Restaurant Recommendations for out of town guest

I recently went to Jamaica and on the flight back to Omaha, I sat next to a national sales rep that is helping set up the new Floor and Decor store. He is in town for 2 days and I mentioned some places for him to try.

Yesterday he went to the Drover and loved it.

But my question is what other local place would be good to meet up to show Omaha to him:

I thought of Crescent Moon to have a Reuben, but any other suggestions (maybe Gorat's or Johnny's in S. Omaha)

Is the goal to hit up a classic or to hit up a hot new restaurant?

Either one would be fine, but he is from the south and travels all over the country, so probably not a chain place that has a lot of locations.

I would hit one of the non steak places. BlueFly Asian and Pan Asian terrace would be good options for Asian food. Sushi has bumped up with Umami.

There is only one authentic Omaha Italian Steakhouse left, and that is Cascio’s..

Their steaks are still very good, and the pasta dishes, especially the Lasagna are excellent. The fried ravioli is a must have appetizer. The whiskey Ribeye for the steak option is stellar..Mostaccioli pasta with Italian gravy as a side? Sign me up..

I’d actually agree with Ika and Gather as good places to go, but not to wow an out of town guest.

And I’ll stand by my statement that 97% of the food recommendations on here are ignorable. Maybe trending to 96 now.

Johnny’s has certainly been around, forever.. But I’d fall short of calling it an authentic old school Italian Omaha steakhouse experience a la any of the old Caniglia’s family restaurants, Marchio’s Piccolo Pete’s, Angie’s etc.. But that’s my opinion as an Italian growing up in Omaha.. For the record, I’ve always had a good meal at Johnny’s.. Several of my Italian contemporaries would probably disagree with my opinion here..and they’d also include Gorat’s in the mix as well..

To each their own..

Nice article. I remember them all. They forgot to include Spare Time and Little Franks, both in Little Italy, Trovato’s, and probably the nicest 2 of them all, Sam’s (Bonafatti’s), and Angelo’s (DiGiaccimo’s) on 72nd. I probably missed a few.

That list brought back more than a few memories of my youth. My family were regular customers of several of those places, including Mr. C’s (where you would regularly wait 45 minutes for a table on a Saturday night), Marchio’s (where I had a pitcher of ice water poured in my lap because I was being a smart a$$), the Original Caniglia’s (the wait staff could be very pithy), and the Venice Inn (perhaps my favorite of all of the listed restaurants). Back in the 1970s and 1980s Omaha didn’t have much variety in terms of restaurant cuisine. Mostly steak, fried chicken or pizza/Americanized Italian. Times have certainly changed.
