Wildlife in the City

I remember reading, some years ago, about a juvenile mountain lion sighted around 42nd & Leavenworth------yikes!

Deer and other large wildlife travel up into the city via the creeks and railroads. I frequently see deer on the South Omaha trail by 37th and D and under the F street bridge. Have also seen Deer on the Big papio trail as far north as Toll park. Several skunks, foxes, muskrats, etc like on the side of the creek and are easy to spot the morning after a big rainstorm when the creek floods.

I saw deer near my old house around 81st and Blondo a few years ago. Later at night, wife and I out for a walk, deer in the middle of the street.

Now live near 156th and Blondo, and there is a fox running around our neighborhood, plus a family of large racoons that marauds around on trash day.

I used to work with a guy from Ethiopia (accountant) who was complaining that at least in Nebraska I didn't have to grow up with dangerous animals like lions and such----then I showed him a news clip of a mountain lion that was cornered at that office building in Sarpy County---his mouth dropped. That shut HIM up.

The first one was in Lamp Park near Old Mill. There was one a couple of years ago photographed on the back porch of a house on 123rd street in west Fairacres. I was on 126th and walking my dog in the front of my house near there and I swore I saw one walking up the hill.

I was at the last Armitage lecture from the host of MofO’s Wild Kingdom. I suggested an episode that focused on how to manage the increasing number of threatened or endangers species that appear to be moving into an urban or suburban areas. Apparently, he liked that idea.

Had a big hawk flying around my house last night right about sunet.

This Hawk got a squirrel tonight. While he was snacking on it, another hawk showed up out of the blue and they proceeded to fight over it. These hawks have zero fear of people. The will fly 20-25 feet off the ground, right over people. The one was eating the squirrel in a tree right next to a bunch of kids playing. Crazy to see it all so close.

Thanks! We did have a lot of squirrels around here, we even feed them in the winter, but this summer most have disappeared as well as all the rabbits are gone.

Thanks! We did have a lot of squirrels around here, we even feed them in the winter, but this summer most have disappeared as well as all the rabbits are gone.

Hopefully the hawks will let a few squirrels and rabbits survive and reproduce so they have a steady source of nourishment. We do have more squirrels and rabbits back around this year, so maybe nature is balancing it all out. There are a few hawks out there watching too.

This morning, one our cats was screaming at the back door. We thought it was the stray cat that often comes by, but NO, it was a full size possum sitting on the top step looking into the house!

If you have ever been in Sothern Texas you know that this starling attack is a daily event on nearly every powerline. Especially where there are parking lots at night. I noticed this in a Google street view near 192nd & Pacific where trees are lacking. I wonder how long before these nasty things take over our city.

Yes, we definitely have starlings. They wreak havoc (poop on everything) on my property at least once a year. Seems to be mostly in late fall. Most annoying part is its never just a couple, it's always a huge swarm of them. But at least the come and go. I never see them for more than a couple weeks.

Saw a fox run across the street at 114th and Pacific yesterday. It ran right in to that wooded area on the SE Corner of 114th and Pacific.

Today there were a bunch of smaller turkey's on the sidewalk near 100th and Center.

Several times this summer have I have seen a great big Tom Turkey around Methodist hospital.

Same; we get fox, turkeys, frogs, birds of prey, a very occasional deer, and of course the usual racoon/opossum/feral child.

Do you get woodchucks/groundhogs out there? I've seen all of those in Dundee, and we occasionally get a groundhog sighting. Though, I think its just the one as he wanders from one porch to the next.

I saw several deer about a month ago just SW of the McDonald's at 84th st and I-80 in a small wooded patch between some houses and the interstate entrance ramp, It was I think around 7 or 8 pm. I was surprised to see this. This area is not far from Big Papio creek so I'm guessing they somehow wandered over from there. I seldom if ever see deer inside Omaha city limits, at least not in this part of town which is usually very busy with cars and traffic.

That said we have this really fat coyote running around the neighborhood recently. I haven't seen hardly any squirrels or rabbits lately.

It was pretty cool about 5 weeks ago when I went to Merritt Reservoir out by Valentine, I heard coyotes yipping every night, but I wouldn't expect that in the city. The coolest things I've seen around the neighborhood are deer, turkeys, and a fox.

According to one of the neighbors he's be thinning the racoon population at the abandoned Sunset Golf Course, just northwest of 90th and Center. I've saw one at Baytown along pacific a few years back too.

I see black squirrels almost everyday in my neighborhood in west Omaha..I’ve also seen a red fox a couple of times in my backyard..albeit the last time was one year ago..

Black Squirrels seem to be somewhat common in parts of Omaha.

If I remember it correctly, the Black Squirrels did breach the Nebraska/Iowa line until 30 - 40 years ago. I could be wrong, but it was what I remembered.

The only place I've seen the Eastern Gray Squirrel cohabiting with Fox (red) Squirrels is in Sedalia, MO, about an hour east of Kansas City, even though, according to Wikipedia, their ranges overlap. In Omaha I've only seen Fox Squirrels, but here in St. Louis and back in Chicago we only have Eastern Grays.
