Re: Retiming Signals
It’s really nice to have those walk signals give the walker the right away, before the car gets the green light. I work at UNMC and as a walking campus it makes things very smooth now.Coyote wrote: Tue Dec 27, 2022 1:22 pm 'Substantial saving': City of Omaha traffic engineers retime Dodge lights, lower drive time

72nd and Cornhusker Corridors Retime
72nd and Cornhusker Corridors Retime
A comprehensive retiming effort for critical traffic corridors in Papillion was recently completed. Working to reduce the travel time along 72nd street and Cornhusker Road. We drove the routes to see what difference the project has made.

Re: 72nd and Cornhusker Corridors Retime
That is awesome to see that video and what a small change can have.
My wife probably hates me, but I say this all the time when driving "can you imagine the amt of gas saved when intersections are timed right" Maybe not a ton to each person, but when you add it all up, it is a ton.
I have driven on these roads recently and thought it was nice to actually get across 370 when traveling south on 72nd....I had no idea they actually did all this, but now it makes sense (before you could almost never travel that distance without stopping every few blocks)

Re: Retiming Signals
Omaha considers removing traffic signals at seven intersections
7 more traffic signals will be removed for a 60 day test to see if they should be permanently removed.
Seems like the light on 43rd and Cuming blinks yellow most of the time already anyway.

The City of Omaha will turn-off stoplights at seven intersections as it weighs whether they can be permanently removed.
They are:
- 16th & William (Four-way stop to be installed)
- 16th & Davenport
- 20th & Pierce
- 33rd & Davenport (Four-way stop to be installed)
- 43rd & Cuming
- 38th & California (Four-way stop to be installed)
- 144th & U Street
All of these make sense to me except maybe 144th and U seems a bit out of place. I don't drive out that way much so I don't know how much traffic pulls out of U onto 144th.The move by the city is one more step in a long-term master plan to modernize Omaha's traffic signal system to improve efficiency and safety and the review is part of a federal requirement.
Since 2017, the city has removed 29 traffic signals throughout Omaha.

Re: Retiming Signals
There are already multiple ways to get out of the neighborhood/Millard South to the West and the businesses to the East of 144th. You've basically got 3 other traffic lights on 144th already with a half a mile of that one. It seems like a good candidate for elimination to me.JDJase wrote: Mon Oct 23, 2023 6:21 pm All of these make sense to me except maybe 144th and U seems a bit out of place. Re: Retiming Signals
7 Omaha traffic signals to be studied for possible removal
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Omaha Public Works is again evaluating some city traffic signals for possible removal.
It’s the sixth phase of a 10-12 year plan to modernize the city’s traffic signals that’s getting underway this week; the last phase happened more than a year ago. The plan involves reviewing all traffic signals to see if they comply with federal standards outlined in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. The requirements involve several factors, including vehicle and pedestrian volumes, wait time, gaps in traffic and crashes. After being evaluated, a traffic signal will either be upgraded with real-time monitoring or potentially be removed if it’s found the signal isn’t needed or doesn’t meet federal standards anymore.
The traffic signals being studied are in the following seven locations, shown in orange on the map below:
- 16th and William streets
- 33rd and Davenport streets
- 38th and California streets
- 144th and U streets
- 20th and Pierce streets
- 43rd Avenue and Cuming Street
- 16th and Davenport streets

Re: Retiming Signals
Ironically since you said they're considering these intersections, 50th & Underwood is already converted. I'd assume it happened stat on this past Friday. I'm okay with that. At least you can take a left now, and/or don't have to sit on 50th behind someone turning left.

Re: Retiming Signals
Right now they just have the lights bagged with stop signs up. After evaluating now through Oct 22nd they could un-bag the lights and restore the old flow if they think it did not go well.

Re: Retiming Signals
I wonder how often lights get spared the axe once they go on the chopping block like this. I know Irvington and Ida got turned back on
