What about Omaha surprised you?

Post by carter5 »

I recently moved to Omaha and it’s nothing like advertised(it’s better). It’s quaint but not boring. It’s humble but also enough. Would love to know your observations.

With it now being October, I'll lead off with the a halloween type theme. We went on a haunted tour of Omaha a couple years ago, and I didn't know Omaha had so many areas that were 'haunted'. Much of it dates back to the late 1800's/early 1900's, and had to do with gambling/bootlegging/prostitution/mob involvement. Apparently Omaha was part of a hub and spoke type operation, with KC being the hub for midwest mafia operations. Lots of related crimes/murders happened at that time as a result, and that's why some of the lore exists. There were/are tunnels under downtown where they would run booze and hide criminals, and evidently there are places where they said people were allegedly cemented into tunnel walls alive. Up in the one cemetery (name escapes me, I'll have to google it), they say the ghost of some mistress that ran a [reputable, for the time] prostitution ring in the city. She made sure they were safe, had health care, etc. So she was doing good, even though she was doing something bad?

Of course, there are other things that Omaha has/had been well known for. Once had the largest stock yard, vast rail history, etc, but those aren't as much of a surprise. At least not to us that have lived here.

The things that I think are great about Omaha when compared to other cities is that it's got enough hustle and bustle to not be bored (unless you don't know where to look) but not so much that we suffer some of the same burdens. Rush hour can take some time, sure, but I was stuck in rush hour in Memphis once and it took almost 2 hours just to get across the city...and Memphis isn't even THAT big.

I'll say one thing I love about cities like Chicago, NYC, Boston, etc, is that they have (obviously) better public transit. We are going to get much better in the future with the street car and BRT, but parking is a pain in the |expletive| here and driving everywhere is currently about our only option.

Other than that one thing, I/we could rant about Omaha for days...how much time you got? :)

I feel so violated, putting my heart and soul out there for someone to just be using us...

The only reason I’ve noticed is because they tend to copy a thread from Reddit about 12-24 hours after the original Reddit post is made.

Is it possible to not block entire countries? When I travel overseas I am often unable to access this website. Thank you

Well the thread did open up the discussion on Omaha lore, plus I learned a few things from your comment that I didn't know. So your comment did not go in vain to any guests, including myself :D

The mistress in question that gave her mansion to be a children’s hospital was Anna Wilson, namesake of both “Wilson and Washburn” and “Anna’s Place”.

I don't block many whole countries - just the ones with a lot of bad spammers - like China and Russia. Unfortunately we don't have a better way because otherwise it's a constant whack-a-mole situation.

My recommendation is to go through a VPN when in other countries where this is a problem. If you are tech savvy enough, you can even setup a VPN to your house for free. I personally use Wireguard. Tailscale is another option built on top of Wireguard and is easier to setup.
