CHEAP EATS: Sand Point
A mother and son, who already run two popular food trucks, have started a new venture - an upscale, casual restaurant. Modern Waffle and Three Kids Lobster have been a success here in the Metro. But the owners say their dream was to always have a brick-and-mortar. As 3 News Now Anchor Serese Cole reports, the owners say their new place allows them to share more of the New England cuisine they love so much with Omaha.
Sand Point just had its Grand Opening on Oct. 20. It is open Tuesday - Saturday at 11:00 a.m. The restaurant is located in the old Jack and Mary's building in Miracle Hills — 655 North 114th Street.

Had reservation for Sand Point over the weekend. We were seated pretty quickly and the place looks great. Lobster roll was outstanding. Crab Cakes were a 6.5 out of 10. Soups were also good and the service was quick and helpful.

Is that a 6.5 out of 10 a general scale or a seafood in Nebraska scale lol.Stan wrote: Tue Nov 14, 2023 7:57 pm Had reservation for Sand Point over the weekend. General scale when the best I've had was a small place in Lusby Maryland. It'd probably be an 8.5 out of 10 for Nebraska. You can really taste the crab, but it's got a little more filler than a crab cake needs.Louie wrote: Tue Nov 14, 2023 8:01 pmIs that a 6.5 out of 10 a general scale or a seafood in Nebraska scale lol.Stan wrote: Tue Nov 14, 2023 7:57 pm Had reservation for Sand Point over the weekend. It’s tough to find great crab cakes in Omaha. It’s tough not to find them on the East Coast.

Re: Sand Point (655 N. 114 St)
Shellfish were considered “poor people’s food” until the 1960’s or so; they used to feed lobster to prisoners on the East coast. Shrimp was so cheap, restaurants would give them away as a free starter. After moving to Virginia, I learned that crab cakes were a staple during the Depression, and to stretch out your dollar, they usually had a lot of filler. These were the crab cakes I had in restaurants on the shore. Frankly, I wasn’t crazy about them. It wasn’t until the 1980’s that restaurants were making them with mostly crab, mostly driven by tourist’s demands. Sand Point’s cakes are closer to what you’d get in a fishing village’s restaurant catering to the locals.Stan wrote: Tue Nov 14, 2023 8:10 pmGeneral scale when the best I've had was a small place in Lusby Maryland. Re: Sand Point (655 N. 114 St)
Went to Sand Point tonight. Had a great time. Started with a few appetizers, Lobster Arancini was my favorite. For dinner I had a Maine Lobster Roll, they also have a Connecticut Lobster Roll which I was not familiar with, but also sounded good. Also had a Lobster Mac n Cheese which was also good. Several good beers on tap. I’ll be back to try the other lobster roll soon.

Re: Sand Point (655 N. 114 St)
We dined there last weekend. The place was packed and we fortunately had reservations.
Our general impressions were positive. The staff was friendly. The owner stopped by to chat a bit. The clam chowder was absolutely delicious. I don’t want to think about the nutrition profile.
My salmon and risotto were both cooked perfectly. My husband opted for a burger and gave it thumbs up. On the down side, the potato side he got, which resembled home fries, was pretty much inedible. Maybe he just got a really undercooked batch. Upon request the waitress exchanged them for French fries, which were good. Portion size is more than ample, so neither of us had room for dessert.
The atmosphere is nice but unpretentious. The owners for whatever reason opted to have a similar color theme as Denny’s, with lots of orange upholstered furniture. Not what I would have gone with. Interior noise levels were moderate, given that every table was filled.
On the evening of our visit the patrons definitely skewed to the Over-50 demographic. Not as old as the former Jack and Mary’s but definitely not a Millennial crowd. Thank goodness. Prices are about what you would expect.

That's the furniture from Julio's, which was in that location for about 5.7 seconds. I didn't mind it, but I like orange.nativeomahan wrote: Fri Feb 02, 2024 6:56 pm The owners for whatever reason opted to have a similar color theme as Denny’s, with lots of orange upholstered furniture. Re: Sand Point (655 N. 114 St)
I have a problem dining in restaurants that cater to people who like to eat in noisy restaurants with lots of visual stimulation (a/k/a Televisions). I prefer to have a conversation with my table mates without having to raise my voice over the cacophony of people having to shout to be heard over concrete and metal surfaces and loud music. And if I wanted to watch TV I would stay at home.Louie wrote: Fri Feb 02, 2024 7:17 pm

Mercifully, while Sand Point has several large TV screens throughout the restaurant they are silent, and half just show pictures of their menu items. Odd but less distracting.

Sand Point takes a tough order – seafood in Nebraska – and mostly pulls it off
Flatwater Free Press wrote: When you live in the most landlocked state in the country, one of the rarest restaurants you see is the one focused on the upper northeast, where seafood – not beef – is king. Sand Point, which opened near 114th and Dodge in fall 2023, has taken a dive straight into the icy Atlantic and is swimming like crazy, serving a Maine-inspired menu of mussels, lobster rolls, clams, crab and fresh fish. Its owner confirmed what I suspected – it can often feel like swimming against the current. It’s challenging to reel seafood into Omaha. It’s more challenging still to get fresh enough seafood to meet a lofty standard of quality.
