How has Capitol looked in general over the CWS? Now that we are truly post-Covid and a lot more is open, I am sure they are hoping for some traffic.

We went there yesterday between games. The courtyard area or whatever you call it was pretty dead. I am pretty sure because of the heat.

We ended up at Annie's Irish Pub. It was full but not packed. Lots of LSU fans.

We had tried going to Let It Fly. First, it's very very nice inside. It's a big place. Definitely upscale for a sports bar. It was full again but not crowded. One in my party really wanted to eat there but it was a 40 minute wait to be seated and we didn't have that much time. I wasn't sure I wanted to as I had heard about the prices.

I am in both Omaha Food Lover's and Omaha Food Lover's Uncensored on Facebook. Both groups have very active posts on Let It Fly. For the most part people are really surprised on the high prices. $19 ($22 if you want bacon) for a cheeseburger and fries. $58 for 16 oz NY Strip and Fries.

These are their normal prices, it wasn't event pricing we were told. I figure they will do well with the Creighton basketball crowd but outside of that I think they are going to really struggle.

Thanks for the "review" of Let It Fly. I want to go there too, but not sure about those prices. It is weird though b/c their other 2 locations (Sioux Falls and Germantown, TN) both have burgers in the $13-15 range and pizza for $15.

When I go to the Omaha location website, it does show "baseball" menu, so maybe it is just a temporary smaller, more expensive menu. Hopefully that is the case, b/c I am not sure how long it would survive with $19 burgers and $58 new york strip.

Yeah they did indicate the regular menu would be larger but didn't say anything about the prices. We can check again in a few weeks. It is really nice inside.

For a $20 burger in Omaha it better be really good or a real upscale atmosphere. Not sure they will be able to command that longer term. Food prices are up all over though so they may just be ahead of the curve, unfortunately.

If the food is DJ's quality with those prices, though, I can't see that lasting. Doesn't need to be amazing just, you know, better than a school cafeteria, which is about where DJ's is at in my experience.

It might not quite qualify as being in the Capitol District but we went to the 1 pm CWS game on Monday and seeing that Blatt looked like a Walmart at 6 am on Black Friday we opted for the Mattress Factory. I hadn’t been in maybe 5 years. They were very busy of course but we snagged half of a large table in their overflow room, sharing it with 2 other fans. The service was prompt and friendly and the food was delicious. As I recall it was $18 for a smoked French Dip and a side salad. My friend got a sandwich and fries and it was $16 as I recall. It was a “baseball” menu, fairly abbreviated. Beers were $8. We thought the prices were quite fair considering the CWS was just up the street and they probably could have charged any amount they wanted and still packed the place.

Can't believe this but the original location here in Germantown has apparently been open for almost 4 years now. It's in a small strip center, doesn't seem that big from the outside but there's usually plenty of cars in that vicinity so they must be doing ok business wise. I have yet to go myself.

Cheeseburger in Germantown is $13 according to their online menu. So.... maybe prices will land in the middle somewhere eventually.

Another new entertainment business for the Capitol District. From this weeks Grow Omaha newsletter:

Net Par plans to open its first Nebraska or Iowa location by the end of the year in downtown’s Capitol District, according to Adam Maurer of The Lerner Company. The Omaha location will have eight indoor golf simulators and a full bar. It will be located a 6,000 sq. ft. space along 12th Street. Net Par has three existing locations all in the state of Indiana.

A Trader Joe's would be a great pick there. Affordable, mostly. A good range of essentials and pre-cooked stuff.

That also sounds like about the size of an Aldi's, no?

In a statement made via the Burgerim – Omaha Facebook page, the current owner announced the restaurant’s immediate and permanent closure on Saturday. Much beloved gourmet burgers, an excellent staff, and a spot in the coveted Capitol District weren’t enough to counter the mounting issues higher up in the restaurant chain.

“After two years of taking over this store and doing everything I possibly could to rebrand and create a better restaurant I have come to the realization that it’s just not going to happen. With every road block that has been thrown at me this summer, and the last couple of years at least I can say I tried and I fought. I would like to thank everyone that has came and supported this business, me and what I was trying to achieve. I greatly appreciate everyone of you, and you have made these last couple years worth fighting for.”

Omaha’s downtown Capitol District sees growth spurt



The Capitol District in Downtown Omaha appears to be going through a growth spurt. Two new businesses are set to open this fall: Roxxy, a retro 80′s-themed restaurant, and The Stuffed Olive, a martini lounge. Patrick Rupp with Frank’s Pizzeria in the Capitol District says business was slow when it first opened in May. However, he says business took off when Steelhouse Omaha opened across the street. “Every single event. Because literally, they have to smell us to get there,” Rupp said.

The Frank's pizzeria cook said they do more business at their downtown location than their other locations combined. I hope other local retailers planning to expand or move and companies looking into the market are paying attention.

I'll tell you what, I've had Frank's from all 4 locations (the one at Nebraska Crossing isn't listed....did it close?) and they were all good, but the one downtown I think did the best. 2nd best being the one on 132nd, and tie for 3rd was the Ralston & Nebraska Crossing location. They are all great, because they offer a slice for a couple bucks so it's easy to run in and get it and go. I think that will be a great model for people downtown, especially for those on lunch breaks and whatnot

I have written about (and eaten at) a lot of sports bars in the decade I’ve been writing about restaurants, and I can tell you this with some confidence: Most don’t have very good food. Food often feels like an afterthought, a requirement, a third most important thing after Miller Lite and big televisions.

Let it Fly, which opened with a flourish in June in the Capitol District, is an exception. I was not sure what to expect going in, though I saw some posts on social media from people I trust and it looked, frankly, pretty fancy for a sports bar.

In reality, it is pretty fancy for a sports bar. There is an actual cocktail menu, for starters. A wine list, a brunch menu, several entrees — steak frites at a sports bar? — and, as I tried for myself, several solid versions of bar food staples like pizza, wings and burgers. It might be the most food-focused sports bar in town. Others in the neighborhood are going to need to up their game to compete.

There’s a sign with a lighting built through a cheeseburger through it saying “Justice coming soon”. So guessing a new concept is coming here.

Went to Frank’s after the Creighton game today. $10 for 2 slices and a drink. The pizza was a little greasy and New York Style but tasted good. The Sicilian pizza looked amazing. Also love the free arcade games that are available.
