Local Business Names

On my way to work, I got to thinkin about how many business names have a commonality here based on where we are from. Example: River City Heating & Cooling, Metro Driveway Repair, Husker Electric, Aksarben Heating & Air, etc

I know this happens in other cities & states but I am curious what types of names other cities use. For that matter, I spent half the drive trying to think how many WE have HERE (that's something I should do when I can't fall asleep...)

Does Des Moines do that as much? KC? STL?

Sioux City has a lot of businesses that use variations of Sioux or Siouxland, etc...

"Midwest" always amused and confused me. For some reason, Ohio is considered midwest. For me, if you draw an imaginary line from north to south through the middle of the 48 contiguous states that would give you the eastern and western halves of the country. Now, if you take that western half and shoot for the middle of it, then you'd be in what? Utah? That would be the middle of the west (aka midwest).

I live in the Virginia “Commonwealth”. There are a scad of businesses and state agencies that won’t let you forget that. Everything from Virginia Commonwealth University to Commonwealth Plumbing Supplies. Runner’s up include “Potomac,” “NoVa,” “District” and “DelMarVa.”

Re:Omaha and Nebraska mottos, we need to have a regional smack down to finally decide which Midwestern community/state gets to use the expression “heartland.” Nothing violent, maybe just water balloons——————-in January.

When we lived in the Bible Belt there were a lot of businesses with Christian names like "Covenant Plumbing" and "Messenger Medical Imaging." There was always some Christian symbol in the logo to confirm their word choice was indeed a nod to Christianity. If not some overt like a cross, then it would be a dove or the like. Around here you'll occasionally see "veteran owned business" on a company vehicle, but down there you'd see things like "a Christian business" and whatnot next to the logo or company name.

I would typify MI OH as the Midwest, but I'm old! MN NE KS ND SD OK would be The Plains.

At one time, Pittsburgh was considered the "Gateway To The West". I'm serious.

I always assumed that reference originated pre-Civil War, when the Louisiana Purchase area weren’t yet made into states. Michigan, Ohio, Illinois would have been the “Midwest” of what was officially the country at the time. Just verbiage that was created and has now become outdated, but has been around for so long that it just continues.

You are correct. It’s very historical, and for that reason it will never change.
Rather like how the neighborhoods immediately west of Park Avenue/30th Street are called “Midtown”.

Midwest, Midlands, Heartland, Great Plains, and Husker are probably the most common statewide. In Omaha you can add ones like Metro, Big O, and River City. Though, I feel like every decent-sized city probably uses Metro. If you're near Offutt then you can probably toss in some corny patriotic names too.

Why not rebel? Someone open a new local business and call it Painted Desert Communications or New England Plumbing or something. lol
