Last time I was in Minnesota, when there was a construction project on rural interstate, they placed the merge point in the middle of the two lanes and instructed drivers to zipper merge there and not sooner. It took the perception of cutting in line out of it and essentially forced everyone to comply.
That's not a bad idea. At least it would eliminate the defensiveness you get from people that are in the through lane. Both lanes end, so you can't rightfully feel like you're defending "your" spot. But I think that would probably take an extra 300ft ahead of the construction area.
I just think, in my situation, it was funny how mad the person got. I mean, yeah, make no mistake, the move I made was aggressive, but in no way was it unsafe, or put anybody in danger. The whole left lane was stopped, (probably a good 30+ cars) and I was moving at maybe 3 miles per hour. I just wedged myself in. Otherwise, I was going to be hung out to dry. Apologies to the person I "cut", wherever you are, but there's no reason to get mad about it other than ego. They honked at me and continued to drive like they wanted to wipe me out for 1/2 mile, until they had a chance to pass me. And might I add, when they passed me, they didn't have the balls to look at me.
So to me, I think its all ego. Not politeness. You do what I "did" to someone who waited in that line for probably 5 minutes, and they instantly snap. And I get it, I've waited my fair share of time in lines, but why wait when you don't have to? I even audibly said "Take notes bitches!" as I passed those 20 or so cars. Word has it, those poor bastards are still stuck in line.
