Re: Moving to Omaha from NYC - looking for advice
Blackstone, Midtown, Dundee, Gifford Park, Leavenworth neighborhoods all seem like great options for you. Basically the area bordered by 52nd on the West, I-480 on the East, Cuming on the N, and Center on the S is the area I would start looking. Probably would be difficult to find a quality house in your price range so I would stick with apts, of which there are many good options.

What do you consider walking distance? You can include additional neighborhoods in your search depending on what you feel comfortable with in terms of accessibility via walking.

FYI I think you'll find the entire city feels safe by NYC standards. Not to speak ill of NYC, but things really are worlds apart.

NYC is safe as heck. It has a lower murder/crime rate than Omaha, so let's not distort things here.riceweb wrote: Fri Sep 11, 2020 11:51 am > Safe to walk the dogs around

Anyway, it depends on what you want. I'd probably put Blackstone up towards the top of your list though.

Whats this about the 3rd or 4th new poster in the last week that claims they are coming to Omaha. I am suspicious here. Sorry!

Agreed. The moderators were talking about this today too. The two Taj threads are both similar and both started by new people on their first post. One moderator also pointed out that two members have "Maximus" as the last part of their name. There are definitely a handful of new members that seem suspicious.GrandpaaSmucker wrote: Fri Sep 11, 2020 6:00 pm Whats this about the 3rd or 4th new poster in the last week that claims they are coming to Omaha. But isn't the Omaha murder rate stats come from north Omaha? I have yet to hear any crime on all other neighborhoodsGarrett wrote: Fri Sep 11, 2020 12:00 pmNYC is safe as heck. Murder and crime happens everywhere.Renovator2559 wrote: Wed May 24, 2023 12:28 am But isn't the Omaha murder rate stats come from north Omaha? I have yet to hear any crime on all other neighborhoods
The rates are higher in north O, but every city has areas that are "worse" than others. And of course confirmation bias plays a part too. If you thought North O had all the murders, and see one on the news, you'll think "yep, that makes sense. North O has soooo many murders".
Far and away though, if you get murdered it's most likely going to be from a spouse anywhere in the USA. Or at least a family member or other acquaintance.
NYC is overall about as safe as it gets. Omaha isn't bad. KC and Memphis... That's into the scary for NA numbers.

Crime stats vary more from one neighborhood to another within a city/metro area than they do from one metro to another. It’s always been that way. It’s the same thing outside the US, of course.

How come most news we get on shootings or homicides happen in North Omaha? Just taking a current snapshot of Omaha shows a clustering of crime in North Omaha. Is underfunded education to play a part and lower funding of those neighborhoods some of the reasons?Athomsfere wrote: Sat May 27, 2023 11:39 amMurder and crime happens everywhere.Renovator2559 wrote: Wed May 24, 2023 12:28 am But isn't the Omaha murder rate stats come from north Omaha? Are you stupid? Its the poorest area of Omaha. Just like almost every other city in the United States, the poorest areas of a city experience higher crime rates.Renovator2559 wrote: Fri Jun 02, 2023 5:53 pmHow come most news we get on shootings or homicides happen in North Omaha? It doesn't take much to see the link of underfunded neighborhoods, in education and other areas that lead to poverty.
Regardless, as I said, crime is centered in NO

It's poorer. Poverty being one good predictor of higher crime rates. Along with high religiosity, young demographics, and low education (as you mentioned).Renovator2559 wrote: Fri Jun 02, 2023 5:53 pmHow come most news we get on shootings or homicides happen in North Omaha? North Omaha is also, from memory, highly policed. Meaning petty crimes and misdemeanors are more likely to be met with a police presence than elsewhere.
It's denser, so even if the crime rate is exactly the same, its going to look like more crime on a map like that.
From what's in that map though: North Omaha doesn't look much worse than most of downtown / midtown. And you can't compare it to something like the area of Zorinsky or Chalco because the densities are so different.
I also, can't tell what that map is for. A day? A Week? 20 Years? It matters.

This show a likely more realistic picture. Although I'm not sure the methodology, so I'm not sure it's perfect either.

Yet South Omaha, Dundee and surrounding areas have comparable density and crime is not as high. Those outer suburbs are never to be compared, since people are isolated in "cells" in culdesacsAthomsfere wrote: Sat Jun 03, 2023 8:39 amIt's poorer. Dundee has the same density? Please. It's mostly older big houses. I say that as someone who lives here and walks it daily wishing for infill.Renovator2559 wrote: Sat Jun 03, 2023 12:34 pmYet South Omaha, Dundee and surrounding areas have comparable density and crime is not as high. There are a LOT of vacant lots, parkland, and just empty spaces in north Omaha. Yes, there are parts with many small homes on the same block but overall this isn’t exactly urban density paradise.
Anyways, this three year old thread from a poster under suspicion that’s supposedly from NYC has probably been diverted enough….

Seems like North Omaha echos some of the same vibes a Detroit. Good thing South and North Omaha are getting revitilization funds. Also the secondary phases of the streetcarline on 30th street and the ORBT route on 24th will tie in North and South to downtown and revitalize businesses along the way.NEDodger wrote: Sat Jun 03, 2023 9:24 pm There are a LOT of vacant lots, parkland, and just empty spaces in north Omaha.
