kansas City now, according to officials. “A lot of organizers want to put tournaments in Omaha, but we don’t have the right facilities,” said Mark Rath, director of sports for Visit Omaha. He said the 1 million estimate is valid for the Valley project.

Progress being made at site of Valley sports complex

The heavy equipment is on-site and work crews have been moving dirt preparing for phase one of the new Valley Sports Complex. The Elkhorn Athletic Association is making progress. Land outside of Valley along Highway 275 is being graded, and soon, athletic fields will spring up.

“We’re hoping to have six soccer fields up by the fall of this year, and then a quad of baseball/softball fields that will be prepared for the spring of 2024,” said executive director Bruce O’Neel. “We’ve had really good luck with the weather so far holding off on rain so we can get some work done.” Future phases of development will include multi-purpose fields and more than a half-dozen additional baseball/softball fields, walking trails, and playground areas.

Exactly. So I bet Yates is not actually fuming over this and probably doesn't even care about it.

Seems like every community in the metro is building some massive youth sports complex. I know I'm not looking forward to the tax revenue black hole coming to Bennington, where we desperately need commercial development (not to speak of a grocery store).
Shoot for the Moon... if you miss, you'll land among the stars.
