Nebraska-based online retailer Spreetail is opening shop in downtown Austin, with plans to dozens of workers in the next year.
The company, based in Lincoln, Neb., sells home and garden products online, from vacuum cleaners and blenders to lawnmowers and leaf blowers.
Spreetail aims to hire 100 employees in Austin in the first year and expects additional growth beyond that, said CEO Brett Thome.
Their office is right in the heart of DT Austin. The company is hiring in Austin for positions in engineering, product management, marketing, merchandising and human resources.
Spreetail has leased 21,000 square feet in the James H. Robertson building at 416 Congress Ave., which it plans to occupy in late 2018. In the meantime, the company is operating out of the WeWork space on Barton Springs Road.
Founded in 2006, Spreetail is self-funded and currently has about 400 employees across offices in Lincoln and Omaha, Neb., and fulfillment centers in Georgia, Indiana, Nebraska, Nevada and Pennsylvania.
During the first half of 2018, Spreetail has added 172 employees, opened its fifth fulfillment center, announced an expansion into Omaha and increased its Lincoln headquarters.

Spreetail is downsizing it's e commerce/private brand sales business to focus on its fulfillment and logistics side. Most of the 100 or so jobs cut were in Austin, but Lincoln had 22 that lost their jobs.

When world shifted to online shopping, Lincoln’s online super-seller was ready
It looks like Spreetail's refocusing on fulfillment and logistics paid off. They have average 50% annual growth and they hit 90% in 2020 due to how pandemic change consumer habits.

I noticed something was up on LinkedIn when a lot of people I am connected with that work at Spreetail in Omaha started posting last week about leaving there. Here's the official word:

A lot of companies are seeing a contraction in their artificial growth that occurred during peak pandemic.

Should we rename this thread from "Spreetail expansion" to "Spreetail contraction?"

E-Commerce Logistics Firm Spreetail Lands Large $208M Raise
Chris Metinko
Nebraska is not known for large funding announcements, but that did not hinder Spreetail from securing some serious funding.
The Lincoln-based e-commerce logistics and channel management company closed a $208 million funding round, which the company said “was supported by McCarthy Capital, internal management, and other investors.”
Founded in 2006, the fresh round is the company’s first outside investment, per Crunchbase data.
Spreetail serves more than 500 brands, helping them push their e-commerce sales — through analytics, insights and logistics — on large platforms such as Amazon, Walmart.com and other sites.
Funding to so-called “Amazon aggregator startups” has dropped since the highs of 2020-21, when online retail was hitting new all-time levels due to pandemic lockdowns and consumers relying more on delivered goods.
“Many brands, aggregators, and agencies are heavily leveraged moving into 2023,” said CEO, Brett Thome in a release. “We have read the writing on the wall around post-pandemic shifts in consumer behavior combined with inflationary concerns and have repositioned Spreetail to increase our investment into our brand partnerships, our technology, and our organization this year.”
Spreetail said it reached $1 billion in revenue in 2021.
However, in October it was reported the company had laid off a “substantial number” of what was believed to be an 800-person workforce.
