Cities Skylines II

Post by stormchaser »

If you’re a gaming city builder nerd (like me), it’s tough to not be EXTREMELY excited for Cities Skylines 2.

Here is the trailer and a break down of the trailer. I believe much of it IS from within the game engine (which is amazing), just altered to allow for the camera movements and to look more cinematic.

Epic stuff though.

Full trailer here:

I am certainly excited for this.

I'm hoping this can fix some of the issues I have with the game. Still to this day, I play SC4 because I still like it better. The 125 tiles certainly helps with one big issue I have with the original game.

I had not watched that trailer breakdown before. But there's some major things they are reading into that are unlikely to be true.

He mentioned using UE5. Based on everything I have heard (including the makeup of CO), they are most likely sticking with Unity. It allows them to reuse assets from the original game and is more modder friendly.

They likely are only using UE for the trailer. It's why that "not actual gameplay" disclosure is there.

I'm very excited for this as well. Though with every new city building game it means I need to get a new computer that can handle the software. I have made at least two computer purchases so that I can play a city building sim.

Yeah, possibly anyway - who knows at this point. Either way, there are multiple clips that I'm pretty sure are in-game in the trailer (like the one below).

Found some in game images that were added to the Xbox store and have since been removed (apparently an “oops”).

Looks pretty cool IMO:

Small world, who knew there were CS fans here. Can't wait to build a variety of walkable neighborhoods and continue the building momentum of pedestrian dominant areas as in CS1 and make walkable vibrant suburbs.

Also it was cool to see in CS1, how someone ported the Omaha street topography, FNBO tower and the CHI Health Center to CS1; I'm sure it won't be long until someone does the same thing with CS2

Me!

I'm really looking forward to C:S II, but I got into C:S I after it had been out for awhile and feel somewhat obligated to seeing my cities through before moving on to C:S II, especially considering the amount of money I dropped on it and the expansion packs. I also have a theory that my computer will need an upgrade before trying to run C:S II.

I kind of feel you, but at the same time... The improvements to how cims choose their method of transit and pathfinding are a game changer. I can't wait for that change and mixed used buildings.

They go into detail in the dev diary over how cims prefer certain housing types now as well, and make rent part of the factor. A lot of the AI and mechanics sound vastly improved, and you will be more incentivized to have a mix of zoning types

Yes! It's awesome! And various "costs" for travel times too...

I am very hyped.

Just in time, I just finished building a new system with top specs, which I need for generating AI content/models and for sure I will use those CUDA cores to run CSII, hooray!

Also, does anyone know what the chirper clock park in CS1, counting down towards and what's the prize? When it reaches to 0 on the launch time of CSII?

I heard the release was somewhat disappointing due to game chunking and having to crank the graphics wayyyy down.

That's what I was afraid of. Cities:Skylines 1 was pushing my "gaming" PC to the height of its capabilities. With improved graphics and a more complex simulation I had a hunch C:S II would not be worthwhile for many until the price of better performing technology comes down.

I believe that was for AMD GPUs, I was with team red prior but now I just heard that AMD is laying off many in their R&D because their recent launch did not do as well as they have hoped. They even scrapped the 8900 that was planned for release.

It sucks because we need a proper competitor to Nvidia, so that they won't engage in price gouging.

On the CPU end, AMD is doing quite well though, releasing their Threadrippers and leaving Intel behind.

As for me, the performance has been smooth as butter, even with settings cranked up to the max on 4k resolution. The complexity of CSII over CSI, makes the overall simulation much more realistic. So much content in the base release!

I've been running things on max on my 3800X and 3080 @4k.

Averaging 22fps, which for this game is fine. It hiccups when I suddenly zoom way in.

It appears to be mostly optimization though. Gamer's Nexus did a performance review too, and the first path gave most cards at least a 5% uplift. And they dived in on what settings to get most cards over 30fps.

No regrets here for pre-ordering the game.

Yeah I’ve been relatively fine on my partner’s relatively higher end laptop. My city just broke 100k cims and is a bit slow now and then but it’s mostly ok. Apparently the big issue right now is how high detailed pedestrians are, including full sets of teeth that have as many polygons are full skyscrapers. Turning them off in Dev mode apparently fixes most issues, but then of course you don’t have pedestrians haha.

With the 4090 OC at 4k, I still don't feel the stutter, If there are frame drops, they are not noticeable; When moving around, zooming in. I do wonder if mods will affect the performance though. Hopefully patches will further optimize the simulation.

I remember when I first played CS1, I would experience stutter, slow frame rates but I would still ignore that and still be immersed solving problems.

Once I get back, I can continue with my city of hexagonal, equilateral triangular street grid and using perfect angles spacing and streets that line up in this build.

Generally I do a more standard organic street layout but
I just wanted to have fun with math. Create geometric, symmetrical patterns on this one and see how the most common, recurring geometric shape in nature, the hexagon and sacred geometry could be put to use.

P.S. GeForce Now is running a promotion free for 1 month, if you use the code Cities Skylines, which let's you stream CSII from Nvidia servers, only $19 every month there after.
