Let's see how this plays out. A lot of the radio talk has been around the fact that the complaints so far were for things like running stairs for not performing or breaking rules.Cermak wrote: Thu Jul 27, 2023 9:33 pm PJ Fleck now accused of running a toxic environment at Minnesota. Coach Rhule seems to have a natural ability in front of the microphone, that's something not everyone has. We know Frost didn't have it and neither did Bo. That should help him in dealing with the daily pressures of the job as well as recruiting. Hopefully he can have some sort of success at Nebraska. They almost have nowhere to go but up.

P.J. Fleck calls report of player mistreatment within Gophers program 'baseless'
INDIANAPOLIS — Gophers coach P.J. Fleck pushed back on a report of player mistreatment on his team, saying his program does not use physical activity to discipline players. "These allegations are baseless,'' Fleck said Thursday morning at Big Ten media days at Lucas Oil Stadium. The media outlet Front Office Sports published a report Wednesday critical of Fleck's program. Unnamed former players spoke of Fleck creating a "cult"-like culture with non-compliers subjected to punishable workouts and inequitable drug testing procedures. The report described "an environment fraught with intimidation and toxicity.'' Gophers athletic director Mark Coyle refuted the report and defended Fleck in a statement Wednesday. Fleck added that allegations like the ones reported by Front Office Sports aren't uncommon.

Re: Big 10 Conference
Wow. So many thoughts running through my head. Good for the Big12 for surviving and thriving! Just a couple years ago everyone predicted them to be the first power 5 to be non existent and now they might be one of the new power 3 if pac12 and acc dissolve. I could see the big12 adding a couple Carolina schools and becoming the premier basketball conference. I kinda figured some of the other Carolina schools and/or Florida schools would join the SEC. I also had a feeling clemson would go to big10 and hope Notre dame would also.

Big 10 examining potential additions of Oregon, Washington, California & Stanford
The Big Ten has started considering further additions to its 16-team conference with league members holding preliminary conversations surrounding expansion to as many as 20 teams, sources tell CBS Sports. While Oregon, Washington, California and Stanford -- all Pac-12 members -- are the programs under consideration by the league, it is Oregon and Washington that are the primary focus should the Big Ten chose to expand by two programs and become an 18-team conference.

Notre Dame is the only reason the Big Ten has to expand period full stop.
It will happen in due time once NBC or network to be determined later throws down the cash and says "this is the deal".
If Miami and Florida State came along for the ride, bonus but not necessary.

Big Ten leaders authorize commissioner to explore adding Oregon, Washington as expansion teams, per report
Big Ten school presidents authorized commissioner Tony Petitti to explore conference expansion with a focus on Pac-12 members Oregon and Washington, according to ESPN. No formal offers have been made, though according to Action Network, the league is merely sorting through financial aspects at this point as it zeroes in on the potential new additions.
Sources confirmed to CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd on Wednesday that the Big Ten entered exploratory discussions on another round of expansion with four Pac-12 schools -- Oregon, Washington, Cal and Stanford -- on the radar amid growing uncertainty around the Pac-12's future. The Big Ten previously poached USC and UCLA from the Pac-12 with the Los Angeles-based schools set to become Big Ten members on July 1, 2024, bringing conference membership to 16 schools.

How Big Will the Big 10 Get? Talking Expansion - Again!
Big 10 Commissioner Tony Petitti is exploring league expansion again. The conference is due to add the UCLA Bruins and The USC Trojans next season. Big 10 football schedules are set through 2025 and everyone seems happy with them. But the Pac 12 is dying before our very eyes. The Colorado Buffalos are bolting for the Big 12. The Arizona Wildcats, Arizona State Sun Devils, and Utah Utes may do the same any day. The issue is the lack of a decent TV deal after this season.
On the table is Apple TV streaming for 20 million dollars per school per year. That's not even close to what other conferences are getting for their media rights. The Washington Huskies and the Oregon Ducks, with pretty strong athletic departments, are in panic mode. They are in exploratory talks with the Big 10. What about the Stanford Cardinal and California Bears? What about ACC schools like the Florida State Seminoles, mired in a horrible TV deal of their own? They announced they want an exit strategy from the ACC within the next 12 months unless their media contract can be altered significantly.
Also in this episode we take a look around the Big 10 training camps. There's news regarding the Wisconsin Badgers tight ends, the Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback situation, and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights name a quarterback and more. Plus, week one point spreads have moved- we look at that on our weekly Pigskin Picks segment.

Oregon & Washington on verge of joining Big Ten, per reports
Oregon and Washington appear on the verge of joining the Big Ten. The programs, both charter members of the Pac-12 dating back to 1915, informed Pac-12 presidents Friday that they plan to accept an invitation from the Big Ten once extended, according to Yahoo Sports. The Big Ten is preparing to make those formal offers later Friday, according to multiple reports.

Re: Big 10 Conference
This map of new Big Ten shows how ridiculous conference realignment is
The newest wave of college conference realignment has hit in full force, and everything you thought you knew about college sports no longer applies. Oregon and Washington are now in the Big Ten. Arizona has been accepted to the Big 12, and Utah and Arizona State are poised to join them. All of this follows USC and UCLA going to the Big Ten a year ago, and Texas and Oklahoma jumping to the SEC. Meanwhile, Florida State is looking for private equity money to stay competitive in the changing landscape of college sports. It’s all completely ridiculous, with TV money winning out over the regional rivalries that make up the soul of college athletics. If you’re still feeling a little confused on how everything is shaking out, here’s a helpful map from ESPN’s Field Yates on the new Big Ten. It shows just how outrageous this conference conference is now.
Ah yes, nothing says the Big Ten like a Rutgers vs. Washington game. You can make the drive from Piscataway, NJ to Seattle in a little more than 42 hours! Just under 3,000 miles separate the campuses. This wave of conference realignment dismisses the fans and the athletes in favor of big money TV deals going to the top of these universities. Now we’re left with two super conferences, the Big Ten and the SEC, vying for the biggest pieces of the college sports pie, while smaller conferences pick up the crumbs. It’s easy to wonder about what happens to sports that don’t produce as much revenue as football. How will softball — the Pac-12 had such a rich history in softball — be affected? What happens to swimming and wrestling? How will women’s sports be impacted? This wave of conference realignment creates way, way more questions than it answers. The players will want to compete, and the fans will still tune-in. That’s all that matters for the people cashing the checks. It feels like most things in modern society are so much worse than they used to be in the recent past. Add college sports to the list. The problem isn’t players making money via the NIL — it’s the suits who are ruining everything about college sports.

Re: Big 10 Conference
I think what conferences have been doing has been crazy recently. I've had my own thoughts on how I'd run it personally. There are 56-64 "power 5" teams last time I counted, and some of those teams are a stretch. If we're gonna have a playoff, there can't be three conferences, IMO, it should be four conferences of 14 tops, defined mostly by time zone and region north to south. Each team plays every team in the conference for 13 conference ONLY games, and the conference championship is played between the two best teams in each conference.CBJason wrote: Sun Aug 06, 2023 11:45 amThis is generally what I’ve been thinking as well for the last couple months…a big 3. Conference champion moves on to a four team playoff. National championship teams play 16 games. Absolutely every game matters.

I don't ever see the college football playoffs shrinking to 4 teams. I actually think it ends up at 16.
I think we are headed eventually to 3 24 team conferences. Obviously Big 10 and SEC. Big 12 seems positioned to be the third. Whenever the ACC falls, I think it gets carved up and divided by those three.

Nebraska is now right in the middle of the Big10 geographically, gotta like that part, after being on the western edge for years. I bet USC and UCLA is happy about Washington and Oregon joining, at least those 4 teams are in the same time zone. Which should help with logistics and travel planning. Conference now 18 teams strong !

Yeah I am sure in future scheduling the four west coast teams will play each other once every season, and twice in other sports. I hope Nebraska sees those teams a lot. Assuming it's about as easy as going to Rutgers, Maryland and Penn State. And really not far logistically from getting into Purdue and Indiana.Cermak wrote: Tue Aug 08, 2023 6:16 am Nebraska is now right in the middle of the Big10 geographically, gotta like that part, after being on the western edge for years. I hate the 4 team playoff as is, but if the 4 teams are decided by a regular season tournament, them I'm all for it.
I really just do not like the way college football is set up. Too much subjectivity, opinion and bias involved. Not enough decided on the field.

Re: Big 10 Conference
I don't ever see it getting there either. Just makes too much sense. Probably would be lots of complaints about it being too much like the NFL. But really, it is more similar to it now than it ever has been. College football is already nothing like it was, and it's clearly never going back, so in my mind it would only make sense to take the final step of one governing body, or if not, eventually only have two conferences that eventually meet in the national championship.Greg S wrote: Tue Aug 08, 2023 1:48 pm It's an interesting proposal and definitely makes more sense geographically. To me what decides the size of a conference or a division is how many regular season games are played. 12 is great, but if the conference gets bigger, divisions get bigger, something has to give. Either no warmup games, or all conference or division games. That's why I ended upon 14 team conferences. I don't like divisions because a weak division winner plays a strong division winner. Example being when Ohio State (12-1) took on Northwestern (8-5). Ohio state won that game handily, and clearly Northwestern was like at best the fourth best team in the conference. So I like the idea of cutting out the fluff games, and every team in a conference plays every team in the conference, round Robin, that way we know for certain which two teams are the best based on record and head to head.
I landed on 56 teams, 14 team conferences because I don't really see players and universities agreeing to more games. So 13 games was my limit. I suppose 60 teams and 14 games, or 64 teams and 15 games might fly, but I don't see the point when the teams I eventually cut out are perennial bottom feeders.

Big Ten Shifts Expansion Focus to the ACC
After grabbing the USC Trojans, UCLA Bruins, Washington Huskies, and Oregon Ducks, has the dust settled with Big 10 expansion? No! The Big 10 is going to expand to 20 and we think they have their eyes focused on the ACC. But who makes the most sense? The Florida State Seminoles? The Miami Hurricanes? The Clemson Tigers? The Virginia Cavaliers? Or maybe the North Carolina Tarheels? Obviously, the ACC is anchored by a bad TV media rights deal that limits their flexibility. And the ACC has explored expanding on their own to protect their flank in case of defections. That is something the PAC 12 failed to do. We explore all the options and take a look at Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule and his first Cornhusker training camp. Huskers fans have high hopes for quarterback Jeff Sims out of Georgia Tech. And we look ahead to the weekend with the Big 10 Network's Big 10 Classics on Locked on Big 10.
