Large sports complex coming to Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - A new baseball and softball complex is coming to the Capital City. The City of Lincoln, along with Nebraska Wesleyan University, the Lincoln Convention and Visitors Bureau, and other community partners made the announcement on Wednesday morning about the The new complex, which will feature eight turf fields, will go near Oak Lake Park on the southeast side of N. 1st and Cornhusker Highway. Included will be six youth fields, one of which will be the new home of Homer’s Heroes, and two championship fields. The championship fields will be the new home fields for the Nebraska Wesleyan baseball and softball programs. The outfields of the youth fields will also be used for flag football, soccer, lacrosse, and other sports. “There is a dire need to expand our youth sports facilities and provide a destination for more people than ever before,” Jeff Maul, Executive Director of the Lincoln Convention and Visitors Bureau said. “LYC is designed to be a space for players of all backgrounds and abilities to come together and play.” The facility will also include a playground and parking for 750 vehicles. Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2023 and be completed in Fall 2024.

LINCOLN - A nearly two decade old plan to make the capital city a major youth sports destination is taking a significant step forward.

LINCOLN - A nearly two decade old plan to make the capital city a major youth sports destination is taking a significant step forward. Community leaders announced Wednesday morning that construction of the Lincoln Youth Complex is set to begin in the spring of 2023. The more than $20 million dollar project, which is being privately and publicly funded, will be built just north of Oak Lake, near the intersection of North 1st Street and Cornhusker Highway. The complex will include eight turfed softball/baseball fields and will have parking for more than 750 vehicles. Executive Director of the Lincoln Convention and Visitors Bureau, Jeff Maul, says the complex is expected to bring 100,000 new visitors and $9 million dollars to the city of Lincoln in its first year.

"We're doing great things for youth. We're providing opportunities for youth that otherwise haven't had the opportunity to play on a team or be in an organized sport. But on a bigger picture, you take a look at the economic impact on top of the positive impact, the dollars that are coming into the community. This will be a special facility, unlike anything that Lincoln's ever had." The complex will also include programs for underprivileged, as well as mentally and physically challenged youth. Private donors of the project include former Husker baseball standouts, and World Series Champions, Darin Erstad and Alex Gordon. "The big thing is [it's] a non-profit right. We're not sitting here trying to make money off of kids," Erstad shared. "This is a thing to develop kids, and give them opportunities. When you start talking about that stuff, people go 'Oh, this is real.' This is what we're here for. It's not a joke. We are here for development." The complex will also be the new home of the Nebraska Wesleyan University baseball and softball programs. Completion of the Lincoln Youth Complex is planned for the late fall of 2024

Lincoln City Councilors approve lease for Lincoln Youth Complex

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) -A major hurdle has been cleared for a new college and youth baseball and softball complex to come to Lincoln. In a 4-to-0 vote, Lincoln City Councilors approved a 35-year lease for the Lincoln Youth Complex. The $27 million project will be located near 1st Street and Cornhusker Highway. It’ll have eight turf fields, used in part by the Nebraska Wesleyan softball and baseball teams, and for youth tournaments. There’s no timeline when construction could start, but developers have previously said they’d like to get going as soon as possible.

Lincoln breaks ground on Sandhills Global Youth Complex

LINCOLN, Neb - Nebraska’s capital city took the first step in a project aimed to help future generations. On Tuesday morning, city officials and those from Sampson Construction, Sandhills Global and other entities broke ground on the Sandhills Global Youth Complex, a new set of baseball and softball diamonds just outside of downtown Lincoln. Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird called it an exciting day for the city, thanking the area businesses who supported the projects efforts.
