Rose Theatre
The Rose Theatre is planning to build an addition south of the theatre. The details (and illustrations) are found on the Alley Poyner website
Nearly 30 years after the original renovation, APMA is once again working with The Rose Theater on a master planning effort that aims to project future opportunities and needs 10 years out. The Plan will inventory existing conditions including space programming, building condition, acoustics, lighting, A/V, and MEP systems. Spaces for consideration to be added include two new classrooms, a black box stage with seating for 150, a green room, changing rooms with restrooms, and a full electrified grid, lobby/queuing space, new scene shop, and lighting lab.

Taking out the Jensen Tire for a 2 story addition. Net win for density. Big win for downtown oil change business for Firestone across the street to the south ha.

Excited they're making these improvements. However, this design is so incredibly bland it almost makes me sad to see this proposed. I don't like being that guy that complains about renderings but this isn't some 4 over 1 multi-family building that we can expect to fall in line with bland or overdone design trends. This is as close as it gets to something being a perfect kind of project to design an addition that has some serious depth and character to it.

Being a children's theater I doubt they really have the budget for anything too fancy.anonono wrote: Tue Oct 18, 2022 10:05 pm Excited they're making these improvements. Re: Rose Theatre
Probably true about the budget, but it would be nice if it blended in a little better with the Rose or was something that stuck out (although they may not want it to deter from the theater itself)

Re: Rose Theatre
It's a fine addition. Limited budget, increased construction costs and interest rates may affect design of these type of projects. Not being critical of what they went for, but if I was in charge, I would make the building 4 stories to reduce the foot print and sell the remaining land or work with a developer to create additional commercial or residential space, or save it for future expansions. I could see them needed a bigger footprint though for practice or performance space, so I get the low rise building.

I just want to see us build more like we would might have 100 years ago. Add 2 stories of for sale condos above the expansion... It's not the hottest block downtown or anything but you could do it with very little risk I feel like.

In short order this will be viewed as an opportunity lost.
