FORMER LEOPARD LANES BELLEVUE BOWLING CENTER PURCHASED, WILL RE-OPEN WITH NEW OWNER AND NEW LOOK

The closed former Leopard Lanes Bowling Center located at 601 Chateau Drive in Bellevue has been purchased by a local area businessman and will re-open after renovations which will begin immediately. Steve Kucirek – Omaha native, US Navy Veteran, and local Bellevue businessman has purchased the building and property where the former Leopard Lanes operated – just east of Fort Crook Road and Harvell Drive in Bellevue. The former Leopard Lanes closed to the public in 2020. Kucirek plans to re-brand and renovate the former bowling center to create a new entertainment destination anchored by new modern bowling facilities for the Bellevue and Sarpy County area. The facility will include 22 traditional bowling lanes for leagues, tournaments, and open bowling. However, the facility will also feature a separate 8 lane “private bowling suite” for special events, groups, corporate meetings, or parties.

I’m just curious, does anyone here bowl, or belong to a league? I haven’t been since college, but I remember when it was a huge deal. My parents both belonged to a league. It’s interesting, but where I live now, the Asian immigrant community is keeping the sport alive, and the few allys left open, especially among Philipinos and the Vietnamese. I think it’s a cool pastime. Hope it makes a comeback.

I've never belonged to a league, but I like bowling. I used to go often enough as a kid that I had my own shoes and my own ball. That's probably my biggest barrier to doing it again is the shoe rental and not having a personal ball, and not knowing anybody that would like actually try to be competitive.

I haven't been bowling for years now, but last time I went with any regularity, I could spin it pretty good for a Joe Schmo. I'm that way with billiards as well. I got quite good at that, but also haven't played much for years. Now my game is darts and its the best cause I don't have to leave my house to play it, and the equipment is very little cost. And of course, I love disc golf and do that weekly. Thing I like about darts and disc golf is you don't pay to play.

I used to bowl in 2 different leagues about 10 years ago. I still have quite a few friends who bowl and I would like bowl again and may after my kids get a little older. The bowling alleys definitely make their money from the leagues, especially since it is on a regular basis.

I am glad to see that they are renovating the ones in Bellevue since they are closest to my house.

I looked into the organization that bought The Mark and the other bowling alley. Apparently the shift from focusing on bowling leagues to recreational bowling by that organization is a big deal in the bowling world. Essentially, they were/are, purportedly, purposely killing bowling leagues by their businesses practices. Simply put recreational bowling is more profitable. Whether it's a cultural shift or businesses focusing on recreational bowling, bowling leagues are passe for the most part. However, I think a lot of people still bowl for recreation. It's an easy thing to just go out and do with friends or family. And it's kid friendly. I think the bowling alleys that are really thriving, like the Mark, incorporate all the other entertainment options, because they are relatively simple add-ons. All this to say, I have bowled at least a couple times a year for business or personal recreation over the last few years. We've been mostly to the Mark and they have always been pretty busy when I've been there.

Thing I don't really care for about bowling now, as an adult, is its like always a thing to do while going out on a weekend night. Everybody getting drunk playing in the dark. What I'd be looking for now that I've settled down quite a bit would be a group, or even just another friendly competitor that would go for a quick three game set in the afternoon. Only take like an hour or so. But at any rate, it was $15 for 3 games. Now it looks like $33 per hour. Assuming you'd get about 3 games per hour between two people, that's still a wash. More than I'd want to pay with any regularity. Now if I had some lanes in my house, all bets are off haha.

Um, back in the Jurassic era when I was in high school, it was 25 cents a game on the weekdays and 35 on the weekends.😵‍💫

My band played some "Rock N Bowls" around Omaha when I was in high school... Kelley's Hilltop, Ranch Bowl, a few others.

I was also once on a Jr Traveling Classic League in high school as well. We would basically bowl at a different alley every weekend throughout the season, which was actually a lot of fun. West Lanes, Western Bowl, Center Lanes (on top of the Center Mall), King Louie Rose Bowl and even at Chops by the zoo and some dump alley in the basement of a church somewhere. As a matter of fact they had too few of lanes for our entire league to bowl at the same time so it had to be staggered on those weekends. They used to say they used bug spray as the oil on the church lanes because they straight up sucked.

Someone mentioned having a lane in their house - always thought would be the most amazing thing ever. I wanted to see inside Weatherspoon's house in Regency as a kid because everyone knew he had 2 lanes. Then some richie bought his house, started in on fire twice (rumors were they were very "suspect" during renovations), and then sold that off to the guy that owned Richman Gordmans. He tore it down and built a big square box that looks like an office building, IMO.

Anyway, that was off topic, but anyway I do miss bowling - one of those things that basically has disappeared and can't seem to work. Western Bowl is the only set of lanes west of 72nd that I can think of that still survives (not counting The Mark or Sempeck's... whatever it's currently called).

A quick Google Maps search yields The Mark, Maplewood Lanes, Mockingbird Lanes, Papio Bowl, Scorz in Ralston, and Chop's, and West Lanes... That's really not a lot of bowling alleys for this many people. Its no wonder they are all so busy on weekend nights.

West Lanes and Maplewood Lanes were my places as a kid.

Bowling was never an activity people I grew up or socialized with ever seemed to engage in. I’ve bowled only a few times in my life, and I always had fun embarrassing myself, but I never minded because everyone seemed half drunk. I barely drink and so the booze end of it never appealed to me.
Does anyone on here recall the old KETV Sunday show “Strike it Lucky at the Rose Bowl”? I think it aired in the 1960s and 70s. Mike May was the host if my memory serves.

There was a statistic in an article several years ago explaining why so many bowling alleys were closing down. There was some astonishingly large percentage of adults in their 30s that were members of a bowling league in the 1970s. That number has tanked hardcore. For me, bowling is like miniature golf. The people who take it seriously ruin it for the people who don't and vice-versa.

I wouldn't put it that way. They don't have professional mini golf... Or do they? :sly: Joking. But it has to take serious practice and talent to do the things that professional bowlers do.

I take all my games half serious. I want to play the best I can within my means (such as how much time I can put into them), but I'm not gonna take it so serious as to get mad like I'm making money off them. Darts, Bowling, Disc golf, they all have their constituents that take it way more serious than what is warranted.

But yeah, I get what you're saying, playing any game with someone who's taking it way too seriously is about the same as playing with someone who isn't even trying. You have to have some level of competition.

Bowling on the Brink as Construction Continues Inside The Alley

Let’s begin with the answer to one of the most asked questions in Bellevue since last October, when it was revealed that the former Leopard Lanes bowling alley had been purchased by Steve Kucirek – who had big plans to both renovate and innovate the existing location. Demolition and renovation are coming along quicker than expected. Kucirek is very hopeful that The Alley will be ready for bowling by the end of May or the beginning of June. They will begin taking applications soon and, when everything is fully up and running, they envision 30-40 people working at The Alley.

Kucriek is not a professional bowler, but he has bowled throughout his life. He grew up in Millard and after graduating high school, he served in the US Navy for over ten years. Kucirek was a nuclear electrician and worked on nuclear reactors on aircraft carriers and submarine platforms. After completing his service in the Navy, Kucirek attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he earned a Master’s degree in finance. While enrolled at UNL, he started working for West Gate Bank in Lincoln, and that eventually led him to Bellevue, where he is the Residential Mortgage Loan Officer for the West Gate Bank branch near 10th and Cornhusker.

Kucirek took some time to discuss the future of the former Leopard Lanes, now called The Alley – including the new look, all brand new equipment, the private bowling area, Frank’s Pizza, party rooms, axe-throwing, an arcade, and other amenities.

Yes, it's old school Bellevue. Middle-aged people can remember bowling there as kids. So, I would say most Bellevue residents can tell you exactly where it's at. Now, whether or not they show up is another thing...

Bowling alleys are their own creatures. They exist to fill a certain niche and you don't necessarily need "visibility" if they are properly run. It's always going to be a now somewhat fringe enterprise that's been in decline for years, but I certainly wouldn't call papio bowl or Scorz in visible areas either and they continue to survive. Now, when you start adding all sorts of other things and have to have a huge staff....you might well need more visibility. Here's hoping they don't outkick their coverage on trying to be an entertainment destination vs. just a bowling alley.

That was exactly my thinking. Family Fun Center did as well as they did for many years mainly due to their location at 72 & Dodge. When they moved to 108th @ M they lost their visibility, and we all know the rest of that story.

Hey all, I appreciate some of the feedback here. Definitely some good topics worth discussing.

It is my goal to be more than just a bowling alley... however, bowling is going to be a major part of what we do. Are we going to have some additional items to promote family fun? Of course... but, as is stated above... we want to ensure that we don't spread ourselves so thin that we can't be amazing at what we do.

In terms of visibility, the alley is in a fantastic location. Not too far from I-75, and directly across from Bellevue University. The property's rather large parking lot is also plenty big enough to serve a full house. Based on the feedback we have received, I am fairly confident that just about everyone in Bellevue knows where the old Leopard Lanes is at.

I hope to have the opportunity to serve you all after we open. :)

I think you're well-placed by taking over a bowling alley that's been in that location for decades. It's not like Bellevue ever had a wide selection of bowling alleys. So, if you're in Bellevue and think bowling, then Leopard Lanes is what comes to mind and odds are you already know precisely where it's at. The only other option is Peacekeeper Lanes on Offutt AFB and not everyone has access to it.

I also think that the last 25 years have seen enough bowling alley closures that what's left are positioned nicely. The market is no longer oversaturated with bowling alleys for a shrinking clientele. The few that are left are now sort of a niche attraction with a faithful following that will seek them out.

I used to work at Bellevue Data Communications which was across the street (across Harvell Drive) from Leopard Lanes and we'd wander over there to grab lunch sometimes. I also bowled there as a kid in the 1980s. So, I'm happy to see the place have a second life. It's very nostalgic for me.

I live in Bellevue and will definitely be frequenting your establishment. I honestly don't think there is a visibility issue at all, especially compared to similar facilities that I mentioned above...and, Bellevue is somewhat starved for entertainment options. I only see this as a positive.

Those that think there are visibility issues with the location are probably those who don't live in Bellevue and would be averse to that part of the metro no matter what.

Sounds like a unique destination and those can tend to do well wherever they are when run well. Excited for the opening.

I appreciate this kind of feedback - it gives me something to work on and accomplish. We have already launched our Facebook page, and will be soon launching our website. I intend to modernize the facility's street/marquee sign as well as perform some reasonable marketing to ensure that Omaha knows of our offerings. I truly hope that everyone will be pleased by what we hope to accomplish.

Those that think there are visibility issues with the location are probably those who don't live in Bellevue and would be averse to that part of the metro no matter what.
I’ve spent quite a lot of time in Bellevue between work, family and friends, and even I didn’t know it was there until someone took me there. Just giving my two cents as someone who loves to bowl.
Happy to help in any way I can!

I imagine there’s not much height allowance, but a three-sided sign that pokes up just over the hills would be seen from everywhere!

Looks like the tentative opening date for The Alley is the end of September 2023.

We are actually going to be a bit more delayed than that due to some delays with the equipment. The renovations, however, are proceeding extremely quickly!

Looks like The Alley opened mid-December 2023.

The bowling alley isn't open yet. Just the ax throwing and food at this time. They posted on Facebook at the beginning of March that they were anticipating to be testing pin machines over the next 4-6 weeks and were going to start discussing fall leagues. Sounds like they should be opening the lanes fairly soon based on that timeframe.

Is this place fully open yet?

Yes, Leopard Lanes is fully reopened as The Alley. My brother's family just went bowling there this last Tuesday.

The Alley, formerly Leopard Lanes, is not 'fully' re-opened. The Alley has 8 lanes of axe throwing, the full service kitchen and bar, arcades (free arcades and arcade games), party room availability, and other amenities. However, only about 10 of their 32 lanes are open and available.

They are hoping to get up to at least 24 lanes within the next two weeks - just waiting on some additional parts to come in.
