In my opinion, there needs to be some sort of throughfare to support commerce in every section of town. 13th goes straight into Downtown and is an important feeder to support everything that goes on Downtown... They dieted Park Ave, 24th, 16th, and 10th never was a big one. There needs to be something to work with.

The argument that 13th street needs to remain a thoroughfare for trucks/commerce is nonsense. There's literally 7 or 8 other ways to get commerce into downtown from 80/480/29 that don't take 2 extra minutes of driving.

I also couldn't tell you the last time I saw an actual "truck" on 13th between downtown and Vinton.

Might be time to start setting trash on fire in the street. I mean a "road diet pilot program".

Yeah I'm referring specifically to 18 wheelers here.

The reality is that stretch of 13th is not the crazy commerce thoroughfare the people in charge seem to think it is. There's no major employer on it other than the USPS. Are there "trucks" there? Sure. There's trucks everywhere. Are there enough trucks to warrant it being a NINTH truck route into or out of downtown? Laughably, no, not even close.

Although I suppose conceding a prime urban development corridor to the 10 hours a week that might constitute rush hour is prob the most on-brand Omaha thing you could do there. Why would we encourage another Benson or Blackstone or Old Market-esque district? All that's going to do is attract young people who don't even care about tax breaks for rich people.

And yes, I would also love to see an urban walking district in Omaha (or more), minimally close off streets for vehicles during certain hours. The Old Market and Benson are 2 perfect spots for this.

Just inbound into downtown, not necessarily the post office:

Northbound 480 @ Martha or @ Leavenworth or @ Harney or eastbound @ 20th/Capitol or @ 14th or westbound 480 @ 14th or @ Dodge or southbound 75 @ 24th....

That's eight routes directly from the interstate into downtown, and that doesn't include Cuming/Hwy 64 or the |expletive| show that is 11th street from the north into the Millwork Commons area.

Taper 13th from about Vinton down to 2 lanes plus turning at Center, give or take. Angled parking from center to downtown/the train bridge between pacifc and Leavenworth. Oh noes trucks have to go 25 mph instead of 50 for like eight whole blocks I hope no one effing dies while waiting in traffic for 30 extra seconds, or use one of the eight other routes.

Also |expletive| the post office. It can move someplace else and give up that crazy prime real estate.

The Prauge Hotel Apartments at 1402 S 13th Street has long held a visibly prominent location the Little Bohemia neighborhood. Although it has only about 11 units along with 1st floor retail space it has a spunky facebook page that encapsulates many of the local happenings around the area since renovations began around the area in 2018. Great job on making it a neighborhood page! Re-leasing was complete in February 2019. The building has studios and one-bedroom apartments that are still affordable despite the renovations. Recent listings show studios are $575 and one bedrooms $675. With all the pandemic news for the past two years the happenings in this area might have been overlooked. The opening of the new 112-unit Little Bohemia apartment building (12th & William) a block away is going to give this area another growth spurt. Some of the survivors of the pandemic revitalization in this area include:

The Infusion Little Bohemia Beer Hall, soldering on despite its opening during the pandemic. 1406 S 13th St. This location no longer no longer has a kitchen but has teamed up monthly with Eddis’s Catering to do Czech Dinners. (the former Bohemian Café)

At first I thought it was UNMC, but then it wasn't. And the location wouldn't be right for that view of UNMC either...

477 sq foot studio. That's huge for a studio. I wonder why they didn't make that into a 1 bedroom? Their 1 bedroom layout is such a space waster too. Oh well, at least they're affordable....oh, wait.

Beercade 2 hosts pinballers vying for $170,000 national prize

More than 1,000 pinball players from 47 states competed Saturday for their share of a $170,000 prize pool. Beercade 2 in Omaha's Little Bohemia neighborhood hosted 16 of the players. The tournament has grown over the past few years with more than 8,000 events happening in 2023 alone. The bar manager of Beercade 2 said he's noticed more people joining the competitions.


Pinballers from all over Nebraska showdown at weekend tournament

Some of the best pinballers in the cornhusker state made their way to the metro Saturday to represent Nebraska on the national stage. The tournament took place at Beercade 2 and featured the top 16 pinball players in Nebraska in a best-of-seven competition. The winner earns a spot at the national pinball championship in Wisconsin later this year.

The Little Bohemia neighborhood near downtown Omaha hopes to reap the benefits of a business improvement district. Omaha City Council will again consider a special assessment, generated by the area of 13th Street between Pierce and Hickory Streets. An annual budget of $24,500 will improve the area through infrastructure, promotions, and landscaping.

Some new apartments were built there as well, more people coming into the neighborhood. Doesn't hurt to have a little neighborhood to cross over from the Old Market. Been there a few times and would look way better if polished up a little bit.

In Little Bohemia, just south of downtown, some businesses hope to improve the area with a business improvement district. But some feel left out. A barber shop, coffee shop, bars, a bank, restaurants, and the industrial sector. There’s a lot happening on this strip on 13th Street in Omaha.

Some real reporting from OWH on the current situation of redeveloping the area in the Little Bohemia district. It was nice to see the perspective of the existing industrial users in the area. They have started efforts to create a separate BID to help funds things like curb bump outs.

New businesses, real estate developers and long-time industries on South 13th Street are seeking to create a Little Bohemia harmony.

The recent regeneration of the neighborhood just south of downtown Omaha is a variation on its historical theme. Called Little Bohemia because of its Czech immigrant heritage, the district has always been a place where industrial businesses that make, build and fix things share the street with shops, bars, restaurants and people’s homes.

It looks like the main discussion around this would be murals on the walls under the bridges, but I didn't see anything of significance outside of that. Also, that is a rather old study with no momentum so far, unless I am missing something.

There are actually 2 separate bridges there from two separate railroads. The south bridge belongs to the BNSF and the north bridge belongs to the Union Pacific.

While they could be rebuilt to improve aesthetics, they can't really be raised or lowered much. From the Missouri River to the top of the hill (Appropriately named "summit" by the UP), the BN line rises 136' at a 1% Grade and the Union Pacific rises 110' at a 0.8% Grade. So the bridges are basically locked in at the elevation they are at.

When was the study done? It seems a little old but would be cool if they actually decided to incorporate it. Solid plans especially with the consideration of protected bike lanes near downtown.
