I wanted to fill up now, before the inevitable price hike to $3.39-$3.49 a gallon. Need to stay ahead of the pattern…

Literally, the last time gas prices were this low in Omaha, the price shot up .50 cents a gallon overnight. The unpredictability of these wild fluctuations in price is, to say the least, very frustrating…

Gas prices just literally shot up about 40 cents in the last couple days. Wonder what happened to cause this ? Could be the approaching holiday be my guess. Sucks if you wanted to take a road trip.

Metro gas prices jump
Metro average is $3.63.

For months Metro gas prices have been the lowest in the state. They still are but they're rapidly rising and here is a number Omaha drivers haven't seen for quite some time: $3.69 a gallon for regular gas. But that's the number showing up all around the Metro and there's no indication it's going down anytime soon.

So, right now the Omaha average is $3.63 a gallon.
Just last week: $3.39.
A month ago: $3.27.
A year ago, $3.95, only a quarter more than what plenty of Metro drivers are currently shelling out.

Anyone else remember the days driving a few blocks to save a couple cents? On my trip to UNO I'd swap between the Amoco on 50th & Dodge and the M & N on 40th.

"We saw about 30 cents which is uncommon but not unprecedented," said Brian Ortner, the public affairs specialist with AAA Nebraska. The Nebraska average price of gas is in line with the national average at $3.83, causing concern for some Nebraskans. "What am I going to do when it reaches $4 and $4.50 and $5 a gallon?" said Clark Leyland.

It is crazy at the rate which prices increase. I saw several stations that increased prices by .50 in just one day. That is ridiculous especially since there is no major impacts right now (hurricane, war, etc) All the while some other stations remain unchanged and others went up .05 to .10. I think Kum and Go is one of the worst for this. At least at the one by Fairview Rd and Hwy 75. They do this all the time. It was $3.39 on Saturday and then $3.89 on sunday. That is a huge increase for some one that drives for a living, or even just people that have a long commute. Obviously not life changing or making you go broke but could result in an extra $50-100 per month.

It’s like the stock market. It goes up. It goes down. Few of us “average Joes” can predict daily fluctuations, except that over time it goes up more than it goes down.

That's a 15% increase.
50 cents more gallon, let's split your 50-100 range at $75 per month. That's 150 gallons of gas. Let's say your vehicle gets 30 MPG. That means you're driving 4500 miles per month.

For myself, my wife drives a Suburban that maybe gets 18mpg. Most cars in town aren't going to get anywhere near 30mpg. Between commuting and taking some small trips we probably avg around 2,500 miles/month between 2 cars.

Thankfully I use fuel points from Bakers and also a Sam's club card that gets you 5% cash back on gas anywhere.

My point is, there is no reason those few stations have raised prices so much.

We live in Gretna and as a result really pile the miles on our cars. If I worked in downtown Omaha, which a lot of people do and thankfully I do not, I'd be putting 50 miles per day on my car just driving roundtrip to work. So, 13,000 miles per year just for one person in one car commuting to work. If your spouse has a job on the other side of town too, then double that. That doesn't include leisure, errands, and all the rest. I realize that's the price I pay for living on the outskirts of Omaha and I'm okay with that. However, it can be shocking to see how quickly all of those miles add up. It can also be a bit deceiving as much of the driving is highway/interstate and so goes fairly quickly. So, you don't really notice that you're driving 20 miles as it only takes like 18 minutes to do.

Metro gas prices dropping
Down a good 50 cents less than a month ago.

Gas prices in and around Omaha are down, some stations as low as $3.24 a gallon and that’s a good 50 cents less than a month ago. And the drop comes despite global gas prices jumping up 4 percent since Hamas attacked Israel on Saturday. According to Triple A, the average price of regular gas in the Metro is $3.42 a gallon, down from $3.50 last week and $3.82 a month ago. Some experts are expecting more price drops over the next 15-45 days but are concerned that a prolonged Israeli war would send prices back up.

Fl was about 3.29 last week. Earlier in the week, it was about 3.89 further North in Boston and Bar Harbor, Maine. A little over a week ago, it was about a 7.00 / gal price equivelent in a couple of stops in Canada

Yes, Across the board at all locations. There was a statement made by Cosco that overall the Diesel volume was not enough, and the pumps and tanks would be better utilized for other fuel. Of course, I am taking editorial rights to the limit and paraphrasing.

Not sure what is going on with the relatively new Casey's at North Stream ( 204 & Q)

They started out with prices that were around everyone else up until about a month ago. I drive by almost daily. For the last month, they have been 30 - 50 cents higher than anyone else. Yesterday morning, they went to 3.94. The other newer Cases between Gretna and Elkhorn are at 3.39 this morning and had been at 3.29 for a while The one in Gretna is at 3..29

This location was at 3.69 for the last couple of weeks and 3.79 for a while before that. The other Caseys and the HyVee stations and the stations in Gretna had been between 3.14 and 3.29 for the most part until the last couple of days, when a couple went to 3.39.

I'm not sure what they are doing to test pricing, but the crazy part is I still see people fueling there when there are other options really close.

That is nuts. I am probably the exception but I use gas buddy all the time if there is another station close by that has similar but cheaper prices. I know it may only be $.10 here and there but when you drive a decent amount it can add up. I used to use Sam's all the time in Papillion, but I got so sick of the long lines and pumps being out which only makes it worse. Now I am all in on Bakers fuel program. You are able to up to 35 gallons at the reduced price which is huge (Hyvee program only allows 20 gallons)

I will throw this in - around land o lakes Florida - the nearest Costco is currently $3.35 and the price around the LOL area climbs into the $3.65 range. Damn glad I have a hybrid.

Glad I used my 70 cents off at Bakers the other day. $28 to fill up and paying 1.79 a gallon was nice. Looks like Costco is at $2.32 a gallon currently which still isn't bad.

Bought gas on the way back home yesterday (1/30/25) for 1.929 a gallon at Buckies right outside of Springfield MO
Everything else nearby was 15 - 25 cents higher.

Filled up this AM at Costco LaVista for 2.13
