Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert will not recommend annexation package in 2023

Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert says there will not be an annexation package recommended in 2023. Stothert announced her decision Tuesday, saying the annual evaluation did not show any Sanitary and Improvement Districts that met her annexation goals. "This year is a unique exception to my strong record of growth through annexation," Stothert said in a statement. "We carefully evaluate every SID to be certain we can generate new revenue and continued growth of our city. This year, it is not financially beneficial."

Stothert said her goals for annexation recommendations are: revenue positive for the city over the next 10 years, eliminate islands already surrounding the city and the ability to provide police and fire protection.

Wow, no annexation, that is something that we have grown accustomed to here in Omaha.

I am still waiting for our neighborhood in Bellevue to get annexed. They recently annexed areas just to the north and our neighborhood originally started 15-20 years ago, although most of the growth has been in the past 5-10 years. Can't wait for the lower taxes.

Can someone explain to me the process of annexation? Someone in another thread mentioned Greta isn’t likely to get annexed by Omaha anytime soon, if ever, and I have no idea what would even need to take place for that to happen.

The state laws on annexation would have to change. Cities cannot annex across county lines.

Besides not being able to annex across county lines, you also can't annex a city over 10K. While Gretna is not currently at 10K, it wont be too long as fast as they are building houses out there.

Besides not being able to annex across county lines, you also can't annex a city over 10K. While Gretna is not currently at 10K, it wont be too long as fast as they are building houses out there.

I believe you can annex over 10K, but it requires mutual consent. That is unlikely and much more difficult than a take over annexation of a population of less than 10K
