Excellent food, lots of grab and go options, fun store with lovely employees. They mostly have store brand products, but they're delicious.
That's just too many hipsters (current or former) in one spot. lol :P

Absolutely right on that point. We shopped there at least twice a month.
That was the short-lived place on Center behind Panda Express, yes? I never made it in there. Location in the city was good I think - the parking lot and layout/location of that exact store wasn't great. Did it even make it 3-4 years?

And to no surprise nothing has come in to take over the space since being vacated. I'm sure it's $$$$$$ rent and location that kill(ed) that place.
It's behind Chipotle on 132nd and Center. ALDI took over that space. The space of the former location on 144th and Maple is still vacant I believe though.

That's where one of the Fresh Thyme locations used to be. djc311 is referring to the former Fresh Thyme location at ~176th & Center on the north side of the road back near Runza and the Hampton Inn.

I have never encountered anyone in Omaha before … ever, as in pre-Covid, that didn’t think Hy-Vee was the most expensive store in town.

My sample size is limited but still amounts to quite a few people over the years.
My old signature got too old. So old it was getting almost as old me as me. Yeah, it was up there in years.

I worked at Hy-Vee back in high school starting in 2011 and it definitely had the perception of being an expensive store then too.

Used to be worth going to Hyvee, you’d spend a bit more but customer service, quality, and overall experience was better while shopping. However now I just can’t justify it, their prices are so much higher than other grocery chains around.

They took too many chances on non-grocery items and lost their original focus.

They're trying to compete for that group of customers that likes to buy their ground beef at the same store they buy their blue jeans at (i.e. the Walmart and Target audience).

I agree this is their goal - I don't agree that it will work. People don't want to buy jeans or tshirts while they happen to be shopping for groceries... they want to buy jeans and then pick up some groceries while they're at that store. Sounds the same but totally different.

I just went to Hy-Vee at Gretna, boy is it far but Hy-Vee did a great job in making this Hy-Vee upscale and modern. Love the high canopy like entrance.
All the fonts they use in the store are san-serif fonts and no longer curly/serif.

Good to see Des Moines is giving us some love with this new store.

We checked it out Saturday night - weird to say we went to a grocery store as a family when our girls are 11 and 20!

Very nice inside; I do like the street scape design where all of their food counters (including Wahlburgers) is located. We actually had dinner there as my wife has always wanted to try Wahlburgers’ food - we thought it was good, but we will have to see if we’d go out of our way just to eat there again.

The liquor store is giant - and we even got a drink at their bar to enjoy while we walked the store. The Starbucks area probably had more seating available than the actual Starbucks on 175th & Center has inside.

I’d say the store is so big that we didn’t even make it through the whole thing before we said we should checkout with the few refrigerated and frozen items we picked up.

I’d say we were impressed with the store for sure… now if they would only lower their prices to make shopping there even better.

BTW, the Culver’s is nearly framed that they’re putting on the west side of the store. Will be interesting to see what else they get to build on that corner.

Glad to hear your family had a good time in the new store!

Well, as for lowering prices, its difficult for Hy-Vee to do so, simply because they pay their employees well and give them benefits, plus a large portion of the the items Hy-Vee sells are of high quality and or are sourced from local farmers/growers, plus also the overall customer experience is much better do to the high quality displays, materials and accents used throughout the store and private single bathrooms. Where as Walmart gives the bare minimum and sources a lot of their items from China

I'm glad to hear from someone who's likely very close to HyVee (employee perhaps?).

I definitely concur that the stores look nice and provide a better atmosphere than WalMart. I'm also a firm believer in paying above average to employees as many companies don't do that, making it difficult for many to live decent lives. At the management scale I have no idea what dept. managers are making at HyVee or WalMart (simply using WalMart as a reference since it was mentioned previously). I do know that upper managers (ie, store directors) at either store are easily exceeding 6 figure salaries. Of course there are relatively few of these working at each location so that part of the payroll is likely not large. However, as someone that's had a family member in high school work for HyVee and a different family member work at WalMart, I'd say the starting pay is relatively close - if anything WalMart seems to start lower-grade new hires at a slightly hire rate (my HyVee family member got hired at $13/hr... not terrible, but I know Target starts no one under $15/hr and I think WalMart is somewhere in that range).

It's hard to argue that we're being overcharged, especially if I'm willing to pay the costs. However it is frustrating when you visit two different stores where an item is $4.50 and the exact same item is over $1 more at HyVee. And this applies to several items, likely in the hundreds. ~20% more for a product that has to be coming out of the same factory/manufacturer is not value just because you're buying it from HyVee instead of WalMart. Keeping in mind the vast majority of my shopping trips involve me being the cashier. :)

We all know that the store will succeed as long as they keep getting customers and I hope that's the case! But I can say I'm by far not the only guest on this forum that thinks HyVee charges more than virtually any other grocery store in our market and I'd have to say it's difficult to justify that by saying the end caps and product gondolas are better looking at HyVee. I'd even go so far to say that Lozier is likely making the majority of the fixtures in all of those stores.

The last thing I'd contribute is this - if we do still visit HyVee, it would likely be 180th & Q because of the proximity of the store, I hope that the new 370 location helps the Q St. store maintain better inventory. In 20 years of going to that store on Q St. it was very regular to go in looking for an item or two that was empty on the shelf with no backstock available. According to employees I would ask at the store it was due to not having much storage room in the back.

We used to shop at Hy-Vee because it was the first supermarket we went to in the Omaha area. After a while it became apparent the price difference overall between Hy-Vee and other supermarkets, but we liked Hy-Vee because they have cleaner, nicer stores. That was before we had kids. Now, we don't want to spend the extra money at Hy-Vee because it's a nicer store or whatever. But that's personal choice.

One store that I recently went to that I think gets the price/value vs. store niceness balance right was Meijer. We went to one a few weeks ago in SW Michigan and it was awesome. It was a newer store built in 2019, so it might be nicer than the normal Meijer store, but the groceries were surprisingly affordable. Maybe food is cheaper in Michigan, but that is a store I want in Omaha after visiting one.

I made the 12 mile journey out to see the Gretna Hy-Vee first hand yesterday morning. First up let me confess/admit that I am a bit of a grocery junkie. As long as I can remember I have enjoyed most of my trips to grocery stores. Now that I am retired I am in no hurry to “get in and get out” when I go grocery shopping. I love to cook, and certainly since Covid struck I have been cooking a lot more meals at home, and eating out less often. I’m always looking for new seasonings, sauces and other products to add to my diet.
I can remember being impressed when the first Super Targets opened here, and also impressed with Whole Foods, and even Trader Joe’s. Each of those offers products not sold in any other chain store. Even the various middle eastern and Latin American markets, and especially the large Asian market off 76th and Dodge sells food products I can’t find anywhere else in town.
But this giant new Hy-Vee, seemingly the size of a cruise ship, absolutely blew me away! I’m not a particular fan of the Hy-Vee chain, but their corporation pulled out all of the stops with this place. Their bakery featured a nice assortment of artisan breads at much less cost than other quality bakeries in town. And they had a decent (for Omaha) mix of European pastries, with a strong emphasis on Greek items. They all looked delicious.
Likewise their Italian section was the largest I’ve seen outside of an Eataly store, and their Indian and Asian selection was deep. Not quite up to an Indian or Chinese market, but it will get the job done for almost any occasion. And I would wager that their Latin American aisle has more different products than there are Latinos living in the Greater Gretna area.
The wine and liquor selection is very good for being attached to a grocery store, and there were unbelievable bargains to be had.
I don’t know how often I will venture back to the store, given it is a 20 minute drive from my home. But if I’m looking for something new to try out in the kitchen I’m certain this store will give me 50 different options to explore come dinner time. It’s a huge feather in the cap for Gretna.

Interesting report. I made it there last week but mostly spent time in the wine & spirits section. I can't share the same enthusiasm for that department. Overall for the magnitude of this store I found the offerings disappointing. The Millard and Q St locations have a far superior wine & spirits selection. The tequila selection here was all garbage. Import beer was minimal. The wine selection while not surprising, though still disappointing, tilted heavily toward overpriced domestic prestige labels. And yes, I see where many are you are coming from about pricing. The same bottle of whiskey Gretna Hy-Vee wanted $75 for Gretna Wine & Spirits had for $59. You could make a case that the selection here is catered to the demographic but that seems contrary to your(nativeomahan's) report on the food. In the context of this being a new store opening I can give this department some leeway but it still seems odd that it lacks the same cosmopolitan diversity as the food.

Agreed. I had very high expectations and was let down. They have a whole section for their sports stuff, but not one Indy car souvenir to buy (there was a cardboard cutout elsewhere in the store). Also as someone who goes to the Asian Market once or twice a week, I didn't even bother going down their Asian aisle as I knew it would be the same brands and stuff as their other stores. Overall, it's a good place for Gretna mall walkers to go in the winter. Easy to get your steps in there.

The Wall to Wall Wine and Spirits and Wine, Beer and Sprits stores definitely have more depth in terms of micro beers, wines and even liquors compared with ANY grocery store liquor department. Not even close. But I think some are comparing apples to oranges if they expect a grocery store alcohol department to be as good as a free standing booze shop. The latter are destination places. You go there with the sole intent of purchasing booze. That’s not why 95% of the customers to a grocery store walk in the doors. Given that, I think that this Hy-Vee has a good selection of wine and liquor. I didn’t look at their beer section so I can’t comment on that. Will you be able to find that obscure Spanish Albariño or German Eiswein you are craving? Likely not. But likely you will find a suitable wine for your summer barbecue or next dinner party. And I lost count after about 50 different brands of tequila/mescal. It won’t impress anyone in Guadalajara but if you can’t find something to please you my guess is you have some bigger issues with alcohol.
And I don’t go to a grocery to purchase clothing or sports memorabilia. I don’t understand the allure. I don’t go to Dillard’s to purchase deli meat or pork and beans for the same reason.

I mostly agree with you in concept. I have heard about Wall to Wall. I'll have to make a point to check it out sometime.

I think most Hy-Vees have an above average selection of wine and spirits as it goes for grocery. The Gretna Hy-Vee has that too and will likely satisfy most consumers expectations. It seems clear to me that Hy-Vee stores have local buyers which would account for the wildly different alcohol selection among locations. Compare say the Center & Saddle Creek location say with the Millard store and it's a night and day difference. Hy-Vee's Millard's Wine & Spirits store could be a destination based upon selection.

My observations overall come from the perspective of someone who works in the food & beverage industry. From that perspective and the magnitude of a flagship store I think the Gretna location missed on many competitive opportunities. Given your report on the cosmopolitan nature of the food selection I was surprised the wine & spirits side didn't take it to the same level. It doesn't seem like there was much coordination between the food and beverage departments as they may relate. I wish I could've spent more time in the food portion of the store but was largely there to pick up a few last minute requests for a family gathering so I'm relying largely on your report of the food selection.

Yes in general and no in the case of many Hy-Vee locations. The Hy-Vee locations with full wine & spirits build out are banking on consumers not going somewhere else by yes, being convenient, but also buy having a larger selection thus reducing most customer needs/desires to go elsewhere such as a dedicated booze store. It's a good strategy as many people like to limit the number of places they'll go.

You lost me here. I'm guessing this is in reference to Wall to Wall?

I don't generally shop hy-vee, only because we are a family of 5 and many of the repeat items we get, we will grab from walmart. If we want meat other than chicken or ground beef or something, I'll hit fareway. But I'll say this: the gretna hyvee is one of the nicest stores I've ever seen. Their wine and spirits has a pretty incredible selection for not being a category driven store (think officemax for office supplies vs walmart for office supplies). Besides wine and spirits, they also have great hot food options; their italian/chinese/deli offers much of the same you get at a traditional hy-vee, but the pizza oven they have is just plain cool, and it alone draws you over to see what's going on. The sandwich shop actually has some good sandwiches (I've had 2 from it), and the hot deli counter is good as well. They have a ton of cheeses, and their bakery/meat department are merchandised incredibly well. They even have aged beef on display that they will cut right in front of you. They have a small toy section and a decent home goods section. Yes, you don't make plans to go there for either of those, but if you are there and spot something quirky or cool, you may feel inclined to pick it up. I think most of their clientele are going to be somewhat more affluent than the average hy-vee, so it makes sense to have things there that wouldn't sell somewhere else. I'll also say this: every time I've been there, it's always mid-day and it's always packed. They certainly have something good going

Being two miles away we have been going there to do our HyVee shopping. I will say the first complete of stops, I was skeptical. I really like the store too now. I like the layout, and the fact that they have more shelf space does not mean they just have more of an item, then have a bigger variety IMO.

You mention that they are busy. I agree with that, but the shear size does not make it feel crowded at all to me.

On a side note, I do see a number of familiar faces working there that were at the 180th & Q location where we use to go regularly.

I think the 370 location poached a ton of the Q St. staff, including the store director (who I am personally not a fan of, but that's a different story). The remaining staff at Q almost look like they're lost now... Since it's literally down the street from my house we still go to Q St more often than 370; part of that is also due to the dumb construction on Giles and 192nd right now (I would think they could time all of that to be done more simultaneously).

I'm hoping with the new store opening that HyVee corporate is simply allocating a lot of their resources to the Gretna location and in the near future their Q St store will pick back up. I feel they've really let Q St. go down hill quickly - everything seems so out of sorts and people working there don't seem to care. The other day I was in Q St at around 10am on a Saturday and entered through the main doors. I was heading to the liquor section to pick something up and the gate between the main store and alcohol area was down. I stopped in my tracks and obviously looked quite confused because a manager did see me standing there and she came over to let me in. I joked with her that we must be heading back to the "no alcohol sales before noon" rule on Sunday (which was total BS, BTW). She just laughed and said that no one was over there working yet.

Probably jumping to too many conclusions at this point in time but with 180th & Pacific plus 192nd & 370 now open, is HyVee going to support the 180th & Q St store? Once 192nd St is open from Giles to 370 I'm sure that will eat into the 180th & Q St traffic as well.

I'm hoping without covid being a big deal any longer that they decide to pump some $$$ into Q St and try to spruce it up a little. Otherwise I'm fearful it could turn into a gigantic MegaSaver that specializes in vapes, booze, pre-paid burner phones and CBD products! 🤣🤣🤣

When that counties finishes 192nd and Meridian Streets they can put the 180th & Q store out of it's misery. The last two times I went there it was empty when it would have been a steady. That area really loves storage units but a nice apartment complex with be a nice fit.

Wall to Wall (which is owned by HyVee) at 132nd and Center gained/poached the better HyVee beer managers, however I find the beer selection at Wall to Wall at 132nd is just average. I'm guessing they move more wine and liquor compared to beer.

Wall to Wall in Papillion is the big-un. Much larger and more variety than Center St. IMO. However, they weren't stocking one of my favorite imports. Or I just couldn't find it.
My old signature got too old. So old it was getting almost as old me as me. Yeah, it was up there in years.

I would guess that number is closer to 25 than 50 plus. Even so there wasn't one sipping worthy and additive free tequila. I only saw one very basic mezcal. Instead multiple sizes of the same brands and overpriced celebrity |expletive|. That's likely just fine for the demographics but not a place for true agave connoisseurs to seek out. Given the size of the store and that tequila has been on pace to overtake vodka in sales as of this year I say they can do better. And yes, most who shop there will likely be satisfied.

I’m not a big liquor drinker. Never have been. But living part time in Jalisco, where agave is the numero uno agricultural product, they do know how to put out some creative tequilas, most of which (like high quality California wines) never leave the state of their origin. I went to several tequila tastings and was totally blown away by the huge variety of flavors sold. My favorite had an apricot taste, but some taste of almond and other nut flavors. My favorite “house” restaurant margarita uses Jimador blue agave so that’s usually what I buy. I’m told that the secret is to always use fresh limes. It seems to work wonders.

There is the Culvers going up but that has signs up identifying it.

Close to Hwy 370, there is a Rocket Car that has started. It has a ways to go.
Also near Hwy 370 to the East of the Carwash near the new entrance that recently opened there is a building started with foundation work taking place. I have not seen what that will be yet.

We just stopped by this store yesterday and my guess is they're referring to the building just to the east of the HyVee. Same side of the street, basically the same development. From my brief observation I would think it may be a strip mall type building similar to what they've built next to other HyVees around the metro. However I didn't see a now leasing sign or anything else that would give any additional details about it.

If I were to guess it would end up holding the notorious nail salon, a hair place, perhaps a chiropractor, a vet and maybe a Scooters or some other food/coffee concept. Same old thing I'm sure.

If that is what they are referring to there is a multi-bay strip mall that is started that will be where you mention. I made the assumption that the question was referring to the two sites that have buildings going on that you can easily see from Hyw 370. You are likely correct though.

Here is an early copy of the plan of the area that I had saved. This HyVee ended up being larger than this indicated.

You can see the stip detailed here at 60,000 sq ft
I believe this is correct:
Rocket is on lot 364
The lot that is being built on that I have not found info on yet for what it is 367
Culvers is on lot 360

Damn bank (credit union). I understand their purpose, but do they really all make THAT much money? Especially all of these newbies popping up in the metro (Veridian is a good example). I can't say I'm surprised to see Chase or Bank of America since they're huge throughout larger cities.

Would be nice to see something new to the market (Whataburger, In N Out, etc). I'm sure that won't happen. Even something like Wendy's who probably hasn't built a brand new restaurant in Omaha in 10 years or more.
