Omaha Public Schools ready to begin fielding superintendent applications

Omaha Public Schools, the largest school district in the state, is one step further in the process of finding its next head role: superintendent. On Monday night, the board approved the proposed “Profile of a Superintendent” via a 7-2 vote. It comes after months of surveys, forums, and meetings. The board engaged in a healthy discussion on the topic during Monday’s meeting, where they discussed data that was gathered from parents, students, teachers, and other community members.

Students frustrated after Omaha Public Schools axe college access program

For 20 years, the University of Nebraska-Omaha and the Omaha Public School District have teamed up to provide an alternative school setting where students can finish high school and transition into college. Students taking part in the program are now trying to get answers as to why it’s being discontinued. Those students let the Omaha Public Schools Board of Education know what they think during Monday’s meeting. With tears... “For you, I may just be another student kicking the dead horse,” said Marcus, one of the program’s participants. “You’re preaching for a program that you believe is better up close and discarded for reasons I don’t know myself, nor do any of the affected students.”

Omaha Public Schools reveal plans for new athletic facility

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - An empty lot of grass sits right next to Nathan Hale Middle School. There are a couple of soccer goals, but nothing really new. “It is an unbelievable large piece of land and it’s on major bus routes,” Tim Bennett with the East Omaha Athletic Association said. “This is an unbelievable access point for the community.” Two years ago, OPS and the East Omaha Athletic Association started looking at areas in the district they felt needed more access to youth sports facilities. “This was kind of how we ended up at Nathan Hale,” Bennett said. “What we wanted to do was provide a facility to OPS that they can use for their middle school and high school sports.”

What is the story behind the LED wall at the OPS School Board meetings? It’s hard to take budgetary discussions seriously with that monstrosity behind them. It also looks terrible on camera, making any footage of meetings hard to watch. Where can we find the cost of this wall and the proposal that led(no pun intended) up to it?

I was thinking the same thing, Both the cost and how bad it looks on TV.
