The last I heard was that a local development group (I was not involved in the project, and can't name the group that was) was very deep into negotiations with the seller but ultimately backed out of the purchase. As I understand it, there are significant structural issues with the three buildings that make up the site, and it was determined that redevelopment would be cost-prohibitive at that time. Interest rates and construction costs haven't been kind recently, and I think many project opportunities like this will sit for the time being.

Have there been any word on the building recently? This building looks creepy and honestly don't see how this building can be salvaged. Removing this building and developing this area would revitalize this part of the old market

The gate is now far more secure. The building door that had been forced open is now closed solid. That sidewalk ravine any transient or curious kid could have fallen into is now covered by a hardwood platform.

if rehabbed, this building would look f'ing amazing, and it's in a great spot. I know structural issues are an expensive fix, but it's too bad it has sat in the shape it is in for this long. Hopefully they can get something figured out here, it's a good lookin building

I thought the prior investor found the structural issues when they were trying to develop the property. Maybe the holes in the ground are to show said issues so the future buyer can perform due diligence on the property/didn't want to pay for the holes to be filled/once they discovered it, they couldn't just fill it back up because the issues are that bad.

That may be true, but I think you can at least cordon it off better/have a temporary cover to the sinkhole still like they do now. Walking by here after going to the Farmers Market was a disgrace. It was a safety lawsuit waiting to happen.

Not going to lie, that building is flanked by brand new, beautiful lanscaped sidewalks.
If this building can be salvaged great if not demolish the building and build an equally tall building that blends in perfectly in color and style to the Old Market.

This is one of the buildings I think about when people complain about Jobber's Canyon. If people actually cared about conserving old buildings, then there wouldn't still be a bunch of them vacant and mouldering 30+ years after Jobber's Canyon was torn down. Even if none of the old warehouses were torn down, what percentage of them would be in the same state today?

Don't get me wrong: love old buildings. I live in one. But ultimately not everything can be preserved. Sometimes we must destroy before we can create.

Regardless, it would be nice to see some progress on this, one way or the other.

So Bluestone has officially bought it or is this a partnership?

I hope this becomes a little more than a residential development but any kind of a salvage vs tearing it all down is a win.

A planning dept document for the new park being developed on Bemis property included this support letter. It is from the owner of Bluestone confirming they own the Fairmont now. It will be interesting to see how this ends up.

I can already envision how this area is going to look like. The nice post office building surrounded by green space and a plaza with a coffee shop, overlooking the renovated Fremont Creamery. This area is currently sleepy, as there are a few parking lots. Soon this area will have proper third places for the nearby apartment buildings for residents to meet.

The Old Market vibrant corridor continues to expand and the urban fabric will be stitched with a patchwork of walk-ability and continuity

does anyone know if there are plans for the building between the park and the gas station? (pictured)always thought it was a neat building with the awning but can’t remember there be anything there. With the attached designer i’m way more excited about this project and can’t wait to see it finished. i think the spot though it’s going will rely on redevelopment of that building and others near.

So, I've always been very impressed with BlueStone's developments and following through. Curious why this project has not been talked about for so long. Maybe this building is just too far gone and complicated floor templates to be saved.

It's crazy to me that this has been left to rot for essentially 30 years. I'm also baffled by the building across from the hotel that now occupies the old Diner location. that has been mostly empty with a for lease sign since I remember a restaurant being there in the late 90's. As someone said above, we sit and lament Jobbers Canyon nonstop, but watch buildings rot all around us.

So, if so, that would have been an industrial use in a now almost fully commercial part of town and there is no way Gary's Quick Steak was using more than a floor or 2. If you look up on Youtube, there are urban exploration videos in there that show literally decades of neglect. My guess: they probably were in there, operating in a barely noticeable manner and utilizing a fraction of the square footage while the rest rotted. So, certainly not the highest use of prime old market real estate.
