From JoJo Domann to Devine Ozigbo, here's how ex-Huskers fared on NFL cut day

Tuesday is the deadline for NFL teams to finalize their 53-man active rosters, making for an uneasy day for many players battling for the final one or two spots on a team. That includes several former Huskers. Here's a look at who received news — good and bad. Samori Toure got good news. The seventh-round pick made a splash during fall camp and led the Green Bay Packers in receiving yards during three preseason games.

JoJo Domann heard good news. Going undrafted wasn't the former Nebraska nickel's plan, but he's made the most of it. That won't surprise many Husker fans, who know all about Domann's toughness and resolve. Cam Taylor-Britt is headed to the injured reserve list. The Cincinnati Bengals' second-round draft pick earlier this summer had surgery on his core and missed the entire preseason. He is eligible to leave the IR after Week 4 of the regular season. Kicker Brett Maher was cut by the Dallas Cowboys, but he's likely to return to the team. Devine Ozigbo heard bad news. The former Nebraska running back was waived by the Denver Broncos but could go to the practice squad. The 25-year-old has already spent time with the New Orleans Saints, Jacksonville Jaguars, New England Patriots and the Broncos as he tries to gain traction in the NFL.

They played like they were defeated when the Bucs went up 19-3 and it wasn't even the 4th quarter. I was like "guys, come on, it's still just a two score game". That was disappointing because I like the Cowboys.

Former Husker Maher adds to historical NFL long-distance numbers

Former Husker kicker Brett Maher sure had himself a weekend. And when officials told him to prove it again – well, OK, fine. Besides his Dallas Cowboys obliterating the previously 8-1 Minnesota Vikings by a score of 40-3 in Minneapolis, Maher was 4-for-4, showing off his big leg along the way. Maher fantasy football fans owe the man a beverage after he made kicks of 27, 50, 53 and 60 yards. This includes Maher making that 60-yarder twice. Yes, at the end of the half, he connected from long, only to have the officials take it off the board, announcing the previous pass play was under review. They didn't change the previous call. So Maher kicked from 60 yards again. And made it again.

Wistrom Named to Orange Bowl Hall of Fame

Nebraska great Grant Wistrom is one of three 2022 inductees into the Orange Bowl Hall of Fame presented by AutoNation. Wistrom joins Oklahoma's Dewey Selmon and Miami's Bernard Clark Jr. in the 2022 class.

Wistrom is Nebraska's 15th inductee into the Orange Bowl Hall of Fame, including 13 Husker players and coaches Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne. Nebraska's 15 members of the Orange Bowl Hall of Fame is tied for second-most with Oklahoma, trailing only Miami's 16 honorees. Nebraska has played in 17 Orange Bowls in school history, its most appearances in any bowl game.

WATCH: Former Husker Domann scores an NFL touchdown

Former Husker defender JoJo Domann has his first NFL touchdown. Domann caught a blocked punt for the Indianapolis Colts and raced it back 24 yards for a touchdown against the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday afternoon.

While Domann is a backup linebacker for the Colts, he's been a key participant for Indianapolis on special teams in his rookie NFL season. Prior to Saturday he's been credited with five tackles. Domann wasn't drafted but picked up as a free agent by the Colts.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - He wears a cowboy hat, loves chili and cinnamon rolls, and farming is in his family’s DNA. Cam Jurgens is a Nebraskan through and through. This week, his rural roots are set to be on display at Super Bowl 57. “He would help out with the cattle and do chores,” said Ted Jurgens, Cameron’s dad. “He’d run the grain cart in the fall for the combine.” It all started for Jurgens on a farm just south of Beatrice.

With cows, hay bales, and bins of soybeans. This rural part of Nebraska is where Jurgens learned the value of hard work. “Working on the farm there’s stuff you have to do every day and he took that farm attitude and took it to the weight room and used it to work out hard every day,” said Travis Schuster, who coached Jurgens in both middle and high school. “He was always trying to do something to make himself better, so I think that farm stuff played a big part of that.” Before Cam Jurgens the Philadelphia Eagle there was Cam Jurgens of Pickrell, Nebraska. The family farm he grew up on has been in the family since 1907.

Former Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez selected in USFL draft

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Former Husker Adrian Martinez was selected in the second round of the USFL draft on Tuesday. Martinez was chosen by the New Jersey Generals, who are led by former Husker coach Mike Riley. For his final season of eligibility, Martinez transferred to Kansas State. He played in nine games and threw for 1,261 yards with six touchdowns, while also securing 10 rushing touchdowns. Martinez spent the second half of the season dealing with injuries, so he missed his team’s Big 12 Championship win and its Sugar Bowl loss. Before Kansas State, Martinez played four seasons at Nebraska under former head coach Scott Frost. He played in 39 games and threw for 8,491 yards, with 45 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. Martinez also rushed for 2,301 yards and 35 touchdowns.

Defensive backs from Purdue and Iowa didn't need the speed of Trey Palmer verified by a laser. But the laser confirmed. The Husker wide receiver backed it up at the NFL combine on Saturday by running an unofficial time of 4.33 seconds, which was top among the wide receivers and the third best overall so far among participants at this year's event. Only Michigan corner back DJ Turner II (4.26) and Maryland corner Jakorian Bennett (4.30) have been faster.

Lavonte David contract: Bucs re-signing LB to one-year, $7 million deal

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are re-signing veteran linebacker Lavonte David to a one-year deal, the former Nebraska Huskers football star confirmed Wednesday to CBS Sports HQ's Josina Anderson. The contract is for $7 million, NFL Network reported. He has spent his entire career with Tampa Bay after being drafted by the team in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft. In his NFL career, David has compiled 1,346 tackles, 29 sacks and 12 interceptions. David helped the Buccaneers defeat the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV, en route to them becoming the first team in NFL history to win the Super Bowl at their home stadium.

It took until the third day of the 2023 NFL Draft for a Nebraska player to hear his name called. But defensive end Ochaun Mathis finally became the first Husker off the board on Saturday.

Nebraska wide receiver Trey Palmer selected by Tampa Bay in NFL Draft

Nebraska had its second player come off the board during the third day of the 2023 NFL Draft on Friday night. Trey Palmer, who re-wrote the school record books during his lone season as a Husker last year, was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the 191st overall pick in the sixth round. He joins EDGE Ochaun Mathis, who was taken two picks earlier by the Los Angeles Rams at 189.

Doesn’t look like he played for them but Former Kansas State quarterback Adrian Martinez agreed to an undrafted rookie deal with the Lions on April 29.

Martinez is a very good athlete. But I don’t think he’ll have an NFL career..Among several mountains for him to climb, and probably the biggest- he is injury prone..

Perhaps I’m wrong and he makes an NFL practice squad. We’ll see…

If he could just stay healthy. The guy gets hurt it seems all the time. It's rare for former Huskers to play Quarterback in the NFL. I Wish him well.

When he's not hurt he is fun to watch and has some excellent football skills. His freshman year with the Huskers (which seems like a really long time ago) when he was mostly healthy was very impressive. And this last year at K-State he showed signs of brilliance before getting hurt yet again. It will be good for Nebraska if he has success in the NFL. Hope he can avoid injuries.

The other problem with Martinez, he seemed to shrink in the games biggest moments.. Sometimes “the moment” seemed too big for him..

That is a kiss of death in the NFL…

Former Nebraska DL Maliek Collins has spent the past 2 seasons in Houston, and he can plan on spending the next 2 with the club. The Texans have signed Collins to a 2-year extension, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported. Collins’ new deal is worth up to $23 million, with $20 million guaranteed.

Adrian Martinez had a rushing touchdown in his first NFL game for the Detroit Lions, preseason so the stats won't matter in the long run. But still pretty exciting! When was the last time a Husker QB had a rushing TD or throwing in the NFL regular season or Pre ?. Husker QBs don't have much history in the NFL.

I was tempted to say never... but did a short search, and Vince Ferragamo turns out to answer your question the best. At least he was the most successful QB at the professional level. I didn't even know he was a Husker. But you're talking almost 50 years since a Husker has made any noise whatsoever at QB in the NFL.
