Made it out to the Safari Park today. It was decently crowded, but nothing like during Covid.

The Dino's are cool, but the real wildlife is still better.

They have been closed for a while, addressing issues with the roof. I have never seen a report on how extensive the issues were / are

31 year old glass roof on arena size building with high humidity inside. I'm sure it had some fixing up to get done lol.

I know that they were replacing all the roof panels to allow for more natural light to come in.

they had a facebook update yesterday and they closed by saying "We know you've been 'otterly' curious, and we can't wait to have you back to enjoy all of the renovations."

so it sounds like they've done some other things, too, and that there are otters involved in the renovation process in some way/shape/form

About 15 years ago, a zoo employee told me the zoo was quietly buying all the properties that border it with the long range goal and expanding the zoo. I was curious and checked out the DC Assessor to see if there was any truth to this.

YES! The two blocks South of the entrance- over half of the parcels are now owned by the Omaha Zoo Foundation. Look at the back corner by the river and Asian Highlands...Quite a few lots owned by the zoo. Many of the bigger lots are all owned by same 4 or 5 individuals. Not sure if that's an incognito name for the zoo, but definitely matches what I was told.

Did the IMAX at the zoo stop being an IMAX? I see it's now called "Lozier Giant Screen Theater" which makes it sound like the store brand equivalent of an IMAX. This change may have happened quite awhile ago. I don't follow it that closely.

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium has selected D3D Cinema to upgrade the existing IMAX® 15/70 film-based Lozier Theater to a state-of-the-art Christie Digital 4K 3D projection system, which will be installed in March 2018. Upon reopening, the theater will be called the Lozier Giant Screen Theater.

I don't know for sure but I believe they still can if they choose. It is a "brand" thing as I understand it.

Henry Doorly Zoo’s Lied Jungle fully reopens after roof maintenance

One of the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium’s permanent exhibitions is fully reopened. The zoo announced Friday that the Lied Jungle is now open for normal hours and capacity. The jungle had been closed for roof repair due to hail damage from last year’s severe weather. A partial reopening began in June to allow animals inside to reacclimate to guests. The Lied Jungle is now open daily. The upper level is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the lower level opening at 9:30 a.m.

Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium celebrates Member Appreciation Week

Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is celebrating its members all week long. This week is Membership Appreciation Week at the zoo, and each day there's a different theme. Multiple sections of the zoo will have special events and learning opportunities. Examples include bubble parties, a penguin dance party and a behind-the-scenes tour all at the Scott Aquarium on Wednesday. Similar events will be held Thursday in the Simmons Aviary and Friday in the Asian Highlands section of the zoo. Staff said having a membership is a great way to support the zoo's conservation efforts.

Wish they still did this and extended the hours until 7-8 pm like they used to. I can understand though, it is probably tough to get all the staff there for those hours.

They do late nights at the zoo on some Thursdays which is a lot of fun.

Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo announced the birth of another baby elephant. The female calf was born early Sunday morning to Jayei, the matriarch of the African elephant herd. “We have been anticipating the birth of Jayei’s calf,” Sarah Armstrong, the zoo’s elephant manager, said in a statement. “She is our most experienced mom and was pivotal in the successful births of our first three calves to first-time moms.” The zoo's elephant family quarters will be temporarily closed to the public to allow Jayei and her baby — the fourth African elephant calf born at the zoo — time to bond.

Was just thinking about the zoo. I have been wondering if we see a big slowdown in new development. Mainly for two reasons. One, we just kind of wrapped up what I would imagine is the biggest overhaul in the zoo's history. But the second and main one is we have a new Zoo Director.

If you remember when we switched from Simmons to Pate, we went several years without many new projects or construction at the zoo. It was when Pate was really looking at the zoo as a whole and working on what would become the major changes I referenced earlier.

Now that we have a new Director, I imagine he will want to take time to study what he has, and what changes/upgrades/additions he wants to make.

I was trying to find this online but couldn't find a ranking anywhere.... How does our elephant herd size compare to any of the other top zoos? I know we've been one of the most successful breeding programs out there, but also know we've lost one or two/transferred others out. Clearly the largest herd in the US is the wildlife preserve in Florida which houses the old Ringling Brothers / Barnum Bailey elephants, but in terms of actual zoos, we have to be up there, right?

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium names new baby elephant

The Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium’s almost threeweek-old African elephant calf has been named. The calf's name is Amandra. The name, pronounced “ah-MON-dra,” was chosen by a Zoo donor and their family and means “strong woman.”

The Zoo is now home to nine African elephants, four of which are calves:
Eugenia, born on January 7, 2022 to Kiki
Sonny, born on January 20, 2022 to Claire
Mopani, born on March 2, 2023 to Lolly
Amandra, born on August 6, 2023, to Jayei

A fifth calf, to expectant mother Omma, is due to arrive in spring 2024.

Rhino from Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo arrives at LA Zoo

Los Angeles recently welcomed a rhino from Omaha. Marshall, a 4-year-old male greater one-horned rhinoceros, was transported from Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo to the Los Angeles Zoo last month. As is protocol, Marshall has spent the last month in quarantine since arriving in Los Angeles on Sept. 9. Now, he has been welcomed into his habitat and is ready to make his official debut to Los Angeles Zoo visitors.

Admission for Zoolightful is separate from the day admission and is not included in annual membership. Members have different pricing, but for everyone else, it's $20.00 for 12+ and 3-11 is $16.00. Not super cheap, but it's one of the few wintery events that actually tries to take advantage of the cold in the metro.
